- a shaker that is a vessel in which various liquids are to be mixed together and perhaps chilled with cracked ice, is usually made of very thin metal and henceis liable to be bent more or less out of shape in transportation so that its cover will not t tightly and during the shaking process the liquid will leak out.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. CHICK, of Boston, in the county-of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and use-- ful Improvement in Shakers, of which the following is a specification.V
A shaker, that is a vessel in which various liquids are to be mixed together and perhaps chilled with cracked ice, is usually made of very thin metal and henceis liable to be bent more or less out of shape in transportation so that its cover will not t tightly and during the shaking process the liquid will leak out. Drinking cups have also been made of thin metal, but in rings so that they may be collapsed and packed in small compass.v Shakers have not hitherto been made in collapsible form for the reason presumably that during the handling to which they are submitted while in use there is danger that they will accidentally collapse and spill the liquid.
My invention vis intended primarily to provide a vessel of kthis general character with means to prevent its being collapsed while in use, which means will also serve to lock the vessel when in collapsedform so that it will not open out during transport-a4 tion. It will be understood by reference to the drawings in which it is shown appliedv to a shaker and in its preferred form.
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the vessel in its open er usable form;
Fig. 2 being a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

The vessel as shown comprises three sections 1, 2, 3, and a cover. l y shown comprises a ring 5 and above it a conical portion 6 which terminates in a neck 7 closed by a removable cap 8. The diameter of the neck 7 is somewhat smaller than the ring 5 so as to provide an easy means of emptying the vessel. -The cap 8 has preferably lin its centre a pin 9. The section 1 is closed at the bottom and each section 1, 2 and 3 is slightly smaller than the one next above it, all of them being conical in character and of thin metal, and sections k2 and 3 being open at both ends, So that the lower Vration 1 The cover as edgeof section 2 encloses and makes a ti ht slidingI fit `withthe top of section 1; so a so with sections 2 and 3, this construction being well known inthe collapsible cup art.

So slight that it cannotv be indicated in the drawings but suiicient tospring the braces as a whole past their dead centre toward the axis ofthe shaker andfsc lock'themselves l in position to give a iirm support to the shaker as a whole, the longer parts 11 springing slightly for this purpose.
It will thus be seen-that owing tothe flange 10 the shaker has abroad foundation f on which' it may restl on a table for example, i
and owing to the'bra'ces its parts arehe'ld firmly in extended position so that the'vessel cannot collapse. The cover 5 which sets int the top of section 3 and its cap 8 may 'be heldin the hands of the user and the shaker used'in the ordinary waywithout danger of collapsing. A strainer 18 is preferably placed on top of the cover but below-its neck to prevent the ice, etc. from beingpourned out after the shaking operation has taken place.
When it is desired to close this shaker Vfor I packing, thepart 12 of the brace is unlocked from the perforations 16 inV lugs 15 and the vessel yis then collapsed -inte the position `Shown in Fig. 5. Eachpart 12 has a perforation 2O in it sufficiently large to fit over the pin 9, and the length'of the section 11 or' each brace is sufficient to bring its hinge 13 lio substantially on a level with the top of the 1 capv 8 when the vessel is collapsed. Thus the parts l2y of the brace may be folded over horizontally as shown in Fig. 5 and the per'forations 20 slipped over the pin 9 sol with the ypart l1 of `the braces.
It is'beli'e'ved'v that the advantage of this construction will be evident as it results in a deyice iconvenient, for' packing andprotected not fonly bythe'cover and the flange l() at thetwo ends but-"also bythe parts 11 whicliise'rve -to some extent to` keep other articl'ezs'gfromr touching it ina closely packed lunchlbasket 'for example.

What l claim as my invention is l. A vessel of the kind described comprising a series of sections of graduated size and a plurality of braces, one end of each brace being connected to a section at the end of the vessel and adapted to engage with a section at the other end ot the vessel, whereby said sections will be held in extended relation and upon the disengagement of said braces may be collapsed, said braces being made in two parts permanently hinged together, in
combination with a cover and means whereby when said vessel is in collapsed position and prevent it from moving toward the first 8 end section and when said sections are collapsed to fold over one of the end sections.'

A vessel of the kind described comprising sections of graduated sizeadapted when' extended to form. a liquid-containing vessel and means to hold said sections in extended relation, said means comprising braces located to engage two end sections, said braces being slightly'longer than the'distance' be-` tween the points at which they engage the two end sections when said sections are extended, whereby they will be sprung'into bracing position, in combination with stops located to limit the inwardy movement ot each. brace when in bracing position.
A collapsible vessel having a cover, hinged braces adapted to hold said vessel in extended position and when said vessel is in collapsed position to be folded to meet over the cover of said vessel and hold it in said collapsed position.
