EMELINE S. BURNS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COLLAPSIBLE nnnvxrlve-our.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 2,1911.
; Patented Dec. 5, 1911. Serial No. 652,458;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMELINE S. BURNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the .art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a section taken through the center of the container or box in which my improved collapsible drinking cup is positioned and carried while in a collapsed condition. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a col-- lapsible drinking cup of myimproved con struction. Fig. 3 is anelevation of my improved drinking cup and showing the lower end of the folding handle detached from its support. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the box or container for the collapsible cup.
This invention relates to a collapsible drinking cup and the box or container therefor, and the objects of my invention are to provide a collapsible drinking cup with a folding handle, which, when the cup is open for use'is connected to a portion of the base of the cup so as to hold and prevent the cup from collapsing while in use, to provide a water and dustproof box or container for the collapsible cup and to provide the box or container with a ring wherebyit may be readily-engaged and carried While the cup is in service.
To the above purposes my invention con- 'sists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates a base plate in the form of a disk of thin, light-weight material preferably metal such as aluminum, and rigidly fixed to said base is the lower section 6 of the body of the'cup. This section is in the form of a ring of thin material such as aluminum, and said ring gradually tapers toward its lower end.
7, 8 and 9 designate intermediate ring sections which form the main body portion of the cup, and each of thesesections tapers slightly toward-its lower end.
10 designates the ring section forming the body of the cup, the same tapering slightly lower end and provided with a l2 designates an ear the lower end of I l which is pivot-ally connected to the upper ring section 10 by means of a rivet 13, and hinged to the upper end of the ear 12 is the upper end of a curved handle 11 the lower end of which is provided with an outwardly projecting pin or stud 15. Fixed to the base 5 and pro ectingupwardly therefrom is a bracket 16 in the upper portion of which is formed an aperture 17 adapted to receive the pin or stud 15.
The box or container for my improved collapsrble cup comprises a round body portion 18 preferably constructed of thin sheet metal, and adapted to fit the'reonto is a cover 19, the same being connected to; the part 18 by a hinge 20. Formed in the part 18 adjacent the edge thereof is a circular'recess 21, and hinged to the edge of the part 18 and adapted to occupy this recess 21 is a'ring 22 by means of which the box or receptacle is engaged and held while the collapsible .cup is removed therefrom and in service.
The cover 19 fits snugly on the part 18 in order to form a water and dust proof container for the collapsible cup.' When the cup is collapsed and positioned in the com tainer the handle 14 is swungupward and folded over into the collapsed, or telescoped sections 6- to 10 inclusive, dotted lines in Fig. 1, and when the cup is open for use the handle is shifted slightly to one side, I mit the pin or stud 15 carried by the lower end of said handle to be engaged in the aperture 17, thus locking the cup in its open or expanded position. Thus, when the cup is in service it is impossible for it to accidentally collapse thereby spilling its contents.
A collapsed cup of my improved construction is very simple, can be cheaply produced and is locked in open position by'means of the handle, and when said cup is not in service it occupies a position within the dust and water proof receptacle and is therefore kept in a clean-and sanitary condition. I
It will be readily understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of thevarious parts of my improved cup can as shown by the as shown in F ig.-3 in order to per- I is open.
readily be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
1. In a device of the class described a base, a series of telescoping sections, the lower 'one of which is fixed to the base, a member pivotailymounted on the upper one of the telescoping sections, a handle hinged at its upper end to said pivotally mounted member and means on the base for engaging the lower end of the handle when the cup 2. In a a series of telescoping sections, the lower one device of the class described a base,
of which is fixed to said base, an ear pix otally mounted onthe upper one of the telescoplng sections, a handle hinged to said ear, a late fixed to and projecting upwardly EMELINE S. BURNS.
