Description

"1. R. ELLIFF.
ANIMAL TAIL HOLDER. APPLICATION msu mmzz. 191e.
l,320,21 3. Y .Patented 0G13. 28,1919.
' JAMES R. ELLIFF, 0F I-ISUM, WASHINGTON.
ANIMAL-TLAL HOLDER. i
speeieeation of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
' Application filed March 22, 1918'. Serial No. 224,039.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES R. ELLirr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Husum, in the county of Klickitaf and State of Washington, have invented nevt7 and useful Improvements in Animal-Tail Holders, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to holders for the tails of cows and other animals.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to construct a novel animal tail holder embodying a resilient animal leg clamping member having a reinforced shank and a relatively rigid tail clamping member, in order that a comparatively comfortable yet eiicient contact will be eifected with the leg of an animal; while the shank, j
or that portion subjected to the greatest strain, and the tail holding portion will be adequately reinforced and of such construction as will effectually lock the tail of an animal against undue movement.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide in connection with the leg clamping member of a tail holder, means for reinforcing the same at its oint of greatest strain while preserving su cient resiliency to effect a comparatively comfortable contact with the leg of an animal.
A further object of the invention is to construct the body of the device of a continuous strand of wire or the like in order that it may be cheaply and quickly manufactured at a very small cost.
Vith theabove and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure is a perspective view of the invention.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a cow tail holder formed from a single piece of resilient wire which is bent approximately intermediate its ends to provide a substantially U-shaped leg clamping member embodying brackets 1 and side `arms 2 restricted adjacent their outer ends to form guides 3 for facilitating application of the same on the leg of an animal. The arms are folded upon themselves as at 4 to provide other arms 5 which are bent so as to conform to the shape of the arms 2 and lie in contact therewith, the construction in effect providing duplex clamping arms. One of the duplex clamping arms is coiled as at 10 and anchored about the inner end of the adjacent arm 2 near the intermediate portion 1 while a portion of the wire l1 continuing from the coil is spaced from the rear surface of the intermediate portion 1 and is bent outwardly at an angle to form a shank 8 which terminates in a tail clamping hook 9. The other arm 5 terminates at its inner end in a coil 6 which is anchored about the adj acent portion 2 near the intermediate portion 1 while the reinforcing portion 7 continues from the coil in spaced relation to the rear of the intermediate portion 1 and terminates in a coil 12 which is anchored about the strand of wire at the point of juncture of the reinforcing portion 1l and the shank 8 serving to coperate with the portion 7 which also acts as a reinforcement, for reinforcing and strengthening the shank 8 of the tail .clamping hook 9 to increase the rigidity at the point of wire on which the greatest strain is subjected consequently insuring the effective engagement of the hook 9 on the tail of an animal.
In using the invention the hook 9 is rst clamped on the tail of an animal whereupon the leg clamping member is applied upon one of the rear legs of the animal and from the rear side thereof and owing to the resiliency is retained in position to consequently lock the tail of the animal against movement.
It is believed that in view of the foregoing description a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary. Likewisel it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
' As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof and it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limited sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention which as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is l. A coW tail holder formed from a single piece of substantially resilient Wire bent approximately intermediate its ends to form a substantially U-shaped leg clampinginember embodying an intermediate portion and side arms continuing` therefrom and restricted at their outer ends to form guides for facilitating application of the leg engaging member, other arms continuing from the terminals of the guides and lying; in close relation with the first arms, coils formed at the terminals of the last mentioned arms and anchored about the first mentioned arms near the intermediate portion, a reinforcing portion projectingl from one of the coils, a shank projecting` at an angle from the reinforcing' portion, a tail clamping hook formed on the terminal of the shank, another reinforcing portion continuing from the other coil, and a coil formed at the terminal of the last mentioned reinforcing portion and anchored on a piece of Wire at the point of juncture of the rst mentioned reinforcing portion on the shank.
2. A cow tail holder formed from a single piece of resilient Wire7 bent to form a hook and a substantially U-shaped leg clampingl member, the leg clamping member embodying an intermediate portion and a pair of oppositely disposed arms7 the Wire formingl said arms being bent back on itself at the terminals of the arms to form other arms following` the outline of and lying` adjacent to the first said arms, the Wire comprising the second said arms being coiled around that comprising the rst said arms, one terminal of said Wire being` continued to form a shank and the aforesaid hook, the other terminal of said wire being coiled around said shank.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMns R. ELLIFF.
