v W, BARTO TOY FLY KILLER Filed April 29, 1925 ,-7 /fyj /f PL ATroRN Y Patented Aug. 24, 1926.
UNITED" STATES WARD BARTO, OF CEDAR RAIDS, NEBRASKA.
riov FLY KILLER.
Application filed April 29, 1925.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a toy fly killer that is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction while highly efficient in operation and is B calculated to insure the destruction of a large number of flies inasmuch as its `use simulates the use of a pistol and will therefore afford amusement to a child.`
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a` side elevation of the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sec tion of the same.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the fly killer.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel device comprises a bodv which is formed by pref- 25 erence of wood in two pieces and comprises a stock or barrel portion 1 and a handle portion 2 so as to simulate in general appearance a pistol. The upper forward portion ofthe handle 2 is recessed as designated by 30 3, and the said recess 3 is arranged in communication with a chamber 4 formed in the portion 1 and between the same and the portion 2 and also formed in part by a metallic casing portion 5 which is fixed at 6 to the wooden portions 1 and 2 and serves to fixedly connect the said portions 1 and 2 together.
Pivotally mounted at 7 in the chamber 4 is a lever 8 designed to serve as a sear or keeper. The said lever 8 is of right angle form and its upright arm terminates in a reduced portion 9 which is designed to normally rest in a slot 10 at the upper end of the chamber 4. Pivoted at 11 in the chamber 4 is a trigger 12 with a pendent finger portion and with an upper arm 13 adapted to rest under the horizontal arm of the lever 8 as shown in Figure 2.
In addition to the elements named the killer comprises an elastic strip 14, and a flap' 15, preferably of leather which is con nected at 16 to the strip 14 and is provided with an eyelet 16 which extends through the strip 14 as well as the flap 15 and assists in the strong connection of the said elements Serial No. 26,775.
together. The forward end of the strip 14 is arranged in a groove 18 in the underside of the body portion 1, and the said strip portion is reinforced by the leather strip 19 through which pass attaching screws l2G. In this way it would be appreciated that the elastic strip 14 is strongly connected to the body portion 1 without liability of the strip 14 being worn because of its elastic character at the points of connection. The said strip 14 is designed to be arranged as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 incident to the setting of the device, the strip 14 atthat time being stretched or eX- panded so as to put it under strong tension and theeyelet 16 being engaged with the reduced end 9 of the lever Sso that said lever 8 serves to keep or retain the strip 14 in its tensioned state.
Manifestly with the device set as described it is simply necessary for the child or other person using the device to hold the same in proper position relative to a fly to be killed, and then pull the trigger 12 since when this is done the lever 8 will be rocked to disengage its reduced end 9 from the eyelet 16 whereupon the strip 14 will spring quickly forward and downward and by its tendency to resume its normal contracted state will forcibly throw the flap 15 forwardly and down against the fly with the result that the fly will be effectively destroyed.
To set the device it is simply necessary to stretch the strip 14 so as to place the same under tension and then engage the eyelet 16 over the reduced end 9 of the lever 8, the upright arm of the lever 8 at that time bearing against the rear end 30 of the body portion 1 so that the elasticity of the strip 14 will retain it in engagement with the lever 8 until the lever S is rocked as before described to swing its upright arm rearwardly and downwardly.
The body of my novel device including the casing 5 is preferably colored green, experience having demonstrated that a green colored device attracts the attention of a fly less than a device of any other color.
It will also be appreciated from the foregoing that because of the resemblance of my novel device in appearance and action to a pistol, the device will hold the attention of a child and will afford amusement to a child so that the child furnished with the device may be depended upon to assiduously swat or killflies.
I have specifically described the preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart an exact understanding of said em.- bodiment in all of its details. I do not desire, however, to be understood as conining` myself to the specic disclosure herein, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which structural changes may be made without departure from my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire. to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A. iy killing device comprising a body having 'a chamber, a trigger connected to said body, a lever movable by said trigger in said chamber and having a right Vangled vshaped arm withan upright portion adapted to bear forwardly against the body and to extend upwardly beyond theI upper side of the body, and an elastic strip connected to the forward portion of the underside of the body and adapted to be stretched under tension longitudinally at the upper side of the body and equipped with a flap and also equipped With an aperture to receive the upper end of the upright arm of the lever.
2. A liy killer simulating in general appearance a pistol and comprising'body sections of Wood and a casing connecting said body sections and forming therewith a chamber with an opening adjacent to the rear end and at the upper side of the body, a trigger mounted in the body, a right angled formed lever also mounted in the body adjacent the juncture of its right angled portion and having an upright portion adapted to bear forwardly against a portion of' the body and to extend above the upper side of the body, an elastic stripy connected at' its forward end to the underside of the forward portion ofthe body and adapted to be stretched over the forward end of the body and tensioned longitudinally at the upper side'of the body, a flap connected to the rear portion of said elastic strip7 and an e'yeletV assisting in the connection of the strip and flapl and adapted to receive and be detachably held by the upright arm ofthe sear.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
VARD BARTO.
