My invention relates to a case for holding lipstick having means for projecting the lipstick for use and retracting it within the case for storage during nonuse.

Among the objects of my invention is to provide simple, manually operable means for the quick projection and retraction of the lipstick, said means including a band housed in the wall of the lipstick case, and such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.

While I have shown in the accompanying drawings preferred embodiments of my invention, yet I wish it understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.

One embodiment selected to illustrate my invention comprises a hollow body member ID having side walls I I and open at the top and bottom. Positioned and movable within said body member ID is a holding member or cup 20 adapted to hold lipstick 21 or the like.

Adjacent the lower portion of the body member I is a turnable member 40. The turnable member 40 is rotatably supported by oppositely disposed side walls I I. Said turnable member 40 extends through the wall of the body member Ill on one end, and may be directly manually operable from the exterior of the device by a manually operable member such as a wheel 24. Attached to the turnable member 40 at substantially its center is a drum of rubber, composition or other substantially non slip material.

A resilient member or band 46 is attached adjacent its upper end by a pin 68 to the outer side of the cup 20 and extends downwardly within one of the vacant spaces of the body member ID to the turnable member 40 where it is bent so that it engages the drum 51. The resilient member continues past the drum 51 and is bent to extend upwardly.

Cut into opposite portions of side walls ll are grooves or slots 80 and SI slightly larger in width at their outer or base portions 82 than the width of band 46. Each of slots 80 and 8| has opposite inwardly converging flanges 83 and 84 making 2 the inner portions 85 slightly smaller in width than the width of band 46.

The end 86 of band 46, which is above its attachment to cup 20 rides in slot 80, and that portion of the band adjacent its opposite end 81 rides in slot 8|.

When the member 24 is turned the turnable member 40 is also turned. When the member 24 is turned in one direction the turnable member 49 moves the drum 5'! which in turn moves the resilient member 46 so that the resilient member moves the cup 20 to substantially the top of the body member III for use. When the member 24 is turned in the opposite direction the turnable member 40 turns and moves the drum 5! which moves the resilient member 46 to pull the cup with its lipstick 21 back into the body member 10 for storage during nonuse.

A bottom closure 34 is preferably fitted by friction grip over the lower outer ends of the side walls ll of body member ID. A cap 28 is formed to fit over the open top of body member H] by friction grip on side walls II.

The bottom closure has a substantially centered portion for directing the resilient member against the drum 51 to facilitate the operation of the device.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

A lipstick device comprising a unitary cylindrical body member having walls, an open top, an open bottom and a hollow interior, a lipstick cup slidably positioned in said hollow interior, a turnable member rotatably mounted on the walls of said body member adjacent its lower portion and operable from the exterior of the device, a drum of substantially non-slip material attached to said turnable member, a resilient band having its upper end attached to said cup and extending downwardly and in frictional driving engagement with the lower side of said drum so as to be moved thereby, said walls of said hollow body member having a pair of oppositely disposed centrally located slots directly in line with the center of said drum, said slots at their outer portions being slightly larger than the width of said band, a portion of said band adjacent one end slidably positioned in one of said slots and a portion of said band adjacent the other end slidably positioned in the other of said slots, said slots each having a pair of integral opposite converging flanges, so that the distance between the inner edge of opposite flanges is less than the width of said band, so as to confine said band in said slots, prevent buckling of said band and insure direct and maximum contact of said band with the cen- 2,489,001 3 4 ter of said drum, a wheel for moving said turnable member, and in turn said band and said cup, REFERENCES CITED closures for closing the open top and the open The following references are of record in the bottom of said body member, and a raised portion file of this patent: in the center of said bottom closure for bearing 5 against said band and holding said hand against UNITED STATES PATENTS the center of said drum.
