Inventor Rafa/mien JOSHUA B. DETVVEILER, OF G-OSHEN, INDIANA.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 7, 1919.
Application filed June 24, 1919. Serial No. 306,298.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSHUA B. DETWEILJJR,
a citizen of the United States, residin at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and tate of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the piece of metal or other preferred material suitably cut and painted to simulate the apart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to figure toys, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved figure toy mounted upon a wheeled base, so constructed that upon movement of the base the figure will be actuated to cause certain movements.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved wheeled figure toy including a base having a figure mounted thereon to simulate the appearance of a mule, horse or other quadruped, such figure being operatively connected with the wheels in such manner that upon movement of the device the figure will be actuated so as to elevate the rear portion of the body thereof and lift the legs rearwardly and thus give the appearance of the figure kicking in a life- 'like manner.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved wheeled figure toy of the above character, which is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved toy,
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wh erein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved toy, which includes a flat substantially rectangular base plate, 2 having pairs brackets 3 and. 4. secured to the more fully described.
lower surface thereof adjacent its forward and rear ends. The forward bearing brackets 3 rotatably support the crankshaft 5 having the forward supporting-"wheels 6 rigidly secured thereto. The rear axle 7 carrying the rear supporting wheels 8 is journaled in the rear bearing brackets 4.
Mounted upon the upper surface of the base plate 2 is a figure 9 formed ofa flat pearance of a mule, horse or the like; The figure 9 includes the body 10, the neck 11, head 12, the forward legs 13, and the rear legs 14, which are formed from separate pieces of material as will be hereinafter A pivot pin 15 extends through the feet portions of the forward legs 11 and the terminals of the pin are bent downwardly as at 16 and secured to the base plate 2. The pin 15 forms a simple method for pivotally securing the figure 9 to the base plate.
The rear legs 14 are formed from a single piece of material suit-ably cut and painted and the same are pivotally secured to the rear lower end of the body by a rivet 17. The rivet extends through the upper portion of the legs 14 and is spaced from the upper edge thereof and the forward upper ends of the legs are continued above the pivot pin for a short distance. The feet portions of the rear legs are adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the base plate.
The forward end of the base plate is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 18, through which extends the rod 19, which has its lower end-curved to form an eye 19, which receives the crank portion of the shaft 5. The upper end of the rod 19 is bent and passed through an aperture 20 in the lower end of the head 12 of the figure. Thus, when the toy is wheeled over the ground, the figure will be swung on the pivot pin 15.
The extreme upper end of the rear leg 14 is pivotally connected to the rod 21, which has its lower end bent to form an eye 22, which receives the staple 23 which is secured to the base plate forwardly of the rear leg. Thus, when the figure is SWUIlg on the legs swung assume. :9 whieh will lOWer ends of the legs rearWardly and in this manner the figure will efi'eetively simulate 7' above description. as the preferred embodi ment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet
realizingth'e conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device Will necessarily vary, I deslre .to emphasize" that various n'nnor changes 1n details of construction, proportion' and arrangement of parts may be re- 7 sorted to, whenre mred'w1thout sacrificing 15 any of the advantages of my invention as Whatfl claim as n w is} 1; A gure toy of the class eluding 'a-Ibasepl'ate, forward and rearaxles a crank arm formed therein, a figure 1nclu'din'g 'a body, head forwar'd and rear legs,
the foryvard'legs being rigidly secured to the bOdy;;-aIid means pivot'ally securing the rear legs to the body, means operatiyely 'connect- I ing thecrank' arm Withthe forward end of the figure,.ine'ans" pivotally securing the lower teiminals of the forward legs to the base plate, and means connecting the for- ,Ward upper ends of the rear legs to the base mounted upon the base plate and including forward legs rigidly secured thereto, rear legs pi'votally secured thereto, a U-shaped pivot pin extending through the lower terminals of the forward legs and havingthe ternilnals of lts arms secured to the base plate, said base plate having a longitudinally extending slot formed therein, a connecting f rod pivotallyf secured to the crank and to the described inlower end of the head of the figure, and a rod havingits lower end secured to, the base carried by' the base plate, Wheels rigidly se- I cur'edtothe'axlesflhe'forward axle having plate and its upper end secured to the rear legs at'a point in'a'dvance of and above the pivot pin of the rear legs, as andfor the I purpose specified.
testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of tvv'o Witnesses, g V 7 y JOSHUA B. DETWVEILER'. Witnesses MELVIN D. DETWEILER, C. EDWIN STAUB.
