VWITNESSES ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 13, 1923.
UNITED STATES CHARLES LEWIS, OF LINDEN, NEW JERSEY.
ROTARY BRUSH.
Application filed June 22, 1922. Serial No. 570,169.
34 Curtiss Street, inden, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rotary brushes. More particularly, the invention relates to rotary brushes of a type having a bristle carrying stock or cylinder which is rotated by an electric motor.
Some of the objects of the present invention are: to employ connectible and detachable units one ofwhich embodies a bristle element, so that upon the detachment of the units, the bristle element may be cleaned easily, and at the same time giving access to other parts which might require repair and adjustment and lubrication; to produce a device of the character mentioned which may be operated conveniently, and which is comparatively practical. With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the particular provision, relative disposition and the operation of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the device of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 22, Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the views of the drawing it will be apparent that, generally, the device comprises a brushunit 10, a power-unit 11, and a handle-unit 12. w
The brush-unit 10 comprises a cylinder 13 having an end wall 14, bristles 15, and being open at one end. The end wall 14 haskey ways 16 therein for a purpose to appear.
The power-unit 11 comprises a handle 17, rod 18 fixedly attached to said handle, an electric motor 19 carried by rod 18, a switch 20 carried by said handle 17, and conductors 21 electrically connected to said electric motor 19 and to said switch 20. The conductors are connected to a standard plug 22 with which electrical connection may be effected to a socket having connection to feed conductors. The handle has a flange 23 which is substantially equal in diameter to the internal diameter of the cylinder 13.
The switch 20 maybe of any well known construction, and in the present instance, it consists of a pair of flexible contacts 24 and a bridge piece 25 which is movable into and out of engagement with the contacts 24; the bridge piece 25 having a push-button 26. The armature of the motor 19 has connected thereto for rotation therewith a shaft 27. The shaft 27 has keys 28 which are so positioned on said shaft as to be received by the key-ways 16 when the brush-unit 10 and the power-unit 11 are brought together.
The unit 12 is in the nature of a handle made up of parts 29 and 30. The part 29 has a central bore 31 therein to receive the free end of the shaft 27 and also has a reduced screw threaded portion 32, and the part 30 has a screw threaded bore therein which receives the portion 32. The bore in the part 30 is sufficiently large to accommodate a nut 33 screwed onto the screw threaded extremity 34 of the shaft 27.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that; the three units may be assembled by the interconnection of detachable parts so that the brush-unit 10 may be rotated by virtue of the operation of the motor 19, shaft 27, and key connection between the shaft 27 and the end wall 14; both handles may be held in the manipulation of the bristles over the hair of a person; the motor may be conveniently started andstopped; and the several units may be readily separated to be cleaned, or repaired, or oiled, as required and as the occasion demands.
What is claimed is:
A rotary brush comprising in combination, connectible and separable units, oneof said units embodying a cylinder having bristles thereon; a second unit comprising a handle, an electric motor supported by said handle, a rotatable shaft rotatedby said motor, and means for connecting said cylinder to said shaft; a third unit in the nature of a handle of detachable parts, one of said parts having a bore therein for the reception of an end of said shaft, a nut on the extreme end of said shaft for holding said cylinder against longitudinal movement and said part in place; and the other of said parts serving to cap said nut.
In testimony whereof I hereby afiix my signature.
CHARLES LEWIS.
