Description

H. COE AND C. P. LAWRENCE.
IDENTIFICATION DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1919.
1 20,448. Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
T all whom-it mag concern:
HERBERT Coin and HERBERT COE AND CHARLES IP. LAWRENCE, YORK, N. Y.
IDENTIFICATION DEVICE.
Be it known that we, CHAnLns P. Lawrence, both citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a' certain new and useful Identification Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to identification devices.
Heretofore, a large amount of inconveniences, delays and losses have been experienced, in the shipment of goods, baggage, or other articles, through the accidental destruction, loss or effacement of the tag, label, or other means bearing the. recipients or consignees name and address and other such data.
The principal object of our invention is to remedy the above mentioned difficulties and disadvantages, and to provide simple, eco-- nomical, conveniently utilizable, and improved means wherewith the shipper will be enabled to ascertain the data: concerning the addressee, in case of any accidental loss or efiacement of the regular address.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
The accompanying drawing shows a crosssectional plan view of the identification device.
The identification device is adapted for trunks, hand baggage, and similar articles. In the case of such articles, the wall 7 thereof, which we will assume to be that of a trunk, is provided with a circular opening 8, in which there is fitted a circular wall 9 extending from a metal flange 10, which is secured to the wall '4' on the inner side of the trunk by the rivets 11 and is provided with a tapped hub 12 the center line of which coincides with that of the wall 9. A short metal tube 13, which is closed at one end by a plate 1% secured thereto, is fastened to the hub 12 and extends into the interior of the trunk. Access may be thus gained to the interior of tube 13 through the opening 8 lined by the wall 9 and the tapped opening 15 of the hub 12, and the tube 13 may be closed by a plug 16 which threads into the opening 15. 4
Then it is desired to forward the trunk or similar article, it may be properly marked with the proper name and address by any usual means, such as a pastel, and then a slip of paper, bearing the addressees name and V Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed May 26, 191's. Serial No. 299,785.

address, may inserted into the tube" and the plug 16 threaded in place into the hub 12. The slip of paper bearing the address will now remain concealed within the tube 13 and thoroughly protected therewithin, until such time as the regular exposed address should become effaeed from some accidental cause, whereupon the plug 16 may be removed, by applying a screw-driver to the notched projection 17 thereof, and the paper slip may be then removed from the tube 13 and read to ascertain the particulars regarding the addressee. The carrier may then remark the trunk, replace the paper slip within the tube 1.3 and close it with the plug 16, and send off the trunk to its proper destination. The face of the wall 8 may have marked thereon the inscription In case address is lost remove this plate. It will be evident that this device will not in any way detract from the neatness of appearance or flushnessof the trunk or other article, inasmuch as the structure is entirely on the interior side of the trunk wall, and the only visible parts on the exterior are the wall 9 and the plug 16 therewithin.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. A device for identifying receptacles in transit having the combination of means for containing an address-bearing element located on the inside side of the wall of the receptacle and being secured thereto, the receptacle having an opening extending therethroughfor gaining access into said means, and removable means for closing said means at said opening and concealing said addressbearing element.
2. A device for identifying receptacles in transit having the combination of a tube for containing an address-bearing element located on the inside side of the wall of the receptacle and being secured thereto, the receptacle having an opening extending therethrough for gaining access into said tube, and a removable plug for closing said tube through said opening and concealing said addressbearing element within the tube.
3. A device for identifying receptacles in transit having the combination of a tube for containing an address-bearing element located on the inside side of the wall of the receptacle and proj ecting therefrom, a flange located in the interior of the receptacle and secured'toth'e Wall thereof, said tube being tapped opening through the opening in the closed at one end and having its other end"1'eceptacle and concealing said address-bean 1U secured to said flange, said flange having a ing element within. the tube. .t
tapped opening leading to the interior, of Signed at the city of New York, in the said tube, the wall of said receptacle having county of New York, and State of New an opening extending therethrough leading York, this 23rd day of May, A D. 1919 to said tapped opening, and a threaded plug HERBERT COE. t c for closing said tube threading into said 7 CHARLES P.
