JAMES BOGAN IBELK, OE CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA.
PUMP.
Application filed January 17, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. BELK. a
I citizen of the United States, residing at Charlottesville, in the county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented newand useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is aspecification.
. This invention'relates to a novel construction of oil pump ofthe self-measuring type and the principal objectof the inventlon 1s to provide means whereby difierent kinds of oils may be delivered by the'sa'me apparatus. I
Another object of the invention 1s to provide a single handle with means for connecting it to any one of anum ber of pumps for delivering. the desired kind of oil or gasolene.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described and illus trated in the accompanying drawings and specifically {pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a Vertical section with parts i elevation.
Fig. 3 is a detailed view of one of the cog wheels. Fig. 4: is a view of the operating its handle. V
In these views, 1 indicates the housing for shaft and 'inclosing the measuring cylinders 2 and the operative parts of the apparatus. The
drawing shows three of these measuring cylinders though it willbe understood any de-v sired number of these cylinders may be used. These cylinders are connected with the oil tanks, as usual and each cylinder is pro- 'comprismg ahousing, a plurality of pumps A cross shaft 6 is suitably journaled in the upper part of the housing and is provided with a handle 7, whereby the shaft may be Specification of Letters Patent.
wheels are moved into' operative position,
withtheir teeth engaging the racks.
The means for shifting the cog wheels on the shaft comprises a plurality of bell crank levers 11, eachof which is provided with a forked end for engaging an annular groove in the respectivecog wheel and its other end being connected with an operating lever 12, which passes throughthe housing and is provided with a suitable handle whereby the same'may be moved'longitudinally to rock the bell crank lever to shift the cog wheel into and out of operative position.
1 It will thusbe seen that by operating a certain lever any desired cog wheel may be thrown into engagement with its rack to operate the desired pump by a single handle. In this way the apparatus may be made to deliver difi'erent kinds of oils or it may be used for delivering both oils and gasolene.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising a housing, a'plurality of pumps therein, a shaft in said housing normally dis-- connected from all the pumps, means for rotating the shaft and means for connecting said shaftwith any desiredpump.
2. An apparatus of the class described comprising a housing, aplurality of pumps therein, racks connected with the plunger rods of the pumps, a shaft journaled in said housing, a handle for rotating the shaft, cog wheels slidablymounted on the shaft and I means for moving any desired wheel into enhousing, a handle for rotating the shaft, cog
wheels slidably mounted on the shaft and f levers for moving the cog wheels into en- .gagement with the racks.
In" testimony whereof I afiix my signature. JAMES BOGAN BELK.
flopiel of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the commissioner of Patents.
