Be it ltnown that I, VEmmen-'rn CALKINS, a citizen of the Unitedbtates. and a resident of St. Joseph, in Ithe county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Vest, of which he following is a full, clear, and exact description.

rI'his invention relates to a vest, and aims to provide a device of this nature whereby the shoulder straps provided with a conventional shirt or vest may be eliminated.

It is a well-known fact, )articularly in connection with evening dress, that great diiculty is experienced in preventing the shoulder straps of a ladys shirt or vest from becoming visible, and for this reason they are usually tucked inside one of the nether garments. During subsequent movement of the body, such as in dancing, this arrangement often results in the straps bccoming cumbersome. and there is also the danger of their working out to the embarrassment of the wearer.

For this reason I have devised a vest or shirt which may be worn. in connection with the corset, so that the same is supported by the corset, thus eliminating the necessity for shoulder straps. IVhile this arrangement is particularly to be desired in connection with evening dress, I wish to point out that the same might readily be utilized in every-day wear.-

It will further be seen, particularly where the vest is provided vith small sleeves, that tucking such sleeves inside the corset would cause the wearer to become extremely warm at these points.

A further object of the invention is the provision of means associated with such vest which will render the same capable of conforming to thc corset and body when the laces. usually provided at the rear of the corset, are properly adjusted so that the corset is correctly applied.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which illustrate one practical embodiment of my invention, and in which Figure l is a front elevational view of a closed corset with my vest or shirt attached thereto; and

Fig. 2 is also a front elevational view with the corset open and one corner of the vest or shirt detached therefrom so as to disclose the method of application.

This vest is provided with a draw string To provide a vest which will accommodate itself to all adjustments of the corset, I find it necessary to make the saine with a certain fullness at a point imderlying the strings of the corset. as indicated by the reference numeral (3. It is also advantageous to have the vest, as indicated by the reference numeral T, cut so as to provide a certain fullness at points overlying the upper sides of the body. A

The vest may be of any length or provided with any fancy-work desired. The vest is entirely removable from the corset, by means of the snap fasteners et, for the purpose of washing. It will be understood that the reason for cuttingsuch vest or shirt slightly fuller than is the common practice is that corsets when new are inclined to stretch and shape themselves to the contom of the body. Duringv this period it is necessary to secure a proper adjustment, so that the corset may not be uncomfortable, by means of the draw stringl 9, and it will be seen that the fullness mentioned is essential to permitting this adjustment.

From the above it will be seen that I have constructed a sleeveless vest which may be applied to any corset and which can, obviously be made of any suitable material. It will further be seen that by having the vest fit the lower edge of the corset loosely, with an extra fullness in the center of the back and a small amount of fullness toward the front, with a corresponding fullness adjacent the upper parts of the corset. the wearer will be capable of drawing up the vest so as to adjust the abdomen, which is naturally depressed in applying any corset.

During this period of adjustment the eXtra fullness in certain portions of the vest may be let out so as to conform to the corset. This adjust-ment is also very de" si able after a corset has been washed, at which time the same must again pass through this rearrangement.

It is to be further appreciated that any number of modifications in structure may be employed Without in the slightest departing from the scope of my claims, as, for instance, forming a special kind of plait to accommodate the fullness of the vest or shirt, substituting different forms of fastening means in lieu of snap fasteners, etc.

Having thus described my invention, l desire to claim:

l. An article of apparel including, in combination With a corset, a shirt attached to the inner face thereof.

2. An article of apparel including, in combination with a corset, a shirt removably attached to the inner face thereof.

3. An article of apparel including', in coinbination with a corset, a shirt attached to the inner face thereof, such shirt being cut full at a point underlying the conventional draw strings of the corset.

4. An article of apparel including, in combination with a corset, a shirt attached to the inner face thereof, said shirt being cut so as to provide a slight fullness at the upper ends of the sides of the corset.
