Description

Feb. 6, W23. A -3 B. LEVY v HATBOX FILED JAN. 12. I921 2 SHEETS'SHEIET I um/whoa l atentedl eh. 65, T9523.
nnn'rna nnvr, or new roan, n.
narnozr.
Application filed January 12, 1 21.
Te all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, Bnn'rrra Lnvr, a citizen or the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful improvementin llatboxes, of which the following is a specification.
'l his invention relates to a hat box particularly adapted for containing ladies hats, and an objectof this invention is to provide an article of this character which will be arranged in a particularly compact form and adapted to properly carry a hat under the most severe conditions without damage to the hat or other contents.
A further object of this invention is to provide a hat box or container which will in addition to carrying a hat be provided with means for carrying toilet articles or any. other articles desired in a compact and secure manner.
A further object of this invention is to provide a. hat box provided with a hat containing compartment of regulatable area so that ladies hats with a large amount of trimming can be accommodated as readily assmaller sized hats.
With these objects and other objects which may hereinafter appear, in view, I have devised the particular arrangement and combination or" parts hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the claims; appended hereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, in which' Figure l is a perspective view of a hat box made in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of my improved hat box, with the cover in closed position,
Figure 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the hat box and foldable tray, showing the manner in which the tray is secured in position;
Figure 4: is a sectional view on the line 11-4 01 Figure 1. looking in the direction of the arrows;
Figure 5 is a sectional view of a portion of the hat box cover, showing the manner in which the detachable pocket member is secured in position, and
Figure 6 is a plan view of the under side of the tray.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line Serial No. 436,671.
5'? of Figure 6, looking in the direction of the arrows.
"lhroughout the various views of the draw- '1, similar reference characters designate ilar parts. 1 the preferred embodiment of my inven'on, as disclosed in the accompanying drawing, l inuitates the hat box, which I have shown square, but which may be or any silt-able shape and size to suit different reo'u ii'ients.
i e be): is provided with sides 2, a bot- ;l and cover at, the cover being pivoted to tin box as by the hinges 5. it look 6 and a handle 7 are provided, the handle secured to one of the sides 2 of the box being to enable the box: to be very conveniently carried. The handl 7 is preferably provided the side of the box opposite to the hinges, and at the same side as the lock.
The box is provided with a hatreceiving ccniparnnent S, and detachably secured therein, I y snap-fasteners 9, is the hat :i'form 10 which is adapted to receive the hat. he box is made of suficicnt capacity the walls of the box may be provided .ltll similar hat iornis whereby a number of hats can be carriel in the hat-containing space. l1"- however, the hat carrying capacity small, the space wit iin the hat compart' went not utilized by the hat, may be used for containing other articles of wearing apzl. In Figure 2, I have shown a pair of loops 11 secured to the side walls 2 of the box, said loops being adapted to receive and hold a pair of shoes or slippers. it will be obvious that various arrangements of the hat-rece ing compartment may be made without (,lQPtllllllIg from the spirit of my invention.
E:-:tendin;.: about the interior of the box and secured to the side walls adjacent the top thereof is a narrow strip 12 which forms a supporting ledge for a :toldable or collapsible tray 13.
The tray 1?, which is disclosed in detail in Figures 6 and '2', rests upon the strip 12 and is secured in position thereon as will be hereinafter described. This tray 13 is preferably arranged to be foldable or collapsible so. that when desired, it may be folded to decrease its size and consequently enlarge the size of the hat-containing compartment to accommodate large sized hats or hats having a considerable amount of trimming.
With this end in view I provide the tray 13 with pivoted ends 14;, said ends being pivoted substantially on the lines 15 and 16.
The tray 13 is utilized for carrying various articles of clothing or toilet articles, and for the accommodation of such articles I provide the central portion of the tray, on
the under side thereof, with a suitable expansible pocket 17 a closure means for said pocket being provided in the nature of a tab 18 provided with a snap fastener member 19 engaging a complementary snap-fastener member on the pocket.
On the opposite, or upper face of the tray 13 I providea pair of transversely extending expansible bands 20 which are adapted to overlie and hold on the tray, articles of clothing or the like. In addition these bands 20 may be utilized to overlie the pivotal members 14 of the tray, when said pivotal members are in their folded position, whereby said pivoted members are prevented from loosely flapping about in the box while the box is being carried.
To secure the tray in position within the box, the tray is provided at each of its four edges with a projecting tab 21, each of said tabs 21 being provided with a snap fastener member 22 which engages with a stud member 23 on the walls 2 of the box.
If desired a plurality of aligned stud fastener members 23 may be placed on the front and back walls of the box as is dis closed in Figure 1, whereby the tray 18 is adjustable on the ledge 12 when in its folded position, and may be retained in such ad justed position.
The cover at of the box is also utilized to hold articles of clothing or like articles and for this purpose it is provided with a large expansible pocket 2% intended to receive such articles, said pocket having its opening upwards when the cover 4: is in its raised position as shown in Figure 4.
Detachably secured over said pocket 24 is an elongated, flexible pocket member 25 in the nature of a flat strip of material, and which is provided with a plurality of expansible pockets 26 intended to receive toilet articles or the like. The member 25 is secured in position over the pocket 24: by
means of snap fasteners or other detachable fastening means, the stud member 27 of each fastener being secured to the cover while the socket member 28 is attached to the pocket member 25. By means of the foregoing arrangement it will be understood that the pocket member 25 can be readily detached from the cover without disturbing the arrangement of the box and its contents in general. In addition, the flexibility of the strip forming the back of the pocket member enables it to act as a partition member for the cover 4 as disclosed in Figure a so that articles can be held in back of it.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very compact receptacle for carrying hats, in which the hat-containing area is regulatable; in which all waste space is made use of, and which is provided with a complete detachable pocket member for carrying toilet articles or the like. i
It will be understood that the manner in which the pockets are arranged on the cover and on the tray may be varied in many Ways and thatthe shape of the box and the form of pivotal tray may likewise be varied and many other changes in the structure of my improved device may be made without dearting from the spirit of my invention.
What Iclaim is:-
1. A device of the class described comprising a hat box having a hat-containing compartment, a foldable tray and means for supporting the same within the box, said tray being foldable to decrease its size and to increase the area of the hat-containing compartment and 'means for holding said tray in its folded position.
2. In a device of the class described, a foldable tray and a support for the same, said tray having a plurality of portions adapted to be folded with respect to one another and means for retaining said tray on its support in its folded position while the box is closed.
3. A. device of the class described comprising a box having a hat-containing compartment, a foldable tray'mounted thereover, means on said tray for holding articles. a support for said tray, said tray being shiftable on its support and means for holding it in various positions thereon.
:1. A device of the class described comprising a hat box cover having an expansible pocket, a flexible strip detachably secured thereovm' and a plurality of pockets on said strip. 1
Signed at the city, county and State of New York this 31st day of December, 1920.
