COMBINED MAIL-BOX AND MILK-BOTTLE HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Prrnn MAGZUZAK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Keiser, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania,

have invented certain new and useful Improvemenets in Combined Mail-Box and Milk-Bottle Holders, of which the following is a specification. V j I This lnvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined mail box and milk bottle holder.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a serviceable device adapted to be conveniently positioned for receiving bot-j tles of milk from the vender as well as mail matter from the postman, the same being arranged for preventing both the bottles and mail from being stolen.

A further object of the device is the pro,- vision of a bottle casing, one portion thereof serviceable as a mail box normally locked and the other constituting a milk bottle receiver normally open for the reception of a bottle, the same being locked upon positioning a bottle therein, access tothe bottle being then had through the mail box when the latter is unlocked.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device having communicating compartments adapted for the reception of mail and bottles, the bottle compartment being only accessible through the outer and inner doors of the mail compartment when the bottle compartment is closed.

WVith these general, objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the acompanying drawings, and then claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the same. Figs. 4: and 5 are transverse vertical sectional views taken respectively upon lines IVIV and VV of Fig. 1. Fig 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken upon line VIVI of Fig. 1, and, Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail sectional view of one of the spring devices for the lid.

The present invention contemplates a twopart casing 10 having a mail box portion 11 arranged for recelvlng mall matter within the chamber 12 thereof and a bottle receptacle 13adapted to'receive a bottle 14: of such a commodity as milk within the chamber 15 thereof, the said bottle being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

ing closure '19 while a door 20 is mounted 7 upon the front of the mail box 11 adapted to be normally maintained closed by means of a sultable lock 21.

The partition 22 between the aforemen-, tioned chambers 12 and 15 is provided with a swinging door 23 having a closing spring receptacle 13'being provided with a hinged closing lid 28. A resilient device for normally maintainingthe lid 28 open is provided consisting of depending socket cups 29 carried by the receptacle top 27 at opposite points adjacent the hinge connections 30 of the said lid, helical springs 31 being arranged within the cups 29 and normally projected above the plane of the top 27 in engagement with the lower face of the lid 28. A latch in the form of a springpressed bolt 32 is carried by the inner face of the receptacle to 27 adapted for automatically engaging a depending staple 33 carried by the lid 28 and having a path of movement transversely of the longitudinal axis of the bolt 32 during the closing of the lid 28.

The casing 10 is provided with a projecting attaching flange 34 by means of which the device mybe secured to any convenient support with the back 35 of the casing flatly engaging the same.

From this detailed description it will be understood that the outside mail door 20 is normally secured closed by the lock 21,

the partition door 23 being secured by the latch 25 while the lid 28 of the bottle receptacle 13 is normally open. The milk man elevates the lid 28, placing the bottle 14; within the receiving chamber 15 and thereafter forces down the lid 28 for engaging the bolt 32 with the staple 38 of the lid thereby securing the lid and preventing the milk bottle from being stolen. Mail matter is readily placed Within the mail box chamber 12 through the receiving slot 18 in the usual manner and When it is desired to remove the mail or the bottle 14, the mail box door 20 is unlocked and opened, admitting ready access tothe mail chamber 12. The latch may then be released and the hand inserted through the parti tion 22 for removing the milk bottle 14 from the chamber 15 through the partition door-Way 36 and the door-way 37 of the mail box 11. The bolt 32 is readily retracted from the interior of the chamber 15 allowing the springs 31 to elevate the lid 28 to its open position While the door 23 is then, closed and secured by the latch 25 after Which the outside door 20 is closed. and secured by the lock 21.

The device is preferably formed of metal and it Will be seen provides a safe deposit device for bottles of milk and mail matter and hile the form of the invention herein illustrated is believed tobe the preferred Copies of this patent may be obtained for construction thereof, minor changes may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

1. A device of the class described comprising a casing having a partition therein dividing the interior of the casing into mail and bottle receiving chambers, an outside door for the mail chamber, a door carried by the said partition and operable only from the mail chamber a lid for the said bottle chamber, and an automatic retaining latch bolt for the said lid.

2. A container comprising a mail boX and bottle receiver adjacently positioned With a door-Way therebetween whereby access may be had to the interior of the receptacle from the said mail box, a normally locked entrance door to the said mail box, the said receptacle having a bottle receiving opening in the top thereof, a normally open. lid for the said receptacle opening, automatic locking means for the lid When closed, and automatic opening means for the lid When released from the said locking means.
