UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 21, 1922.
Application filed February 19, 1919. Serial No. 277,982.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that GENKICHI YAMANOUCHI, subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 124 N akanocho, Yawata, Omorimachi, Ebara-gun, Tokyo Province, Japan,
has invented certain new and useful Im-- provements in Gramophones, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference generally to improvements in musical instruments and more particularly relates to improved gramophones.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above character wherein the supporting box or case is of an improved construction and is designed to house the operating parts when in active or inactive positions in addition to forming a cabinet for receiving and retaining records.
An additional object of this invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character wherein improved means is employed for mounting the tone arm and the sound reproducer within the box, the arrangement being such that the tone arm is received in a compartment in the intermediate section of the box when the latter arm may be ar;
is folded or else the tone ranged in an operative position above the record table when it is desired to operate the same.
More specific objects of this invention consists in the provision of a foldable amplifier or horn so designed that portions of the box form a part thereof; to provide an improved connection between the means for supporting the tone arm and the horn; and finally to provide means for fastening the sections of the box in a closed position so be rendered portable when not in use.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provisionof a device of the above mentioned character with a view to compactness and wherein the number of parts are comparatively few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efliciency high.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims f r part of this specification. v 0 mmg a he invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which F g. 1 represents a longitudinal vertical sectional new of the device when closed the dotted hnes indicating the'trumpet 01 horn when extended and the position assumed by the tone arm and sound reproducer when 1n an active position.
F'1g. 2 1s a top plan view of the invention with the cover plate removed, the amplifier or horn being shown in dotted lines to ind cate its position relative to the mouthpiece. i
F1g. 31s a fragmentary side elevational view showing the trumpet or horn extended, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the inventlon showing the horn extended.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to lndicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is provided a box which includes a lower section 1 designed to accommodate a drawer 2 for receiving records 3. Carried with the lower section is the intermediate sect-ion or compartment 4, the latter by a partiton 5 near one side and the one corner to form a relatively narrow compartment 6 and a large compartment 7 in which is ada ted to be nism not shown) for the machine. Projecting above the compartment 7 is a spindle 8 for the revolving record table 9, the latter being positioned within and forming a bottom for the top section 10 of the box and this top section is preferabl pivotally connected by hinges 11. to t e intermediate section so that it may be swung upwardly when desired but is normally retained in a closed position by a catch 12.
arranged driving mechavertical compart-' Cir slider 18 forming a support for the downwardly bent inner end 19 of the tone arm. This slider is arranged in guides 20 and 1s capable of having vertical movement withln the tube but is normally supported by a coiled spring 21 also arranged within the tube, the ends thereof bearing againstthe bottom of the lower section and the slider and is tensioned so as to maintain the slider in a raised position. By this arrangement it will be seen that when in a depressed position the tone arm will be arranged within the small horizontal compartment 6 1n the intermediate section 4: and beneath the record supporting table 9. When in th1s pos tion it is inactive and for convenience additional records (not shown) may be arranged on the supporting table. However when it is desired to start the machine the table 9 may be removed to permit of the automatic extension of the tone arm and sound reproducer and subsequently the table and, one record may be arranged in the proper position and the sound reproducer may coact with such record for the playing thereof.
As intimated, an improved amplifier or horn is provided and in reducing this feature of the invention to practice a cover plate 23 is provided and is hinged as at 24: to the top of the upper section. Membranes 25 are now employed and are hinged to each other and to the cover plate 23 and the top surface of the upper or top section 10 so as to form a foldable or collapsible horn. A mouth piece 26} is operably mounted inthe top of the top section while the flexible tube 27 forms an improved connection between this mouth piece and the stationary tube 17 in the compartment. The tube 27 may be of such length as to accommodate the necessary relative movement of the tone arm and amplifier, or, if preferred, it may be formed of rubber or equivalent elastic material afiording: the necessary relative movement of these parts.
When the parts are in inactive position such as shown in Fig. 1 the catch 12 is closed and the device may be readily transported by means of a handle 28 which is connected to the intermediate section 4:.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the invention is entirely unnecessary.
Likewise it is believed that the advantages of the invention are readily apparent.
It is also believed to be understood that various modifiations of structural details may be made so long as they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims.
Having thus full described the invention what is claimed an desired to be secured by Letters Patent is 1. The combination With a cabinet composed of a pluralit of sections, the upper of which is swinga le relative to the intermediate section, a compartment in the intermediate section, a record table rotatably and removably arranged above the intermediate section, a tone arm having a downwardly bent inner end, and a sound reproducer connected to the tone arm of a stationary tube arranged within the lowerand intermediate compartments for accommodating the downwardly bent end of the tone arm, a slider yieldingly mounted on the tube and coacting with the tube to support the tone arm so that the tone arm and reproducer may be arranged in the compartment in the intermediate section or else upon the removal of the table moved to a raised position so as to subsequently coact with the table.
2. An arrangement as claimed in claim 1 wherein a coiled spring is employed and is arranged in the tube so as to be tensioned against the slider to automatically raise the tone arm and sound reproducer upon the removal of the record table.
3. A device of the character described including in combination a cabinet composed of lower, intermediate and upper sections, the upper section being hinged with relation to the intermediate section, the intermediate section being provided with a tone arm receiving compartment, the three sections being provided with a vertical compartment, a tone arm having a downwardly bent inner end, a sound reproducer connected thereto, means within the vertical compartment for slidably and rotatably supporting the tone arm, resilient means coacting with the last mentioned means and tensioned to force the tone arm and sound reproducer upwardly, a record table removably mounted above the intermediate compartment for retaining the tone arm and reproducer in the small compartment in the intermediate section but removable to permit of the extension of the tone arm, a horn connected with the top of the top section, a mouth piece operably mounted in the top of the top section and coacting with the horn and a flexible tube between the mouth piece and the means for supporting the tone arm.
In testimony whereof he alllxes his signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GENKICHI YAMANOUGHI.
