To 'all whom t may concern Beit known that I, RICHARD B. VVAGONER,

va citizen of the' United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in MilklBottle Safes,v of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to deposit and collection receptacles and more especially to those intended for milk and other domestic commodities which are usually lefty at the door earlv in the morning.

The'objec-t of the invention isto produce a safe having compartments in which milk bottles' and thev like may be left, the door to each compartmentbe'ing locked bythe weight of the milk bottle when dropped into the safe, whereby it is necessary for the housewife tocoi'ne later and open the entire cover of the receptacle in order to get the bottle or bottles. I

This object and other objects are carried out by the construction described in the following specification, set forth in'y the claims, and shown in the drawings, wherein:-

The 'numeral l'designates a box-like body, preferably of metal and of proper size and finish so that it shall be an object of ornament to the porch rather than otherwise. To this end it'may be appropriately painted and perhaps ornamented. It is vsecured to a post or perhapsagainst a wall alongside the kitchen door or elsewhere within convenient and easy access of the lhousewife l'in the morning. The'action of this device is now as follows: Normally each pocket stands inthe position occupied by that atV the left of Fig.` 1, with theupper. and lower ends of its 'back 12 against both cleats and the 'outer end of its foot 13 raised o the bottom ofthe receptacle or body. This follows because the pocket is strictly right angular, whereas the space for the pocketv is not quite right angular because of the difference in width of the two cleats. Now when the milkman comes and drops a bottle B. through the trap door 7, the latter is swing forcibly open against the tension of the spring hinge 8, possibly flying back against they cushion 17, and the bottle falls onto the'cushion 15 as seen at the right of Fig.. 1. The weight of the lled bottle nowV bears down flat onto the bottom-of the body, with the result thatthe upright portionor back 12 is swung inward to a slight extent and stands vertical as seenat the right ofFig. l, rather thanoblique 'as seen at the left in Fig. l. This brings the upper end of the the foot 13 baci; under the 'free elge or the trap door and prevents an unauthorized person or in 'tact any person from pushing down on the trap door, so long as the parts remain as shown and described. The result is that the only means of access to the interior is through the opening of the cover, and this cannot occur until the lock 5 is unlocked by the proper person. Thus the weight of the bot le is used to swing the upright member of the right-angular pocket 'beneath the i'ree oit the trap door, and in eect it locks this door against being opened until the entire cover 2 is raised and the bottle removed. The parts immediately then resume the position shown at the lett of Fig` l by reason of the contractile spring 18.

What is claimed as new is l. "in a deposit and collection receptacle, the combination with a rectangular body whose top has a pair of openings, trap doors independently closing said openings, spring hinges holding them normally closed, and a cushion 'lor each door within the body; or a cleat across the interior of the body just under said top, a second cleat across the interior ot the body at the bottom thereo'r, a pair or right-angular pockets having upright backs standing next each other and eetprojectino' away from each other, cushions on said reet, and a contractile spring connecting the backs and drawing them normally against both cleats, substantially as described.

2. ln a deposit and collection receptacle, thel combination with the body having an opening in its top, and a door closing said oneninc1 from the interior of the bod'1 and AL b mounted on a spring hinge; oi' a right-angular pocket i isposed within said body and including an upright back, a foot, and side wings connecting these parts, a cleat on the bottom oi' said body delining a ulcrum point for the angle between said back and Jfoot, and yielding means drawing the upper end of said back normally out from under the Jfree end ot said door but permitting its movement beneath said free end under the influence of the weight of an article resting on said toot.

3. ln a deposit and collection receptacle, the combination with the body having an opening in its top, and a door closing said opening from the interior of the body and mounted on a spring hinge; ot a right-angular pocket disposed within said body and including an upright back, a toot, and side wings connecting these parts, a cleat on the bottom or' said body delining a ulcrum point for the angle between said back and toot, a second cleat beneath the cover of said body, and a spring drawing the back et said pocket normally against both cleats but permitting the upper end of said back to move away from said last-named cleat under the influence ofthe weight ot an artt cle resting on said foot.

4. In a deposit and collection receptacle, the combination with a rectangular body, a hinged cover theretor having a pair of open` ings, trap doors independently closing said openings, spring hinges at the outer edges of said doors holding them normally closed, and a lock for securing said cover to the body; of a narrow strip across the interior of the body just under said cover, a wider strip across the interior of the body at the bottom thereof, right angular pockets within the body with their backs next each other and their feet projecting away from each other, and a contractile spring connecting said backs and holding their upper edges normally against said narrow strip and their feet normally raised ott the bottom ot the bot y, the whole for use substantially as described.

5. ln a deposit and collection receptacle,

the combination with a rectangular body, a hinged cover thereor having a pair of open` ings, trap doors independently closing said openings, spring hinges at the outer edges of said doors holding them normally closed, and a lock for securing said cover to the body; of a narrow strip across the interior of the body just under said cover, a wider strip across the interior of the body at the bottom thereof, a pair of right-angular pockets having upright backs standing next each other, right-angular Jfeet projecting away from each other, and side wings connecting the other parts, cushions on said feet, and a contractile' spring connecting the backs, the tension oil the spring being such as to hold the upper ends of said backs nor" mally out from under the free edges of the trap doors but to permit their movement thereunder when impelled by the weight of a milk bottle on the foot, substantially as described.

6. In a. deposit and collection receptacle, the combination with a body whose top has a pair of openings, trap doors independently closing said openings, spring hinges non mally holding them closed, of a cleat across the interior of the body just under said top, a second cleat across the interior of the body at the bottom thereof, a pair of right angular pockets having upright backs standing next each other and a contractile spring connecting the backs and drawing them normally against both cleats,substantially as described.
