Aplilieation file'd December 27,1916. Serial No. 1391,1188.
the it known that "I, BERNARD .U, lforrrrnn, a citizen 01 the United States, residing at l-lolyoke, county of Hampden, and State :et 'Massachusetts, have invented icertaln new and useful improvements in Multiple lPiston or Bucket Pumps, fully (1650111386.
and represented in the following specification andthe accompanying drawings, forming a part oi the same. a i
This invention relates to that class of pumps used especially tor deep well pumping in which a plurality of reciprocating buckets orplungers act on theliquid suc' cessively, and each bucket rod passes through the bucket rods of the buckets above it, In these constructions differential plunger actions have been set up due to the fact that each bucket rod is increased in size in order to contain the bucket rods of the buckets below it, and thereby each bucket above the bottom bucket has been decreased in capacity to such an extent that they have necessarily discharged unequal quantities of the fluid pumped. The object of the present invention is to overcome this dilierential plunger action and to provide an improved power pump of this class in which the discharge t'rorn each bucket shall be the same without diminishing the total volume handled by the pump,
lln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, a triple acting deep well pump embodying the invention in its preferred form is shown, and this construction will now be described in detail and the features forming the invention then specilically pointed out in the claims.
lln the drawings:-
15 igure 1 is a front view of the pump with the pump head in elevation and the pump well in section,
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic view showing the arrangement of the crank head pins in respect to the center line of the crank shaft.
Referring to the drawings the frame 10 oi the pump head is mounted above the well 11, and carries the crank shaft 12, shown as driven by gear 13 from power shaft ll and pinion 15. The crank shaft 12 carries three separate cranks for operating the buckets, these cranks being set 120 degrees apart, and connected to the respective buckets as follower-The middle crank 16 :isiconnectedibyzits zcrank rod 17 landsliding crosshead .18directly: .to .bncketrrod .19 noonnected ito nbottom e1- :outer :sbucket 0. and yoke 32 to which is attached the tubular bucket rod 33 which carries the top or inner bucket The *rod133,with the inclose'd concentric rods 26 and 19, moves through the discharge head 35 at the top of the drop tube 36 within the well, a suitable stufling box 37 being provided and the discharge head 35 having a delivery pipe 38. The pump as thus far described is that of United States Letters Patent No. 1,102,583, dated July 7, 191 1, but it will be understood that this pump is shown only for illustration, and that the present invention is applicable also to multiple piston or bucket pumps of other types.
The present invention relates to the increasing or decreasing of the bucket strokes to thereby increase or decrease the dis charge of each individual bucket, so that all the buckets shall carry and discharge an equal quantity of fluid. This is done by varying the stroke so as to compensate for the space occupied by the bucket rods for the different buckets.
In the pump illustrated this is aceonn plished by making the cranks of such length as to give the several working rods and buckets different lengths of strokes.
Referring to Fig, 2, which is a diagrame matic view 01 the location of the crank pins with regard to the center 12 of the crank shaft, the crank pins 21 of the intermediate bucket are so placed with regard to the crank shaft center as to give the required nominal length stroke. Because of the in creased size of the largest bucket rod 33,
the length of the bucket stroke of the upper bucket is increased by increasing the crank length, the crank pins 28' being farther away from the crank shaft center and, as the bucket rod 17 of the lower bucket is smaller than the other bucket rods the crank of the lower bucket 20 is shorter, its pin 16' being nearer the crank shaft center, so as to give a shorter stroke, such as to carry and deliver the same amount of fluid as bucket 27. The delivery of the pump is the same, therefore, as in present pumps having the same nominal stroke.
The preferable application of the invention to pumps having a larger or smaller number of buckets is as follows:-In a two bucket pump the stroke of the bottom bucket preferably will be decreased below nominal and the upper bucket increased above the nominal. In a'four-bucket pump, the stroke of the'tvvo lower buckets preferably Will be decreased below and the stroke of the two upper buckets increased above the nominal.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to a vertical pump nor to the form. of actuating mechanism shown, but that it is applicable generally in multiple piston or bucket pumps, as defined by the claims. 1 I

What I claim is:
1. A. pump having a plurality of buckets 25 or plungers arranged in line with the bucket rods of the outer buckets passing through the bucket rods of the inner buckets, and means for actuating the inner buckets with a longer stroke than the outer 30 buckets to compensate for the decrease in capacity due to the increased size of the bucket rods of the inner buckets.
2. A pump having a plurality of buckets or plungers arranged in line with the bucket 1 rods of the outer buckets passing through the bucket rods of the inner buckets, and cranks and connections for operating the buckets, the cranks for the successive buckets being increased in length from the outer set my hand.
