MATCH-CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Application fi1ed May 31, 1919. .Serial No. 300,977.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANs I-IUMM, citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match- Containers, of which the following is a specifica tion. 7
Tliisinvention relates generally to match containers, and more particularly to such devices which have means for delivering a single match at a time'into a tray at the bottom thereof, the match having been me anwhile. ignited.
The object of my invention is to provide such a match container of simple and novel construction, inexpensive, to manufacture, and readily operable by anybody.
This and other objects will become ap having an upwardly projecting rear memher 2 provided with holes or slots 3 for securing the device to a wall. A cover 4 1s hinged to the top of the side members and provided with a folded projection 5 adapted to cooperate with a ridge "6 in the front member of the casing to lock said cover.
Said front member is inclined as shown to provide a substantially funnel-shaped chamber.
The side members are constructed as shown at 7 in Fig. 1, with bearings 8 adapted to support the ends of a drum shaft 9. A drum 10 having a number of longitudinal peripheral slots or grooves 11 is mounted on said shaft, said grooves being of a depth and width to comfortably receive a match.
A narrowed, curved, spring band 12 pro-- 'ects downward from said front member in surface contact with the periphery of the drum 10. The side members 7 are cut to provide extending ears 13 and 14, the latter being bent slightly inward and having roughened inside surfaces 15. A narrowed Patented Apr. c, 1920'.
receiving tray 19 is secured to the other ears18, as shown.
A curved chamber to the rear member 2 of the casing, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, extending *in whole to the periphery of drum 10; there.-
after itssides are prolonged as spring-fin gers 1'7, which pass between the side. mem-' here -7 and the drum 10, extending a short distance outward'from the drum at the front of the device. The lower extremity of the rear member 2 is looped throughout its width, as shown in Fig.2, said loop removlate 16 issecuredinside the ably locking saiddrum by engaging a groove 11. One end of the drumshaft 9 ,is provided witha thumb piece or handle 18, for v turning the drum.
The operation of the device is now apparent. Matches are contained in the chamher as shown by 20 in Fig. 2. On turning the handle 19 in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 2, a single match, previously embedded in a groove 11, is carried downward by the drum 10 toward the tray 19. As the match leaves the chamber, it is engaged by the spring band 12, which contacts with the upper surface of the match and prevents the match from falling from the groove. I
After traveling a short distance, from the] i 8 chamber, the ends of the match, which proj ectfrom the ends of the drum, are engaged by the spring fingers 17, which clamp the match against the band 12. Asthe match is carried forward, it gradually pushes said fingers downward until itpasses over them, whence said fingers spring back to normal position, in which they prevent the match from returningto the chamber. On further advance of the match its ends contact with the roughened surfaces 17 wherebyits sulfurous end is ignited. It then continues until it just clears the band 12. At this point another groove'll is so arranged that it becomes engaged by the loop 17 this engagement is abrupt and causes said loop to strike the drum a blow which tosses the match from its groove into .the tray 19.
Thus it is impossible for the'match to stick in its groove and'dangerouslv heat'up the chamber containing the remaining matches. If desirable, an entire box of matches may be inserted in the chamber, after the lower end of the box has been removed, instead of placing the matches directly in the chamber. Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows: 1.- A match container comprising a chamber inclosed by a-casing, a drum having peripheral slots therein mounted rotatably in the bottom thereof, a tray attached to said casing below and forward of said drum, spring fingers adjacent the ends of said drum, and means to tap'said drum to throw the match into said tray. when said match is clear of said band. v
2. A match container comprising a chamber inclosed by a casing, a drum'having peripheral slots therein mounted rotatably in the bottom thereof, a tray attached to said i casing below and forward 'of said drum, spring fingers adjacent the ends of said "drum to prevent the return of a match into said chamber, and means at the back of said casing to tap the drum so as to throw the.
match into said tray when said match is "clear of said band.
3. A match container comprising a chamber inclosed by a casing, a drum having peripheral slots therein mounted rotatably in the bottom thereof, a tray attached to said casing below and forward of said drum, a curved spring band extending from the forward member of said casing, spring fingers adjacent the ends of said drum to prevent the return of a match into said chamber, and means-to tap said drum to throwr the match into said tray when said match has cleared said band, sa1d means comprlslng a spring member provided with a looped end in peripheral contact with said drum and fingers adjacent the ends: of said drum to prevent the return of a match to said chamber, and means to tap said drum to -throw the match into said tray when said match has cleared said hand, said means comprising a-'-loop in the lower end of the rearmember of said casing adapted to fallinto-one of said slots when coincident with thelatter in its peripheral movement.
Signed at New Yorlgin'the county of New York and State of I New York, this 22d day of May, A. D. 1919. r HANS 'HUMM.
