To all whom z' may concern Be it known that I, HOWARD H. HILL, a citizen of Great Britain, and a resident of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Suspending Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device of novel construction which is adapted to be fitted into a brush head and by means of which the brush may be suspended from the rim of a vessel containing water or other liquid, into which the bristles are to be immersed. By thus suspending the brush, the bristles are relieved from the p function of partly sustaining the weight of the brush, which weight is apt to bend and permanently injure the same.

The drawing shows the invention applied to a paint brush, butit is equally applicable to brushes of other characters.

The brush head 1 having handle 2, and carrying the bristles 3, is encompassed by a ferrule 4 as usual.` I-Iead 1, is provided with a laterally opening bore, lined with a tubular casing constituting a bushing 5. Within this bushing is free to slide a suspending member consisting of a shank 6, and a head 7 mounted on the outer end of said shank, so that said head may be readily grasped. Shank 6 is made of resilient material and is doubled at its inner end to form a hook 8, which by bearing against the bushing, will frictionally sustain the suspending member in its advanced or retracted position. The bight of the hook is traversed by a pin 9, extending diametrically through the bushing, and placed at a suitable distance from the inner end thereof, said pin constituting a stop that is carried by the bushing and limits the play of the suspending member within the latter.

In practice, the suspending member is pulled out by means of its head 7, and projected over the rim 10` of the can or other receptacles into which the brush is to be steeped. When the brush is to be re-used, it is lifted oft' the can, and the suspending member is pushed into the head.

It will be seen that by my invention, neat and convenient means are furnished for suspending the brush, which means are readily operable, and do not in any manner interfere with the normal function of the brush. y

Moreover, by the construction described, the entire suspending device forms a whole which may be introduced into the brush head in an assembled condition, thus dispensing with the necessity of building up said device within said head. Finally, the bushing constitutes a smooth and firm bearing surface for the end of the hook 8, while the suspending member is being advanced or retracted. Through the action of the pin 9 'or its equivalent upon the hook 8 under an outward pulling force upon the shank 6, said hook 8 is arranged to be restored into proper frictional engagement with the inner surface of the bushing 5, if for any reason this should be necessary.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a tubular casing arranged to be transversely inserted into a brush and hav ing an axial length less than the transverse width of said brush, a suspending device comprising a shank engaging the inner surface of said tubular casing and a resilient member frictionally engaging the inner surface of said tubular casing, said suspending device being slidable out of said bushing and into the same and being entirely contained therein in its inner position, a head carried by said shank and located eXteriorly of the brush and arranged to arrest the inward movement of said suspending device, and a stop carried by said tubular casing whereby the outward movement of said suspending device is arrested.

2. The combination of a brush having a bore extending transversely into the same and terminating at an intermediate point therein, a bushing lining said bore, a suspending device comprising a shank and a resilient member frictionally engaging the inner surface of said bushing, said device being slidable out of said bushing and into the same and being entirely contained there# in in its inner position, a head carried by ysaid shank. and located exterorly of the brush and a stop carried ,by said bushing whereby the outward movement of said deviene is arrested, said resilient'member bei-ng arranged to be restored into proper rotional contact .with said bushing Aby the action of said stop under an outward pulling force upon said shank continued after the outward movement of the device has been arrested.
