FABRIC-TREATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 13, 1920.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. DUDLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric-Treating Devices, of which the following yis a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to fabric treating devices and refers particularly to those devices suitable for 'treating wound fabrics wit dyeing liquids. f
One object of my invention is a device whereby a series of wound fabrics may be subjected simultaneously to equal and uniform treatment with dyeing liquids.
Another object of my invention is a device in which fabric of any width may be subjected to equal and uniform treatment with dyeing liquids. Y
Another object of my invention is a device in which a dyeing liquid may be passed in opposite directions through a series of wound fabrics to produce even and uniform results.
Another obj ect of my invention is a device in which wound fabric may be maintained in a fixed position during the passage of a liquid through it in opposite directions.
Another object of my invention is a device in which the condition of the fabric may be determined without opening the device, interrupting the operation or disturbing the fabric.
These and other objects of the device of my invention will be evident upon a consideration of my specification, drawings and claims.
A number of difficulties present themselves in the treatment of wound fabrics such as dyeing, washing and bleaching. All portions of the fabric must receive equal treatment in order that the interior, exterior and edges of the fabric may be uniform, equal penetration must exist in all parts, andthe device must be capable of treating fabric of varying widths. In addition to these requirements, it is advantageous to treat a number of woundfabrics simultaneously in order to save time and labor and insure uniformity of results. Further, it is essential that the condition of the treated fabric be capable of judgment from time to time without disturbing the fabric or interrupting the operation.
The device of my invention accomplishes all of these desirable results and presents a method whereby a number of fabrics of varying widths may be treated equally and uniformly in a simple, rapid and economical manner, and the treated condition observed without interrupting the operation or disturbing the fabric. i

' The particular form of the device of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a series of cylindrical bodies 20, 2O supported by the frame work 21. The flange 22 of each body 20 is attached to the conical shaped end members 23 by means of the bolts 24, 24e', and the flange 25 of each body 20 is attached to the conical end member 26 by means of the bolts 27, 27. Within each body 20 and extending therethrough is a series of fabric chambers 28, 28, each having a series of longitudinal channels 29, 29. The end member 26 is extended into the cylindrical portion 30, which is connected to a pipe 31 connected to the discharge chamber of the pump 32 and carrying the valve 33. The receiving chamber of the pump 32 is connected to the pipe 34 carrying the valve 35 and connected to a dissolving tank, not shown. The pipe 34 is connected to the pipe 36 carrying the valve A37.` Thereceiving chamber of the pump 32 is connected to the pipe 38 connected to the bottom of the reserve tank 39 and carrying the valve 40. The pipe 31 is connected to the pipe 41, opening into the top of the tank 39 and carrying the valve 42. The end member 23 is extended into the cylindrical member 43 which is connected to the pipe 44 connected to the discharge chamber or the pump 45 and carrying the valve 46. The receiving chamber of the pump 45 is connected to the pipe 47, carrying the valve 48 and connected ,to a dissolving tank, not shown. The pipe 47 is connected to the pipe 49 carrying the valve 50. The receiving chamber of the pump 45 is also connected to the pipe 51 carrying the valve 52 and connected to the bottom of the reserve tank 39. The pipe 44 is connected to the pipe 53 carrying the valve 54 and opening into the top of the tank 39.
The pipes 36 and 49 are connected to a source of fresh water supply.
The fabric-carrying members comprise a hollow cylindrical core, formed of an imu perforate section 60 and a foraminous section 61, the detailed description of the latter being described later. Slidable over each end 60 of the core, and abuttable thereon, is a stepped annular member 62. Pivotally attached to the member 62 at 63 is a series of link members each comprising the link 64, and pivotally attached to the members 60 at 65 is a series of link members each comprising the link 66, the links 64 and 66 being pivotally attached to each other at 67. rl`he member 68 carrying an opening 69 is pivotally attached to 67. A spring steel band 70 passes through the openings 69, 69 of the series of members 68, 68, its two ends being connected by the right and left turnbuckle 71.
The foraminous portion of the core comprises a series of intersecting bands or strips with the openings 72, 72 between them, the strips have an outwardly extended pointed member 73 between each point of intersection of the strips. Each stepped member 62 has an offset 74, allowing the member 62 to slide over and abut upon, the extended members 73, 73.
A carrying case for the fabric-carrying member comprises two annular rims or rings 80, 80 spaced from each other and connected together by means of a series oi connecting bars 81, 81, each one of which carries a series of extended revoluble ball bearings 82, 82. Each rim 80 is composed oi two parts hinged at 83 and bolted together by the bolts 84, 84. The members 62, 62 of the fabric-carrying member abut upon the inner faces of the members 80, 80 of the carrying case.
A Flexible cover for encompassing the fabric 100 comprises two annular end members 85, 85 carrying a series o1c openings capable o1" receiving the series of serrated bars 86, 86, the bars extending inwardly 01"' the members 85, 85. rEhe bars 86, 86 comprise two members offset intermediate of their ends to allow slidable movement over cach other, the bars being connected by means of spiral springs 87, 87. rllhe cover consists of two parts hinged at 88 and bolted together at 89, 89. v
A spider 90 is attached to the extended member 91 of the body 20 by means of the bolts 92, 92. The spider 90 has a portion 93 having a threaded opening 94, into which is threaded a series oi members 95, 95. The inward end oit' each member 95 has a reduced portion 96, fitting in, and revoluble within, an opening 97 of a hollow conical member 98. The inward portion of the member 93 abuts upon the member 62 andy is slidable through and abuttable upon the inner face of the member 80, forming a water-tight joint between the members 98, 80 and 62.
The inward portion of the member 23 carries a series of hollow cylindrical members 99, 99. Each member fits within an opening in the plate 101 which is attached to the body 20 by means ot the bolts 102, 102 threaded within the openings 103, 103, the member 101 being slidable over the members 99, 99. Ilhe member 101 carries a seriesA oi' extended members 104, 104 capable of abutment upon the members 62, 62 a water-tight oint being formed between the members 99, 101, 104 and 62. The member 60 forms a water-tight joint within the opening 105 of the member 99.
rThe members 25, 26 and 30 are attached to the carriages 110, 110 running on the track 111 by means of the suspension bars 112, 112.
The device also comprises two similar testing devices, as shown in cross-section in Fig. 9. These testing devices are similar to and proportionate to the larger device each containing onev fabric chamber, similar parts being indicated by prime numerals in Fig. 9. The member 30 is connected to the pipe 120 carrying the valve 121 and opening into the conical member 26. rEhe member 43 is connected to the pipe 122, carrying the valve 123 and opening into the conical member 23.
The modifications o1 the oraminous member shown in Figs. 14 and 15 comprise a series o1" intersecting bladesv in the :term of bisected diamondshaped members having extended pointed members 73, 73 between. the intersections with openings 72, 72 Jfor the passage of afliquid.
The modification shown in Fig. 16 comprises a series of intersecting blades in the form of triangles with the extended members 73, 73 and the openings 72, 72.
The operation of the device is as follows, the fabric chambers being open and the core removed The fabric 100 is wound around each foraminous core, the flanges 62, 62 are brought into abutment with the edges of the fabric by means of the turnbuckle 71. raminous cover is placed around the wound fabric 100 and clamped by means of the bolts 89, 89, the springs S7, 87 causing the length of the blades S6, 36 to agree with the width of the fabric. The thus wound foraminous core is then inserted within the carrying case and the carrying case with its wound core is then rolled into a fabric chamber 28, the rollers S2, 82 rolling within the runways 29, 29. rllhe interior end of the member 60 of the imperforate portion of the core lits within the annular opening 105 forming a waterftight joint. The spider 90 with its conical member 98 is then inserted, fastened. by the bolts 92, 92 and the conical member 93 forced into tight engagement with the mem bers 62 and 80 by means of the threaded member 95. The members 101 and 104 are moved by means of the threaded members 102, 102 until the member 104 forms a tight engagement with the members 62 and 80. Each fabric chamber is thus loaded. The members 26, 30, 31 and 32 are rolled along the truck 111 until the member 26 abuts upon the flange 25 and fastened thereto by the bolts 27, 27. Connections are then made with the pipes 120, 120, 41, 3S and 34. The testing device is then removed by removing the bolts 24, 24', 27 27, and loaded in the same way and replaced. All of the valves are closed with the exception of valves 35, 33, 121, 121, 123, 123 and 54 and the pump 32 started. The liquid now passes from the dissolving tank, not shown, through the pipe 34, the pump 32, the pipe 31 and the members 30 and 26, through the spider 90, the opening 150, between the bars Sl, 81, through the foraminous cover and thence inwardly through the wound fiber 100 into the interior of the core and then through the members 23 and 43 and the pipe 53 into the reserve tank 39. At the same time the liquid passes through the testing device in a similar manner. l/Vhen suflicient liquid has been introduced into the reserve tank 39` the valve 35 is closed and the valve 40 opened. thus allowing a continuous circulation of the liquid in the manner described. 1When it is desired to reverse the flow of the liquid, valves 40, 33 and 54 are closed, valves 46, 52 and 42 opened, pump 32 is stopped and the pump 45 started. The liquid now has a reversed flow, passing from the interior of the core outwardly through the rllhe fowound fabric and into the reserve tank: for continuous circulation. Fresh water for washing the fabric, or other liquid for treatment may be obtained by opening either as shown and described, all of which may be changed without going beyond the scope of my invention as described and claimed.
vWhat I claim is 1. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a foraminous core capable of having a fabric wound thereon, a foraminous cover capable of abutment upon the exterior of the fabric, means for closing all of the openingsof the core except those adjacent to the fabric, a carrier for the wound core capable of insertion within a fabric chamber, means whereby a liquid may pass inwardly through the wound fabric, means whereby a liquid may pass outwardly through the wound fabric and means for passing a liquid in either di rection through the device.
2. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a partially foramr nous core capable of having a fabric wound thereon, a foraminous cover capable of abutment upon the exterior of the fabric, means for closing all of the openings of the core except those adjacent to the fabric, a carrier for the wound core capable of insertion within a fabric chamber, roller bearings upon the exterior of the carrier, means whereby a liquid may pass inwardly through the wound fabric, means whereby a liquid may pass outwardly through the wound fabric and means for passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
3. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a. foraminous core capable of having a fabric wound thereon, imperforate members slidable over and abuttable upon the foraminous core, means for slidably moving the slidable member to abut upon fabric wound upon the core, a foraminous carrier for the wound core capable of insertion within a fabric chamber', roller bearings upon the exterior of the carrier,
means whereby a liquid may pass inwardly through the wound fabric, means whereby a liquid pass outwardly through the wound fabric and means for passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
4. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a foraminous core capable of having a fabric wound thereon, imperforate members slidable over and abuttable upon the foraminous core, closing all of the openings therein except those between the slidable members, means for moving the slidable members, a foraminous cover abuttable upon the wound fabric, a foraminous carrier for the wound core capable of insertion within a fabric chamber, means whereby a liquid may pass inwardly through the wound fabric, means whereby a liquid may pass outwardly through the wound fabric, means for preventing the liquid from contact with the means operating the slidable members and means for passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
5. ln a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a foraminous core capable of having a fabric wound thereon, imperforate members slidable over and abuttable upon the foraminous core, closing all of the openings therein except those between the slidable members, toggle means for moving the slidable members with respect to each other,an adjustable foraminous cover capable of abutment upon the wound cloth, a foraminous carrier for the wound core, roller bearings upon the carrier capable of movement within run-ways of the fabric chamber walls, means whereby a liquid introduced into one end of the fabric chamber will pass inwardly through the carrier, the cover, the wound fabric and the core, means whereby a liquid introduced into the other end of the fabric chamber will pass outwardly through the core, the wound fabric, the cover and the carrier, means for protecting the toggle joints from contact with the liquid and means for continuously passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
6. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, va foraminous core having openings between outwardly eX- tended members and capable of having a fabric wound. thereon, a foraminous cover capable of abutment upon the exterior of the fabric, means for limiting the openings of the core to the width of the fabric, a carrier for the wound core capable of insertion within a fabric chamber, means whereby a liquid may pass inwardly through the wound fabric, means whereby a liquid may pass outwardly through the wound fabric and means for passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
7. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a foraminous core havingopenings between outwardly extended members and capable of having a fabric wound thereon, imperforate members slidable over and abuttable upon the foraminous core, means for slidably moving the slidable member to abut upon fabric wound upon the core, a foramino'us carrier for the wound core capable of insertion within a fabric chamber, roller bearings upon the exterior of the carrier, means whereby a liquid may pass inwardly through the wound fabric, means whereby a liquid may pass outwardly through the wound fabric and means for passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
S. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a foraminous core having openings between outwardly eX- tended members and capable of having` a fabric wound thereon, imperforate members slidable over and abuttable upon the foraminous core closing all of the openings therein except those between the slidable members, means for moving the slidable members, a foraminous cover abuttable upon the wound fabric, a foraminous carrier for the wound core comprising a series of parallel bars capable of insertion within a fabric chamber, means whereby a liquid may pass inwardly through the wound fabric, means whereby a liquid may pass outwardly through the wound fabric, means for preventing' the liquid from contact with the means operating the slidable members and means for passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
9. In a dyeing machine, in combination, a series of fabric chambers, a foraminous core having openings between outwardly extended mem-bers and capable of having a fabric wound thereon, imperforate members slidable over and abuttable upon the foraminous core, closing all of the openings therein except those between the slidable nembers, toggle means for moving the slidable members with respect to each other, an adjustable foraminous cover comprising a series of parallel serrated blades capable of abutment upon the wound cloth, a foraminious carrier comprising a series of parallel blades for the wound core, roller bearings upon the carrier capable of movement within runsways of the fabric chamber walls, means whereby a liquid introduced into one end of the fabric chamber will pass inwardly through the carrier, the cover, the wound fabric and the core, means whereby a liquid introduced into the other end of the fabric chamber will pass outwardly through the core, the wound fabric, the cover and the carrier, means for protecting the toggle joints from contact with the liquid and means for continuously passing a liquid in either direction through the device.
