' the top 2 of which is provided with an open- 'Tra PHONOGRAPH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed` November 28, 1917. Serial No. 204,361.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that IVALEXANDER lViNSLow,
useful Improvements in Phonographs, of
-which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to phonographs Iand the invention has for its object to provide an improved table type ot' phonograph wherein a phonograph mechanism is received by the table and when desired, can be moved from its operative position, thus giving the article of furniture the appearance of an ordinary table.
, Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned in which the phonograph mechanism is rigidly supported when in operative position, thus proventingyibration and the resultant interference with the properl functioning of the sound reproducing means.
Other objects will be in part obvious and iii part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangement and combination ot' parts of Athe device, as well in the details ot the -construetion of the saine, all ot which will ,be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended -to the specification and which torni an essential part otl the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device, and
Fig.2 is a top plan of the saine` with the cover open.
Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like i reference characters will designate corresponding parts in the several views, the nii- -mei-al 1 represents the table in its entirety,
ing havingthe sides thereof rabbeted as at 3', whereby a hinged closure 4 may be re- ,ceived over the same, at times.
An opening 5 is formed in one end ot the ytable 1 and if desired, may be covered by suitable scroll or other ornamental design. Communicating with `the oiiening is the Outer end 0f a meg phone or phonograph horn 6, the same being preferably Jformed of Wood and supported upon'the under side of the table top through the medium of a bracket 0r support 7. 1n this connection, it is to be noted that the fixed 0r inner end of the mcgaphoiie (3 is provided with a resilient packing 8, such as felt washers or the like.
Oppositely disposed supporting bars 9 are secured to the under side of the table top 2 at points adjacent the sides of the opening therein, one of the said bars serving as means for permitting the securing of spring tension hinges 10 thereto, which hinges in turn, are engaged with the adjacent ends of' a phoii0- graph i'nechanisin supportingbo-.ird11. Slidably mounted on the opposite end ot the Vboard 11 is a spring pressed bolt 12, the free end of *which is adapted to be engaged in a recess or other suitable form of keeper 13 formed in the adjacent face of the cross is arranged on the board and is adapted to have they sound reproducing means 17 thereot' engaged with a. record arranged on the turn table 15. As will be noted, the Jree end ot the toile arm extends through and below the supporting board l1 and has suitable packing 18 arranged upon its outer end, similar to the packing 8. By reason of the positioning ot the outer end 0i the tone arm 1li, the same will alilie with the inner or constricted end ot the megaphone 6, at times, llllllly, WllGll the plimmgiapli meelianisii'i is arranged in its opposite position. Obviously, due to the en gagen'ient of the, packing 8. and 18, an efficient jointure between the tone arm 16 and the niegaphone (i will be effec-ted, thereby eliminating vibration and permitting proper functioning ot' the sound reproducing means 17. Further, due to the fact that the supporting board 1l is provided with spring tension hinges 10` vibration due to rattling ot the board will be prevented. Further. the board will be positiif'elyloeked when in its raised or operative position, due to the engagement'. 0i the spring pressed slidable bolt 12 with'thc keeper 13 formed in the cross arm 9.
Arranged 'upon the under side of the hinged-closure 4 isa trip arm 19, the saine being so positioned as to engage the inner or handle portion ot' the slidable bolt 12 upon the closing of the saine. r1`hus, will be rammed cees, reife;
readily understood that to move the phonograph mechanism together with its supporting board l1 to iiwperative position, it is only necesi-ary to move the closure l t'rom open position inwardly, whereupon the arm 19 will engage the handle portion of the bolt l2, thereby disengag'ing the same from the keeper 13 and allowing the supporting board 1l to be moved downwardly into its inoperative position. The table 1 has a cross piece B which is conventional with ordinary table structures and this piece serves as a stop and rest tor the lower extremity of the tone arm 1G when the supporting' board is in lowered position thereby limitingv the lowering movement of said board.
To maintain the closure -fl in lower position a bolt l0 is slidably mounted in the table top 2 and is adapted to be engaged with a'keeper formed in the free end ot' said closure.
-From the foregoing, it will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that I have provided an exceedinglyA simple and el'licient table type of phonograph and further, a construction in which all vibration will be eliminated, thereby insuring); perfect functioning of the sound reproducing means ot' the phonograph mechanism, which it permitted, would coniict with the vibration 'of the reproducer diaphragm. Further, the use of carriages, `guides, 'railsor counter-balances is also eliminated.
Manilestly, l'he construction shown is capable ot' considerable modification and such modification as is Vwithin the scopeJ of my claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
l claim:-
l. Vln a table haring' an ,opening in its top, supportingr means hinL'ed to the table beneath said opening, phonograph mechanism on the supporting' means. a horn supported on the table and adapted to aline. with the tone arm ot said phonograph mechanism, at limes. and a closure tor the opening'.
2. ln a table havingt an opening: in its top, supporting' means hinged to the table beneath said opening'. phonograph mechanism carried by said supporting means. a horn means carried hy said closure engageable with said locking' means ttor releasing the same, and a horn rigidly secured to the table and adapted to aline with the tone arm ot said phonograph meelninism, at times.
i l, in a table haring an opening in its top7 a supportiin,r board hinged to the table beneath said opening, means for normally maintaining the hoard in raised position, phonograph mechanism includingl a tone arm haring a. laterally distended portion 'arranged on said supporting board, the outer end ot said tone arm being' n'ovided withv packing', a horn rigidly secured to the table` and having' packing' arrainejed upon its inner end adapted to aline with the adjacent end of the tone arm, at times, and a closure for said opening' having` its top surface arranged flush with the table, top` n a table lawinean opening' in its top, a supporting hoard hinged to the table beneath said opening, swing means tor normally maintaining said board in raised position, locking` means carried by said hoard and eneageable with the table, aelosure for said opening, means carried by said closure engageable with the locking' means tor releasingY the same, phonograph mechanism carried by said supporting board including a tone arm having a laterally extended portion` a horn rigidly secured to the table, said horn beingr adapted to aline with the laterally distended portion of the tone arm, at limes.
