Description

June 5, 1923. 1,457,631
y C. E. STOCKHAM cow TAIL HOLDER Filed July 24. 1922 Patented June 5, 1923.
Cow-TAILv HOLDER.
Application filed July. 24, 1922. Serial No. 576,923.l
To all 'whom t may concern Befit known that I, LCHBLES'E. STOCK- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Cow-Tail Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cow tail holder of simple, durable and com aratively inexpensive construction.
ore particularly, my invention relates to a device adapted to be secured to the tail of a cow and one of her hind legs for preventing the cowl from switching her tail, while milking.
Still another object is to provide such a device wherein the parts may be adjusted for more convenient use on cows of various sizes.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view of my improved cow tail holder shown in use on a cow.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of my device; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view, taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
In the accompanying drawing, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally a web belt or strap. Secured to one end of the strap 10 is a clip member A. The clip member A is designed to engage the hind leg of the cow, as clearly illustrated in Fi re 1.
he clip A is provided with a hook portion 11, and with a contracted portion 12. The ends of the clip A are bent outwardly from the portion 12 and are aga-in brought to ether for forming a loop 13.
ne end of the strap 10 extends through the loop 13 and is bent over, as at 14, and riveted together by means of the rivets 15.
At the contracted portion of the clip A, I provide a band 16 which securely holds the wire member of the clip A against any possible distortion. 'Ihe clip A extends over the tendonk of the hind leg of the cow.
A tail engaging clip B is provided, which is made of a single strip of wire. The clip B is provided with a loop 17 arranged sub- 'sentan lileithe lQ-pi; in mdia A. "A
B and a band 19 extends therearound. Extending through the loop 17 in the clip B is the strap 10.
In order to hold the strap 10 against being easily pulled out of the loop 17, I provide a friction band 20. The band 20 receives the double thickness of the strap 10 and prevents one end of the strap 10 from being easily pulled out.
If'it is desired tolengthen the distance between the clip A and the clip B, it can be accomplished by sliding the friction band 20.
The cow tail engaging clip B is formed of spring material, as is the clip A. The clip B is provided with ay substantially open loop shaped portion 21, which holds the tail when the device is in use.
The free 'edge of the clip B, as at 22, is spaced considerably from the remainder of the clip so as to provide a comparatively wide portion, through which the tail of the cow may pass into the portion 21.
My device is used upon a cow in the following described manner. The clip A is secured to the tendon of one of the hind legs of the cow, and the strap 10 is then eX- tended forwardly and around the outside of the leg of the cow. The strap is then pulled against the inner side of the hind leg of the cow and rearwardly a sufficient distance so that the tail may be secured in the clip B. The end of the cows tail is held by the hand, while the clip B is slipped into proper position. Either the tendon of the hind leg may be engaged, or the tail, as desired.
The arrangement of the strap is such that it permits some4 slight movement of the cows tail, and yet not enough movement so as to make it undesirable.
The use o-f the tail holder prevents dirt and other foreign matter from being dropped -into the milk by the switching of the cows tail, and at the same time prevents the milker of the cow from being slashed.
My device is very simple and can readily be manufactured and easily assembled.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention and it is my intention to cover by my claim, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within its scope.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the Class described adapted for holding a coWs tail against switching movement including a flexible strap member 5 having a loop formed on one end thereof, a clip designed to engage the tendon of one of the hind legs of the cow, said clip having a loop arranged to receive the loop of the strap member for securing them together,
1 said clip being formed of spring material, a second elip having a loop formed thereon and having a spring hook portion for en. gaging the oovvs tail, said strap being eX- tended through the loop of said second clip and a friction band on said strap for holding the end of said strap in position, the parts being so arranged that the friction band may be slid on the strap for varying the distance between said clips for the purposes stated.
