T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BURNS, a citizen of the United States residing at La Crosse, in the county of La rosse and State of `Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders and Return-Labels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to label holders and labels for use in the identification of returned packages.

The object of the invention isto provide a simple holder and return label for use in the identification of returned packages.

In the shipment of beer 1n barrels, or other packages, considerable difficulty is encountered in ascertaining from whom the package was returned, by reason of the loss of the original label bearing the consignees name and address. In my construction the address is written in duplicate and one copy is placed in the label holder and covered by a piece of oiled cardboard or other suitable material and over this is pasted the other copy. It follows, of course, that, even though the outer label be destroyed, the other copy will be securely held within the holder so that on the return of the empty package to the brewery or other establishment there will be no diiiculty in identifying it.

rl`he above object I accomplish by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 3 is a like View with the cover partially in place. Fig. 4 is a perspective of the duplicate label. Figs. 5 and 6 are cross sections at right angles to each other through the holder.

A designates a portion vof a package, such as a beer barrel or shipping boX, and a is a recess therein.

B designates a label holder of a size to tit in the recess a flush with or below the face of the package. This holder B is formed from a single sheet of metal turned 'up at its ends b, b, and turned up at its longitudinal edges, as at b', b', and thence bent and are driven into the package to secure the holder in recess a.

is a piece of Hexible material, such as waterproof cardboard, light sheet metal, &c., of a size to be bent so that its longitudinal edges will spring under the anges b2, b2 and form a removable cover for the holder B. This cover may be removed by simply inserting a knife blade or other instrument under one end and bending the cover outwardly, when it may be grasped by the lingers and removed.

D isv the label formed with its address blank in duplicate, the body of the label having certain printed matter, as shown, suitable for use in the shipment of beer in cases, barrels and portions of barrels.

In use, the address is written in duplicate and the body of the label filled out according to the goods shipped. The short label portion D2 bearing the consignees name and address is placed in the holder B and' the cover sprung into position. rlhe larger label D, properly filled in with the consignees name and address, is then pasted over the whole label holder andthe package shipped.

When thepackage is reshipped to the consignor V1t 1s properly returned, owing to the name being burned into the wood in this class of packages.

Now, 1n the event of the label D being destroyed or removed, it will only be necessary to lift o the cover C and remove the concealed label D2 to lind out who reshipped the package and so make proper credlt on the books of the brewery, &c.

An immense amount of work and worry may thus be saved the owners of the packages in identifying from whom they have been returned empty. Moreover, no Aextra work is required, as by the use of an interposed sheet of carbon paper both label members are written upon at the same time.

What I claim is:
