Be it known that 1. JOHN VEIGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City. in the county of Jackson and State of h'lissouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scrapers, of which the fol.- lowing is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a floor surfacing apparatus.
My primary object is to produce a ma chine of this character by means of which a floor may be quickly scraped and sand papered.
A. further object is to produce a machine by means of which the labor and expense of scraping and dressing floor surfaces will be greatly reduced. and to simplify the construction of such machines now generally in use for this class of work and whereby a smooth even surface may be produced on floor surfaces.
A further object is to produce a machine of this character which permits the operator to work in upright or standing position.
A still further object is to produce a machine of this character which will not inflict injury to the floor surface or injury to the walls or the base board of a wall by contact therewith.
The foregoing, and other ob ects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form'part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a floor surfacing machine in accordance with this invention.

The body 1 of my inprovement is preferably in the nature of a sol d. metal castingq 1922. Serial No. 567,349.
The body has its upper portion round in side elevation. its front concaved inwardly from its said rounded upper portion and extended to provide a substantially flat ledge 52. The body has its rear face also rounded inwardly, the said rounded portion terminating in an outwardly disposed angularly arranged flat surface which provides what I will term a lip 3. The lip is projected a suitable distance below the substantially flat under face 4 of the body 1. Also the lip'is of a greater width than the body.
To the rear of the lip 3 the body is pro vided with outwardly extending short shafts or trunnions 5 on which are ournaled wheels 6. Each wheel has its rim concaved circum ferentially for the reception of a cushioned tread 7. It. is to be noted that the body,
proper is disposed at an outward inclination with respect to the trunnions and to the wheels mounted thereon, and that the weight of the said body will therefore be imposed directly over the lip 3 thereof, with the result that the said lip is thus directed toward the floor surface on which the device is arranged. The outer face of the weighted body has preferably removably secured thereon a cushioning element 8 which is pro jected a considerable distance beyond the lip and. which will contact with the wall surface when the device is brought thereagainst and prevent the machine from inflicting in jury to the wall.
The under face 4- of the body is reduced at a suitable distance inward of the trunnions 5. the reduced portion extending to the end of the lip The shoulders provided byt-he stepped under face of the body have spaced depending ears 9 respectively. the said ears having openings for the reception of a shaft 10 suitable means being provided for holding the shaft against longitudinal movement. .lournaled on the shaft 10 there is a sleeve 11. The sleeve has a bifurcated extension 12, directed toward the end of the lip 3. Between the arms provided by this extension there is received the fiat end 18 of a socket member 14. The end 13 of the socket is provided with spaced apertures 15, and passing through aligning openings in the arms of the extension 12 of the sleeve 11 and through one of the said apertures 15 there is a pin 16. The handle 17 by which the device is manually operated is received in and secured to the socket 14C.
The lip 3 elongated t ansv rse iii) opening adjacent to the outer end thereof, which is indicated by the numeral 18. The handle 15 is received in an eye memberu19. The eye has a bolt extension 20 which passes through the opening 15. Screwed on the bolt there are nuts 21 and 22 respectively. The nut 21 contacts with the under face of the lip and the nut 22 with the outer face thereof. By adiusting the nuts, the bolt may be moved vertically with respect to the lip, with the result that the handle is likewise adjusted with respect to the body. In addition to this, the handle may be arranged and sustained at varying desired angles with respect to the body, by arranging the pin in desired. aperture in the flat end 13 of the socket 1.4, and likewise by arranging the bolt 20 adjacent to either end of the opening 18. The outer fiat face of the lip 3 is provided with spacing openings 23. On the outer face of the lip there is a plate 24L provided with openings 25 I that align with the openings 23. Through these aligning openings there are passed bolts 26 which are engaged by nuts 27 If desired, the openings in the lips may be threaded to engage the bolts. The plate 24:
. is centrally provided with an adjusting bolt 28. Between the plate 24 and the bolt there is a scraper blade 29. The bolt is provided with slots that receive therethrough the bolts that connects the plate 24 to the lip. The adjusting bolt contacts with the scraper blade to assist the connecting nuts and bolts in sustaining the said blade in proper posi tion on the machine. The scraper blade is weight influenced to floor contacting position, so that when the machine is moved over the floor surface, the same will be scraped. The depth in which the blade enters the floor surface is regulated by regulating the handle with respect to the height of the operator, and by sustaining the handle angularly with respect to the machine the device may be properly propelled around corners of the room.
I The blade 29 will not give the floor surface fine a finish as may be desired, and therefore, I have found it necessary to employ a surfacing element after the floor has been scraped. This element may be and preferably is in the nature of an ordinary sheet of sand paper. The sand paper is indicated by the numeral 30, and has its ends tacked to the rounded ends 311. of a block The block has its sides provided with outwardly extending short shafts or trunnions 32. As a matter of fact, a single shaft may be employed, if desired, suitable means, such as sleeves being arranged thereon for holding the same against lateral movement through the body. The shafts 32 have on their ends the angle arms of a substantially U-shaped member or bail 83. The bail is clamped between the lip and the plate 24: in the same manner that the scraper blade 28 is clamped between these elements.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the construction, operation and advantages of the improvement to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate and that further detailed description will not be required. It is believed necessary to state, however, that the improvement is not to be restricted to size, proportion, material e1npl'oyed,'or other details of construction herein set forth, as I am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of what I claim,
Having described the invention, I claim In a floor surfacing machine, a weighted body having an inwardly arranged outwardly inclined lip at the outer and lower corner thereof which is disposed inwardly with respect to the outer face of the body and which is extended laterally beyond the sides of the body, wheels journaled on the body to the rear of the projecting ends of the lip, means for removably and adjustably securing a floor surfacing element to the body, a sleeve journaled in bearings on the under face of the body having a bifurcated extension, a socket having a flat extension provided with spaced apertures received in the bifurcated extension of the sleeve, a pin passing through the arms of the bifurcated extension of the sleeve and one of the apertures of the socket extension, an operating handle on the socket, an eye member thereon having a bolt extension. said body having its inner end formed with a straight lip provided with an elongated slot through which the bolt passes, and nuts on the bolts in contact with the upper and lower faces of the lip, as and for the purpose set forth.
