ENGINE-HANDLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 6, 1920.
Application filed July 6, 1918. Serial No. 243,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bonner Ronnns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gonde, in the county of Spink and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in lilngine-l-Iandling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to engine handling devices and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide the device of the character stated which is of simple and durable structure and which may be easily and conveniently used for handling an engine during the time that the same is being leveled or positioned upon its foundation.
With this object in view the device coinprises a plate having an opening through which the hook of a hoisting device or apparatus may be inserted. A vertically disposed slot communicates at its upper end with the lower portion of the said opening. Chains are connected with the opposite side portions of the plate and carry plugs adapted to be screwed into the head of the engine. A third chain is provided and its links may be passed through the opening and engaged between the edges of the said slot. The last mentioned chain carries a hook which may be engaged under the engine shaft or base at a point remote from the engine cylinder or head.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side view of the engine and link. device.
Fig. 2 is a view of the link device removed from the engine.
The engine handling device comprises a plate 1 of metal and which is approximately fan shaped. The plate 1 is provided at its upper portion with a circular opening 2 through which a hook 3 of a hoisting device or apparatus may be inserted. A slot 4 is provided in the lower portion of the plate 1 and the upper end of the said slot communicates with the opening 2. Chains 5 are connected with the opposite side portions of the plate 1 at the lower end thereof, and the chains carry at their lower ends plugs 6 which may be screwed into the head of the engine. The device also includes a chain 7 which carries at its lower end a hook 8. The links of the chain 7 may be passed through the opening 2 and then one link may be passed down between the edges of the slot a whereby the chain 7 is held at an adjusted position with relation to the plate 1.
In operation the plugs 6 are screwed into the head of the engine after two of the bolts have been removed from the engine head. The hook 8 is engaged under a portion of the base of the engine or under its shaft and the chain 7 is adjusted through the opening 2 and secured in the slot 4 as hereinbefore described. The engine is then lifted by exerting a lifting or pulling strain upon the hook 3. After the engine is elevated above the surface of the ground or floor the chain 7 may be then again adjusted to position the base of the engine level or horizontal. After this has been Zt-OCOlIlPllSllGCl the engine may be lowered upon its foundation and secured in a usual manner.
From the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that an engine handling device of simple structure is provided and that the same may be conveniently used to advantage for leveling or setting an engine in a horizontal position upon its base.
Having described the invention what is claimed is An engine handling device comprising a plate provided with an opening and having a slot which communicates with the opening, chains connected with the opposite side portions of the plate, plugs carried by the said chains, and a third chain adapted to pass through the opening and engage between the edges of the slot and a hook carried by the last mentioned chain.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ROBERT ROUNDS.
