Be it known that I, THOMAS J. J AGKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati. in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Device for Sealing Fruit-Jars, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of this invention to provide novel means for sealing a fruit jar or like receptacle, without resorting to the use of unsanitary rubber washers or gaskets.

It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description procecds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The numeral 1 marks a receptacle, such as a fruit jar, having threads 2 on its neck. A lid 3 is provided, and includes a top 4 and a depending flange 5, the flange 5 being adapted to cooperate with the threads 2 on the receptacle 1. A plate 6 of glass or crockery ware may be held in the lid 3 in abutment with the top 4, or, if desired, the plate 6 may be omitted. The structure above described constitutes a common fruit jar of the Mason type.

In carrying out the invention, an imperforate disk 7, which may be made out of card board, or any other absorbent material, rests on the upper end of the receptacle 1, within the flange 5 of the top l. The disk 7 is coated with fusible material indicated Specification of Letters Patent.

at 8, this fusible material being paralfin, if desired. A ring 9 rests on the layer of material 8 on the disk 7 and fits closely within the flange 5, the ring being divided as shown at 10 to form separable ends 11. The ring is of circular section as indicated at 12.

In practical operation, when the lid 3 is threaded down in place, the top 4 of the lid cooperates with the ring 9 and presses the ring into the layer 8 of fusible material on the disk 7. The fusible material is heated by the contents of the receptacle, and cooperates with the ring 9 to effect an airtight closure. Owing to the fact that the ring 9 is divided as shown at 10, to form the separable ends 11, the ring will tend to expand and to fit closely within the flange 5, when the lid 3 is threaded down to a firm seat on the ring. The general construction of the device is such that an unusually secure sealing of the receptacle is afforded, the common rubber ring or gasket being dis pensed with, and there being nothing exposed about the periphery of the receptacle 1 or its lid 3, which is subject to deterioration.

Since the ring 9 is of circular cross section, as shown at 12, the ring tends to embed itself in the paraffin layer 8 and in the disk 7 thereby effecting a secure sealing of the receptacle. Again, the ring acts as a filler and serves to take up the space between the top 4: of the lid 3 and the upper end of the receptacle 1 due to irregularities in manufacture. The ring 9 may be used as a templet, for the purpose of laying out the disks 7 during the cutting thereof.
