UNITED STATES P ENT o FIoE.
WILLIAM s. HAMM, or HUBBARD WOODS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR To THE ADAMS &
' WESTLAKE 00., A CORPORATION or ILLINOIS.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. IVILLIAM SIIAMM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hubbard Woods, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Holders, of which the following is ai specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to holders for lamp chimneys, and is herein shown and is especially applicable to lamps known as longtime burners and commonly used for signaling purposes by railroads, as in connection with switches.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for holding the chimney; and it consists in a structure such as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a burner with the improved holder applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the burner with the chimney in place; and
Fig. 3 is a detail of one of the elements of the holder.
The burner shown in the drawings is of known construction, comprising a body portion 10 and a wick tube 11 provided at its upper end with a flame spreader 12. The usual gallery 13 is present, and it has the general form of a flat ring supported upon standards 14: rising from the body 10. Spring fingers, as 15, 16, project upwardly from the gallery 13 and impinge upon the chimney 1!.
The chimney is shown as having an annular channel 18 near its lower end, and the fingers 15, 16, are bent inwardly to form an elbow 19 for engaging in this channel. Preferably the spring fingers 15. 16, are formed in pairs of a single wire, the crossmember 20 uniting the two fingers being secured to the gallery 13 by means of an overturned lip 21 integral therewith. At the juncture of the cross-member 20 with each of the fingers 15, 16, the wire is coiled to the form of a helical spring, as 22, for urging the upper ends of the fingers toward the chimney. These helical springs project under and bear against the gallery, thereby preventing any turning movement of the cross-member 20 within the lip by which it is held. The upper end of each of the fingers Specification of Letters Patent.

is overturned outwardly to form a loop, as
shown at 23.
As thus far described the device presents no novel features, but is inefficient for holding the chimney in place when the lamp is su jected to any violent jars or movements,
vsuch as occur in connection with railway switches. It frequently happens in this service that the switch is thrown with a quick action, the operating lever being abruptly stopped at the completion of movement. A lamp mounted upon the switch staff is turned therewith, and the quick movement and its abrupt termination is liable to dislodge the chimney from the holding fingers described.
In order to prevent such displacement of the chimney a spring wire 24 is coiled to circular form, its end portions overlapping, and is threaded through the loops 23 of the several upstanding fingers. The ends of this wire are bent outwardly, as shown at 25, 26, to form grips or finger pieces which, when pressed together, expand the body of the wire ring 241. Normally this ring is urged by its own elasticity into the shoulders 19 of the upstanding fingers and consequently enters into the chimney channel 18. In order to insert the chimney the finger pieces 25, 26, are pinched together to expand the ring 24., and downward pressure of the chimney forces the upright fingers apart and permits its entry between them. The chimney being seated upon the gallery, pressure upon the fingers 25, 26, is relieved and the ring 241 fits snugly within the channel 18 and securely holds the chimney against any possible danger of displacement.
I claim as my invention-- 1. In combination, a lamp burner, an an nularly disposed series of fingers rising from the burner for inclosing a chimney, each having a shoulder adapted to enter an annular groove in the chimney, and a clamping ring surrounding the fingers andseated against the shouldered portions thereof and comprising an elastic band having its ends overlapped and bent outwardly lto form finger pieces.
2. In combination, a lamp burner, an annularly disposed series of fingers ri ,ing from the burner for inclosing a chimney, and having their upper ends formed into outstanding loops adapted to ente an annular groove in the chimney, a clamping ring of spring material carried within the gallery, a series of s rin fin ers rlsin from the talzler and b b each having an instanding shoulder adj acent its upper end adapted to enter an annular groove in the chimney, such end being overturned outwardly to form a loop, an elastic Wire clamping ring located Within the several'loops and having its ends overlapped and provided with finger pieces.
In combination, a burner having a chimney supporting gallery, a series of from the gallery and each having an insta-nding shoulder adjacent its upper end adapted to enter an annular groove in the chimney, such end bein'g overturned outwardly to form a loop,
spring fingers rising and an elastically contractible clamping ring located within the several loops.
5. In combination, a lamp burner, an annula'rly disposed series of fingers rising from the burner for inclosing a chimney and each having a shoulder adapted to engage an annular groove thereimand an elastically contractible ring surrounding the fingers.
