Description

A. KENDECHY WALLPAPER REMOVER Filed Nov. 25, 1938 April 15, 1941.
ill!!! 9 will I flmirew/rzied Patented Apr. 15, 1941 ii i WALLPAPER REMUVER Andrew Kendechy, Cleveland, Ohio Application November 23, 1938, Serial No. 242,162
2 Claims.
My invention relates to wallpaper removers and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of a portable device for distributing water over the surface of wallpaper so as to cause the water to penetrate the paper and loosen the paste holding the paper to the surface to which it is applied whereby it may be easily and quickly removed with a knife in the usual manner.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described equipped with means for washing the wall after the removal of the paper therefrom and in a manner to preclude leaking of water from the device onto the floor.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my invention partly in section.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of the guard attachment.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional View taken on the plane of the line lkl of Figure 3 and illustrating the guard attachment secured to the casing.
In practicing my invention, I provide a casing ii open at its rear side 6 and fashioned at its upper and lower ends I and 3 respectively with water containers. Mounted in the casing, between said containers, is a block of sponge rubber ll having the rear face thereof normally extending slightly beyond the rear face of the container. interposed between the front wall of the casing and said block 9 is a press plate I swivelly connected to the inner end of an adjusting screw H extending through said front wall of the casing whereby to effect adjustment of the block 9 with the casing to compensate for wear.
The inwardly disposed walls of the containers are fashioned with a plurality of openings l2 whereby heated water or the like will flow onto the block of sponge rubber 9, it being understood that the water flows only from the container at the upper end of the casing and when this container is empty the device is reversed to arrange the other container in a position to deliver water to the block of sponge rubber. The front wall of the casing has secured. thereto a handle 14 whereby the device may be readily operated over an area of paper to be removed from the wall.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that when the device is operated over an area of wallpaper and the press plate adjusted to effect engagement of the block with said paper, the latter will become saturated and thus loosen the paste holding said paper to the wall surface whereby it may be easily and quickly removed therefrom with a knife in the usual manner.
The outer corners of the containers 1 and 8 are fashioned with inwardly extending threaded cul-de-sacs for the reception of screws [5 extending through flanges ll of a frame constituting a part of a guard attachment extending about the casing. The frame has secured thereto a rectangular shaped rubber guard It, the rear face of which extends beyond the flanges l1 and effects engagement with a wall surface. After the paper has been removed from the wall, the guard attachment is secured to the casing and permits of the wall surface being washed by the block 9, the guard attachment serving to preclude water from said block from leaking downwardly over the wall and dripping onto the floor.
What I claim is:
l. A device of the character described, comprising a rectangular casing having a transverse container at its respective upper and lower ends and an open rear side between said containers, a press plate mounted in the space between the containers adjacent the front wall of the rectangular casing, an adjusting screw mounted in said front wall for adjusting the press plate, a block of sponge rubber compressed in the space between the containers and extending slightly beyond the face of the casing and the inner walls of the containers having openings for supplying a liquid to the block of sponge rubber.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a rectangular casing having a transverse container at its respective upper and lower ends and an open rear side between said containers, a press plate mounted in the space between the containers adjacent the front wall of the rectangular casing, an adjusting screw mounted in said front wall for adjusting the press plate, a block of sponge rubber compressed in the space between the containers and extending slightly beyond the face of the casing, the inner walls of the containers having openings for supplying a liquid to the block of sponge rubber, and a removable flexible guard extending entirely around the rectangular casing and extending beyond the outer face of the block of sponge rubber.
