struction and is contained within a cylinder casing which can be placed within holes bored by a common auger in the edge and sides of the door thus almost totally eliminating the mortising of the door that is required for the ordinary door latch. @ne of the main features of my device is that it .is so constructed that it can be operated by merely bearing` against the door knob on one side or pulling the door knob upon the opposite side, but at `the same time holding the door in its latched position and preventing the same from being opened by any pressure against the door itself. lt is also my desire to provide auxiliary means for causing the latch to act as. a positive lock.
I attain the above described and incidental features in the device hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A tubular casing a, having at one end a face plate is closed at the other end by screw cap c. The face plate b has a square opening d, thru which projects the latch e,

`The latch e (see Fig. 8) consists of a solid portion j, from which project a pair of flanges g. rFhe side of one of the iianges, together with the corresponding side of the portion f, forms a parallelogram and the flange constitutes more than onehalf of the length of the long axis of the parallelogram thus formed.
Holes 7L are bored thru the flanges at the intersection of the long and short axis as shown in F ig. 8. The free ends of the member 'i and m are slidably mounted within ak square tubev g which 1s of a shorter length `(see Figs. 4 and 5) and extends only part way over the same, thus excluding the latch c. A y

The members c', g anda are then all fastened together by the lug r being in the hole s and there can be.no relative motion -between them, 'but/when the lug `i" is raised from the hole s the members and m can move relatively With the member Q and the latch c can assume "the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4, and thus pressure on the door Will cause the latch to be released. The circular pin n holds the members g and z' together. n
This combination is then inserted into a cylindrical tube u and when in place the tube a is secured firmly in this position by spot welding as at the corners f, and thus the members g and nare l'irmly locked together. y
The latch mechanism as thus shown is then slidably mounted Within the casing (t thru the opening in the end of the same, and is placed in the position as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, with the latch c protruding thru the opening` d in the face-plate o.
A coil spring o is mounted on the pin fw Which in turn is secured to the lug mounted on the surface of the bearing member m. This spring bears against the inner side of the cap c and tends to hold the latch mechanism in its forward position as shown in Fig. 4. The assembled latch mechanism is then inserted into the hole jz/ bored in the end of the door and the section b is then mortised out of the face plate Z).
Vrlhe latch mechanism operates as in a standard latch and thnsv can be forced inwardly either by bearing against the end of the latch or against the inclined face e of the latch ej The flat face e of the latch c bears against the side 2 of the square hole 3 cut in the latch stopr2.l (See 2a.)
As stated before it is my intention to provide means for operating the latch by merely pulling or bearing against the door knob and to accomplish' this result l rigidly attach to the square slide bar 4, on the ends of which `are mounted the knobs 4, the member 5 having a perpendicular projecting arm 6. This slide bar 4y is set within the hole bored in the side of the door e directly over the opening a of the casing a. The holes 8 and 9 are then bored directly underneath but with the center ofl each hole closer together than the diameter ofeach. The portion as indicated by 1() is cut away thus providing for the vertical. face 11.
The latch stop 2 is inserted into the section 12 mortised out in the door ca sing 13.
As will be seen in Fig. 7 ythe arm 6 sets directly before and almost bears against the stud 14 mounted on the end of the member m. (See Fig. 10.) Vhen 4the slide bar 4 is pressed back `into the casing the bar member m vassumes the position shown by the dot and dash line m.
Thev lug r isthus lifted out of the opening s and the latch e together with the latch mechanism is then vfree to be moved forward as shown by dot and dash lines in Fig. 4, and the latch e assumes the position as shown. The face e thus becomes an inclined plane and the edge 2 bearing against the same forced the latch inward.
ldlhen the door is again closed the side 3 of the opening 3 bears against the face e and forces the latch to assume its original position and the lng i' again sets Within the hole s.
The door can thus be opened byr pushing or pulling the knobs but resists any pressure against the door itself.`
As stated before, onel of the main objects of my invention is to provide for simplicity, compactness in construction and the small number of parts'used; and also a device with parts so shaped. that it is only necessary to drill holes in the door together with a very small amount of mortising. f
To obtain this object l provide mea-ns for having the latch function also as a positive lock to be operated by a key, that the door cannot be opened by means of the knobs and accomplish the same bythe following` means.
The circular member 15 (see Figs 11, 12, 13 and 14) has a projecting portion 16 in which is cnt a dove-tailed groove 17. The bar 18 on Which are mounted the lugs 19 and 20 inclined as shown, sets Within the groove 17 and is free to slide Within the same. To limit the movement of the same, l provide a pin 21 set in a hole22 in the bar 18 and sliding in a groove 23 cut in the back of the portion 16 of member 15. The member 15 is then inserted into the casing. 24 closed at one end as 25 and with slots 26 provided for bar 18. An opening 27 is provided for the key 28.
The casing 24 is set Within the hole 11 in the door 2 in the position relative Vto the latch casing a as shown in Fig. 3.v The end of the bar m` sets only part Way beyond the opening a thus providing for a space behind the saine as 30 and in whichv slides the member 18.
The projecting lug 28 ofthe key 28 raises the member 18 by bearing against the underside of the stud` 19 when the key is turned and the member then sets between the end of the bar m and the side of the opening o in the casing a and prevents the movement of the latch mechanism,l thus locking the same as seen in F ig. 3.
The lug 28 bears against the lug` 2O when the key 28 is turned in the opposite direction and thus unlocks the latch mechanism..
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a tubular casing7 a member supported in the'casing and longitudinally slidable therein, a triangular latchpiece pivoted at one of its vertices to one,
end of said member, a spring actuated bar pivoted to said latch, and adapted to hold the latter in one position, means locking said bar against longitudinal movement, thereby preventing the movement of the ioo latch on its pivot, such locking means being adapted to release the bar by lateral pressure against the latter.
2. In a device of the character described the combination of a tubular casing, a member supported in the casing and longitudinally slidable therein, a triangular latchpiece pivoted at one of itsvertices to one end of said member, a spring actuated bar pivoted to said latch, and adapted to hold the latter in one position, spring controlled mean locking said bar against longitudinal movement, thereby preventing the movement of the latch on its pivot, such locking means being adapted to release the bar by lateral pressure against the latter.
. 3. In a device of the character described the combination of a tubular casing, a member supported in lthe casing and longitudi-r nally slidable therein, a triangular latchpiece pivoted at one of its vertices to one end of said member, a spring actuated bar pivoted to said latch, and adapted to hold the latter in one position7 means locking said bar against longitudinal movement, thereby preventing the movement of the latch on `its pivot, and a door knob shank provided with a piece adapted to bear against, and thereby laterally move said bar.
4. In a device or' the character described, the combination of a tubular casing, a member supported in the casing and longitudinally slidable therein, a triangular latchpiece pivoted at one of lits vertices to one end of said member, a spring actuated bar pvoted to said latch and adapted to hold `the latter in one position, spring controlled means locking said bar against longitudinal movement, thereby preventing the movement of the latch on its pivot, and a door knob shank provided with a piece adapted to bear against, and thereby laterally move said bar.
