WILLIAM S. GREENE, OF, PROVIDENCE, RHODEISLAND, ASSIG-NOR TO B. A. AND W. G.
GREENE, A COPARTNERSHIP, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND. I
LINGERIE-CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
Application filed May 23, 1919. Serial No. 299,206.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lingerie-Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lingerie clasps, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a clasp which has improved means for engaging the material so as to hold the clasp in position against slipping or other accidental movement.
The invention further aims to provide a simple, cheap and effective structure for ac complishing the foregoing aim, and to generally improve the structure and increase the simplicity of the clasp without detracting from and to the contrary to improve the appearance thereof, so as to maintain the lines generally possessed by clasps of this character.
The invention briefly involves a clasp having a pair of opposed jaws, and a pair of knobs 0r protuberances which latter are formed by slitting one of the jaws and then rolling the metal between the slits, thereby to provide projections which confront the other jaw, or lie between the two jaws so as to effectively bite into the material or grasp same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the entire clasp is formed, and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of Fig. 3, showing the, metal between the sllts bent outwardly from the strip and ready for rolling thereof.
In proceeding in accordance with the invention, a blank as depicted in Figs. 3 and 4: is formed with substantially U-shaped and oppositely disposed slits 1, the metal 2 between said slits being rolled toward each other to form a pair of spaced projectlons, or knobs. That portion of the blank 1n which the slits 1 are formed, provides the lower jaw 3 of the completed clasp as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, while the opposite end portion of the blank forms the upper jaw 4 of the clasp. The free ends of the jaws are curved at 5 and 6 so as to interlock to thereby provide the customary snap fastening for the jaws.
The knobs 2 it will be apparent by virtue of being rounded will not tear or catch in the lingerie or other material, but will act to engage same in a manner to prevent slip page or other movement of the clasp when the latter is positioned and fastened by the means 5'-6.
The entire device is thus not only formed of a single piece of material, but in addition the knobs contribute a pleasing appearance, harmonizing with the curved ends of the jaws, and also allow the side edges of the stripto remain intact. By the provision of a pair of spaced knobs the material will be gripped at two correspondingly spaced points, to thus increase the eifective holding of the clasp in position. The free ends of the curled or rolled members 2 directly confront the clasp 3 so that no portions thereof are exposed such as might cause injury to the material. In addition, the knobs are located at points between the side edges of the jaws so that the material will engage entirely about the knobs, and the latter will be protected by the jaws as is apparent. The knobs have rounded tops and flat sides thereby tending to resist sidewise movement of the clasp.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a lingerie clasp, a strip bent to form two opposed jaws the free ends of which are curved and interengaged, one of the jaws being formed with a pair of spaced U-slits separated by a solid part of the jaw, the material between the sides of each of the slits being curled or rolled toward each other, and the extreme free ends of the material lying closely adjacent to and opposite the said solid part of the jaw which separates the slits, said curled or rolled parts name to this specification in the presence of forming rounded fabric engaging knobs (1)11 two subscribing Witnesses. and between which the other jaw forces tie 4 lingerie or fabric the knobs being located WILLIAM GREENE 5 opposite to the central portion of said other Witnesses: jaw. v ADA E. HAGERTY,
In testimony whereof I have signed my J. A. MILLER.
It is hereby certified that the name of the last-mentioned assignee, in Letters Patent No. 1,325,399, granted December 16, 1919, upon the application of William S. Greene, of Providence, Rhode Island, for an improvement in Lingerie-Clasps, I
as erroneously Written and printed as W. G. Greene, Whereas said name should have been Written and printed as W. S. Greene; as shown by the record of assignments in this officefand that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the casein the Patent Office.
Signed and sealed this 16th day of March, A D., 1920.
[SEAL] M. H. COULSTON,
Acting Commissioner of Patents. 01. 24259.
