DOOR HOLDER.
Application filed November 24, 1926. Serial No. 150,564.
The present invention is directed to improvements in door holders.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an article of this character so constructed that it can be easily and quickly placed for holding a swinging door in varione open positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of this kind constructed in such matter that it can'be used in connection with doors,'whether their lower edges are close to the floor or spaced a considerable distance thereabove.
Another object of the invention is'to provide an article of this type whichvcomprises a pair of pivotally connect-ed substantially complementary door and floor engaging plates, novel means being provided to limit the swinging movement of the door-engaglIig plate with respect to the floor-engaging p ate.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an article of this kind wherein the plates are yieldably urged away from each other through the medium of a spring, novel means being provided for permanently connecting and retaining the spring in proper assembled relationship with the plates.

The holder consists of a pair of upper and lower complementary elongated sheet metal plates 1 and 2, the former being designed to rest upon the floor, while the latter engages under the lower edge of the door.
The plates have their side margins terminating in vertical flanges 3 and 4, respectively, the rear ends thereof being rounded, as at 5, to add to the appearance of the device.
It will be observed that the forward ends of the flanges 3 are beveled to constitute stops 6 operable in amanner to be herein after explained.
The flanges 3 and 4 are provided adjacent their forward ends with perforations 7 and 8, respectively, in order that the pivot bolt or pin 9 may be engaged therein to pivotally connect the plates in assembled relationship.
The plate 2 is slightly wider than its companion plate 1 in order that the flanges 4 thereof will slidably engage the outer surfaces of the flanges 3 when the plate 1 is depressed. V
In order to resiliently urge the door engaging plate 1 away from the plate 2 a spring 10 is provided and is formed from a single length of'resilient sheet metal bent intermediate its ends to provide leaves 11 and 12. The sheet forming the spring is bent in any approved manner, it being essential, however, that the bending operation be such that a sleeve 13 is provided,and it is in this sleeve that the pin or bolt 9 is passed, in order to hold the spring properly positioned between the plates with the leaves 11 and 12 thereof engaged, respectively, with the inner surfaces of the plates 1 and 2, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. It will be apparent that the pin 9 not only serves to pivotally connect the plates'l and 2, but also serves to hold the spring 10 in place.
The under surface of the plate 2 has secured thereto in any suitable manner rubber pads, 14 designed to prevent marring of the floor and, at the same time, frictionally grip the floor to prevent slipping of the holder when in use.
The upper plate 1 is provided with a multiplicity of gripping lugs 15 serving to engage the lower edge of the door to more effectively retain the same in its open position.
' In use, the holder-is placed upon the floor and the upper plate forced downwardly by placing the foot upon the free end thereof, whereupon the door is swung with thelower edge thereof over the plate 1. Upon removing the foot from the plate 1 the spring, previously contracted, expands and yieldably urges the plate 1 into engagement with the door edge, thus firmly holding the door in an open position. When the holder, is not in use the upward swinging movement of the plate 1 is limited by the shoulder 6 contacting with the plate 1, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A door holder comprising a pair of pivotally connected plates, said plates having side marginal flanges, the ends of the flanges of one of the plates being beveled to provide stops for engaging the companion plate to limit the swinging movement thereof in one direction.
2. A door holder comprising a pair of plates having their forward ends pivotally connected, a spring comprising a pair of leaves disposed in converging relationship, the adjacent ends of said leaves being connected by a sleeve, the pivotal connection between the plates being engaged in said sleeve.
