To-aZZ whom t may concern.'v
Be it known that l, HARRY LANDSIEDEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cinn cinnati, county ot' ltiamilton7 and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Recordiiig-h/lachine, oi which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to recording machines.
The invention has particular reference to mechanism vfor shifting the paper carriage ofthe recording machine alternately in opposite directions to different adjusted positions, in order to permit the recording mechanism to record items in parallel vertical columns; such lrecording being performed by recording items alternately in the different columns thus, in a general sense, recording items in a number of vertical columns concurrently. i
The invention also includes mechanism operating, as an'incident to shifting of the paper carriage to one of its adjusted positions, to disable the adding mechanism of the machine. ln the orm'of the invention shown the adding mechanism is disabled by connections operated by the paper carriage to retain the adding mechanism out of operative engagement with the actuating racks, so that said racks are tree to operate in accompaniment with the recording'mec-hanism without disturbing or operating tlie'adding mechanism. As a result of this construetionl one of the vertical columns ot items listed will not be added.
The usual line space mechanism of the machine is controlled so that the respective items of the different columns may be recorded in the saine horizontal lines. Inthe operation of the machine an item is recorded in one column and .the papercarriage is shifted laterally to present another column in position to have an item or number recorded therein; and the linev space mechalnism is held inoperative during this `lateral movement of the paper carriage. As a result of this construction and operation the respective numbers in the different columns are print-ed on the same horizontal lines. However, as an incident to the recording of y the number in the last column in which numbers are recorded, the line space mechanism is operated to feed the paper in line spacing so that as an incident to movement of the paper carriageto its initialcolumnar position the paper is moved to present aninvention may with equal advantage vand adaptability be embodied in various types of recordingmachines.
In the accompanying drawings, vin which the invention is slioWn Figure v1 is a sectional view of a DaltonA y adding machine illustrating the invention mounted ltherein and connected With the paper carriage of the machine for vmoving the paper carriage alternately in .opposite ldirections to different columnar positions.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention'.
Fig. 3'is an enlarged detail view of a part. of the mechanism included in the present invention. y i
Fig. '4 is a view of a part of the coniiections operated by the paper carriage in one position thereof to disable the adding mechanism. This view shows the connections in the positions to which they are operated by the paper carriage.
Fig. 5 is a view showing the position of a part of the'connec'tions when the paper carriage is in position to permit the adding mechanism to function.
Fig. 6 is a view illustrating the devices controlling the operation of the line space mechanisi Fig. 7 is another view of the devices controlling the operationl of the line Aspace mechanism.
As shown inthe drawings and asis well known the Dalton machine includes a laterally movable paper carriage 1 containing a platen 2 around and upon whichthe pape-r is supported in position to' receive records from the'printing type. The type 3 of said machine are' mounted on type-carriers and .are operable thereby to record the desired .items upon theV paper vin the paper carriage.
lso
and .the inner portion thereof extends through and is supported Within a slot in a.
bracket 42. Outward movementof the stem 41 is lilnited by a lateral extension 43 0n the inner end of the stem, the saine being arranged to contact with the bracket. The stem 41 has a finger button 44 on its outer "end whereby the stem may be conveniently operated. When the stem 41 is pressed in wardly the lower end of the lever 37 1s raised a sufiicient distance to lift the link 32 out of engagement with the projections 35, thus leaving the leverr 30 free to operate while disconnected from the link 32. Thus the recording. mechanism of the machine may be operated Without moving they paper carriage from the adjusted position in -which it is placed before the stem 41 isA .pressed inwardly. The" stem 41 may be latched in its inner position, the same being provided with a notch 45 adapted to engage with the case of the machine.
outwardly by the pressure o'f the lever 4ink 31 under impulse of the spring 36.
In the embodiment vof the invention shown, the adding mechanism of themachine is held inoperative and is prevented from adding thenumbers listed in one of the vertical columns. As shown, one of theframe members 46 y(Fig. 4) of the paper carriage is formed with a shoulder or cam. 47 whlch, in one of .the columnar positions of the paper carriage, engages a roller 48 carried by the upper end of a -lever 49. The lever 49 is pivotallysupported upon a shaft 50 and extent of movement thereof is limited by a pin 51 extending into a hole 52in the lever. The lower end of the lever 49 has pin-in-slot connection 53 with a link 54,
thus permitting limited relative movement between the lever 49 and said link. A retractile spring 55 connects thelower end of the lever 49 with the rear end of the link 54, said spring tending to hold the lever and the linkin the relative positions shown in Fig. 5. A spring 56 connects the lever 49 with a part of the frame of the machine and is operative to draw said lever to its idle position when the paper carriage is moved to disengage the shoulder 47 from the roller 48.
Referring now' to the adding mechanism of the Dalton adding machine, it is well' .Dalton adding machine the frames 59 are moved 'as required to engage. the adding When thestem 41 is disengaged it will be moved pinions with the racks 60 and to disengage said pinions 'from said racks by a link 61 operated ina well Aknown manner by a depinions with the racks, and it is su 'cient for present purposes to understand andto assume that such operation, in fact, is effected. AThe opposite'end of the shaft 63 in the Dalton machine has attached thereto a plate 64 and pivotally supports a .leverA 65` having a pin 66 engaging in a notch in the plate 64, thus limiting movement of said lever 65 relative to said plate. The lower portioi'of the lever65 carries a roller 67 which is engaged by a plate 68 on the shaft 26 when said shaft is turned in a forward direction, as required to turn lthe shaft 63 and cause the device 62 to effect disengagement of the adding pinions from the racks. As the plate'68. starts to -return toward its initial position Lor starting point it engages the roller 67 and turns the shaft 63 in a di:y rection to cause the device 62 to effect enga ement vof the adding pinions 57 with the rac rs 60, thus enabling said racks to operate the adding pinions during the return movement of the racks. This construction and' this operation thereof under control of the main rock shaft 26 of the Dalton ma- Ichine is well known and requires no further or extended explanation. j
.My present invention utilizes the link 54 'to move the lever 65 to position to prevent operation' thereof .by the plate 68 during return movement of said plate, thus preventing. said plate from turning the shaft 63 which would result in rengagement of the adding pinions with the racks 60. As shown, the lever 65 is extended and has pinin-slot connection 69 with the link 54. The length of the slot 69 is suoli that when the link 54 is in its forward position to which it is actuated by the spring 55, the rear end of the slot engages the pin l69 and actuates the lower end of the lever 65 forwardly to hold the roller 67 out of the path of movement of the vplate 68. rfhis leaves the plate 6.8 free to return to its starting point without engaging the roller 67 and therefore leaves inoperative the mechanism .for moving thel adding pinions into and out of engagement with their actuating racks.
lV hen the papercarriage is shifted to another columnar position lthe shoulder 47 is released from the roller 48, whereupon the spring 5G withdraws the lever 49 and said lever withdraws or actuates rearwardly the link 54, due to the fact that .the pin 53 en-i gages the rear .wall of the slot` through which it extends and there-by moves said link.
The slot (i9 is of suhcient length to permit free movement of the lever by the plate G8 without moving or disturbing the link 54 when the paper carriage is in position to permit functioning of the addingy mechanism. l
As mentioned in the statement ot the nature of the invention the line space mechanism is controlled so that it will net operate to move the paper after the recording ot a number in the first column, but is rendered inoperative in order to permit the paper carriage to move to position so that the corresponding item in the next column will be recorded on the same horizontal line as the item recorded in the first column. The line space mechanism includes a ratchet wheel ligs. 6 and 7) attached to the platen sha t 7l. A. rod 72 is supported by the paper carriage for rocking` movements and at one end thereof ajacent to the wheel 70 a lever 7 3 is attached. A pawl 7l is pivetally `supported by the lever 73 and engages the teeth ot the ratchet wheel 70 so that when the rod 72 turned in one direction the pawl will ride over one or more. teeth of the wheel 70 without turnin said wheel. This movement occurs, as will presently appear, as the type carriers move to recording position. Alfter printing has been etl'ected the rod 72vis turned back to its initial position and the pawl 7i engaging a tooth ot' the wheel 70 turns said wheel and thereby the platen to Jf'eed the paper in line spacing. A spring; 75 connects the tail of the pawl 74'with a projection en the lever 73, thereby holding the pawl in engagement with the wheel 70.
An arm 7G is supported by the rod 72. As shown in Fig. (S, the rod 72 comprises.l cylindrical portions 72 and rectangular portions 72. The arm 76 has a rectangular opening,- therethrough so that when said arm is engaged with the rectangular portions 72b ot the rod 72, said rod may be rocked by oscillation oi the arm; but when said arm is engaged with the cylindrical portions 72a the arm will turn upon the rod without tur ug the rod. As the paper carriage is moved laterally the arm 76 is held from lateral movement with the carriage by a projection 77 in connection with the case ot' the machine which permits the arm to be `oseillated as required to operate the line space mechanism, but which holds the arm from lateral movement when the paper carriage is moved laterally, thus sliding; the arm along' thel rod 7.2. l
A link 7H has its rear end pivoled to one. of the usual oseillatino arms 7%?. lt is well known that the arms if) constitute parts ot' a hail which controls the operation ot the recording mechanism in the Dalton adding;
machine, and that said arms 79 are swung forwardly at each forward turning movement of the shaft 26 and are turned rearwardly at each rearward turning movement oi said shaft The forward end of the link 76 is formed with a slot 80 which is nearly horizontal -for a portion ol its length and the forward end et which curves downwardly. A screw 81 supported by the machine t'rame extends through the slot 8O and supports the forward end ot the link 78. The lower end of the arm 77 carries a roller 82 which engages in a notch 83 in the link 78. Since the link 7 8 is reciprocated at each operation of the recording mechanism, the arm 7 is oscillated at each operation of the recording mechanism.
The carriage shitting mechanism is illustrated in Fig. 2 in position to present the first or left hand column of paper at the recording mechanism. In such position theV item will be recorded 1n the first er lett hand column and the paper carriage will be shifted laterally without operation of the line spacemechanislm it being understood that the arm 7G is engaged upon one ot the cylindrical portions 72 of the rod 72 when the carriage shitting; mechanism is in the position shown in Fig.
From the foregoing it is apparent that the invention fully accomplishes its object.
The paper carriage will be moved automati.
ca llyin alternately opposite directions to di'llerent columnar positions; and, when it is desired to record successively, in a single column the carriage shitting mechanism may be rendered inactive Yby the simple manipulation and adjustment ot' the stem nll. However, when items or numbers are recorded in different columns -the adding mechanism is automatically prevented from `t'unctioiiingas an incident to movement of the paper carriage to one or its columnar positions. Thus, any identifying numbers such, for instance, as car numbers or the like, may be recorded in one column and such numbers will not `be added or included in the totals added in the adding pinions.
lt is clear that the particular construction and arrangenient of the mechanism may be varied without departure trom the. principle ot' the invention. l do not restrict myseli` to unessential features or details of construction, hut what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
