Description

Feb. 4, 1930. A. M. GRECO COMBINED SOCK AND GAR'I'ER Fil ed July 15 1927 I gfvwemtoz Meme g Patented Feb. 4, 1930 AUBELIO M. GIG-ECO, F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT COMBINED so ox AND enn'rnn Application filed July 15, 1927. Serial No. 205,960. I
This invention relates to an article of clothing, and more particularly to a combination Took and garter adapted to be worn upon the Jne object ofthis invention is to provide an article of clothing of the above nature in which the sock has a pair of apertures in its upper edge for receiving a garter band which encircles the leg above the calf.
A further object is to provide an article of clothing of the above nature in which the sock is provided with an upwardly extend- "ing flap for loosely and slidably receiving the garter band.
tion sock and garter in which the sock will be more securely supported than with the former types of garters having depending fasteners which were likely to open and release the sock, and werealso likely to press into the leg.
A further object is to provide a device of this nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, ornamental in appearance, and very efi'icient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there have been illustrated on the accompanying drawings two forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice Fig. 1 represents a front view of the combination sock and garter as it appears when in use upon the leg of the user.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the upper part of the sock as it appears before the garter band has been placed in position.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the garter band in fiat condition before it has been wrapped about the leg.
Fig. 4 is a front viewof a modified form of combination sock and garter as it appears when in use upon the leg of the user.
Fig. 5 is a front view of the upper part of the sock of the modifiedform of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a front view of the garter-band of the modified form of the invention, as it appears in flat condition.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding A further object is to provide a combinaparts throughout the several views, the first form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 includes a socl: 10 of the customary form having a pair of slits 11 and 12 adjacent the center of the top edge thereof. lhe slits 11 and 12 are formed similar to button holes and have enlarged circular recesses 13 at their upper ends.
The garter band employed with the first form of the invention comprises a pair of side members 14 and 15 preferably of elastic fabric, said side members having oppositely inclined inner ends 16 and 17 arranged adj acent one another, as clearly shown in Fig. 3,
and connected by a narrow strip of fabric 18,
said strip 18 being located along the lower edges of said members 14 and 15. By means of the above construction, when the combined sock and garter is being worn, the connecting strip 18 of the garter band will be drawn downwardly into the angular shape shown in Fig. 1 with the inclined edges 16 and 17 veitical and substantially in contact with each 01: er.
The side member 14 is provided adjacent its outer end with a loop of fabric 19 for holding a rectangular metal frame 20 having an upstanding enlarged central button 21. The other side member 15 is provided upon its outer end with a metal frame 22 having a narrow tapered eye member 23 of the usual form for fitting about the button 21.
' In order to permit the size of the garter band to be adjusted to fit the leg 23 upon which it is worn, provision is made of a rec tangular buckle member 24 of the usual type located on the side member 15 just inside the outer metal frame 22.
In operation, when the sock 10 is supported on the leg 23 by the garter band, the connecting strip 18 of said band will automatically move upwardly into the upper enlarged sections 13 of the slits 11 and12due-to the upward forces of the band which has a tendency to straighten itself out. The sock 10 will thus be pulled up tightly at the center by the narrow connecting strip 18.
The second form of the invention shown in the sock 25 is formed with an upwardly projecting tab 26 at the center of its upper edge, said tab having a pair of slits 27 similar in all respects to the slits l1 and 12 of the first form. The garter band in this instance comprises a pair of side members 28 and 29 having their inner central ends 30 and 31 made V-shapcd, and said side members are connected by a narrow strip 32. The strip 32 is positioned along the center lines of the side members 28 and 29 and passes through the apexes of said V-shaped inner ends.
In the use of this modified form of combined sock and garter, the garter band will lie entirely above the upper edge of the sock, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, thereby eliminating any possibility of interference between said garter band and said sock.
While there have been disclosed in this specification two forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
1. In a combined sock and garter, asock having a pair of vertical slits in its 'upper edge, and a garter band passing through said slits and detachably secured around the leg of the wearer, said band comprising a pair of side members connected at their inner ends by a narrow strip of fabric, the inner ends of said band being inclined at an angle to each other so that when in use said inclined ends will lie substantially in contact with each other.
2. In a combined sock and garter, a sock having a pair of vertical slits, and a garter band passing through said slits and detachably secured around the wearers leg, said band comprising a pair of side members permanently joined at their front ends by a narrow connecting strip, said front ends being reduced in width so that they will not overlap or otherwise interfere with each other when the device is in wearing position.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature to this specification.
AURELIO M. GRECO.
