Description
E. P. LA MOREAUX,
EXTENSIONFINGER PIECE FOR TYPE WRITERS.
APPLICATION Hm) MAYG. 1919.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
IVJTNESSES:
UNITED STATES P TENT onmon EDWARD 1?. LA MOREAUX, 0F PONDERAY,'IDAHO.
EXTENSION FINGER-PIECE FOR TYPE-WRITERS.
Application filed May 6, 1919. "semi No. 295,065.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known'that-I, EDWARD P. LA Mo- REAUX, a citizen of the United'States, and residing at Ponderay, in the county of Bonher and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension F inger-Pieces for. Type-lVriters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an extension finger piece adapted especially for use on typewriters, and designed to form an attachment and extension for'the carriage release of a typewriter, whereby such carriage release can be more conveniently operated than with the use of the ordinary carriage release, which, especially in certain makes of typewriters, is somewhat 'inacces' slble and inconvenient, requirlng the oper ator to reach too far, and sometimes resulting in the accidental displacement of other parts of the machine in reaching the carriage release.
It is the object of the invention to provide a simple and inexpensive device provided with novel means for attachment to a carriage release finger piece, or the like, and forming an extension, whereby the operation of such lever is rendered more convenient and efiicient.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts here inafter described, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a typewriter showing the attachment applied, only a portion of the-typewriter being shown for sake of clearness.
Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the main part of the attachment.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the clamping piece.
In :F ig. 1 there is illustrated .the carriage release lever 1 of a standard make of typewriter, provided with the finger piece 2 adjacent to the knob 3 of the platen. This finger piece 2 being at one side of the ma chine and somewhat out of the way, is more or less inaccessible and inconvenient to op erate.
The present attachment includes two Specification of Letters Patent.

pieces or parts, which can be readily made from strlps of metal or other; sultable stock,
and 'the'main part has a clamping portion 4 with a shank 5 extending at an obtuse angle front one end thereof, and an elongated finger piece 6 extending at an obtuse angle from the shank 5. Theportion 4 extends rearwardly under the fingerpiece 2 when the attachment is applied, with the shank 5 extending upwardly and forwardly, and the finger piece 6 extending forwardly within convenient reach of the operator, said finger piece being offset upwardly from the portion 4.- I
The main part is clamped to thefinger piece 2 by a clamping piece 7 disposed over the portion 4 of the' main part, and provided at its forward end with the lugs 8 to engage in notches 9 provided in the side edges of the shank 5 adjacent to the portion 4. The portion 4 and clamping piece 7 are provided adjacent to their other ends with apertures 10 receiving a bolt 11 or other clamping member, whereby when the clamp formed by the portion 4 and piece 7 is slipped sidewise over the finger piece 2, the bolt 11 in being tightened, will swing the portion 4 and piece 7 toward one another to clamp them to the finger piece, thus making the attachment or extension rigid with the lever 1. By loosening the bolt 11, the device can be readily removed when necessary for making adjustments or repairs. The attachment when applied renders the operation of the carriage release more convenient, and provides for greater ease and speed in operating the machine.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. An attachment of the character described embodying a main part having a clamping portion and a shank extending at an angle from one end thereof and provided with a finger piece, a clamping piece extending along and cooperating with said clamping portion to slip over and clamp a finger piece, one end of said clamping piece and said shank having portions fitting together for connecting the clamping piece to the main part, and a clamping member extending through said clamping piece and portion near the opposite end of said piece.
2. A attachment of the character described embodying a main part having a clamping portion and an extension finger piece, a clamping piece extending along said clamping portion to slip over a finger piece for clamping it between said clamping piece and portion, one end of said clamping piece and the main part having portions for the engagement of the said end of the clamping piece by a longitudinal movement of said piece with the main part, and clamping means for clamping said clamping piece and portion near the opposite end of said clamping piece.
3. An attachment of the character described embodying a main part having a clamping portion and a finger piece extension, a clamping piece cooperating with said clamping portion to slip over a finger piece, said main part being notched, one end of said clamping piece engaging the notched portion of the main part, and a clamping member connecting the clamping piece at its other end with the main part.
4. An attachment of the character described embodying a main part having a clamping portion, and a shank extending at an angle from one end of said portion and provided with a finger piece, said shank being notched, a clamping piece cooperatlng with said clamping portion to slip over and clamp a finger piece, one end of the clamping piece engaging the notched portion of said shank, and means for clamping said clamping piece and portion to the finger piece. 1
5. An attachment of the character described embodying a main part having a clamping portion and a shank extending at an angle from one end thereof and provided with a finger piece, said shank having notches in its edges adjacent to one end of said portion, a clamping piece cooperating with said clamping portion to slip overand clamp a finger piece, and having lugs at one end engaging in said notches, and a bolt connecting said clamping piece and portionat the other end.
In testimony whereof Ihereunto set my hand.
EDWARD P. LA MOREAUX.
