ALBERT J. D- OHM, OF NEW YORK, N. 55., ASSIGNOR T0 INCANDESCENT SUPPLY COM them IANY, A CORPORATION OI? NEW YO'BK.
HOLDER FOR GLOBES.
Application filed August 27. 1924 Serial No. 724,395.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. D. OHM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Globes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders for globes, especially for globes used in connection with electric lamps.
The object of my invention is to secure holding means that automatically adapt themselves to variations in the size of the globe to be held, are resilient so that they adapt themselves to expansion and contraction of the globe due to the changes in temperature thereof, provide effective locking means to prevent dislocation of the globe from jar or other accidental cause, and per mit ready removal of the globe only by a predetermined manual operation.
My invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings form ing a part of this specification, wherein there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size, shape and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a section of the globe holder and globe.
Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the globe holder.
Fig. 3 is a detail of the locking spring.
In the drawings, the globe holder 1, has a depending flange or apron 2, to which is attached an adjustable locking spring 3, fastened at 4. There are two or more U- shaped springs 5 attached to the apron by rivets or other fastening means 6, said springs being curved in at the ends to afford a slidable contact with the lip 10.
When it is desired to insert the globe 7 into the globe holder 1. the looking spring 3 is raised to uppermost position as indicated in Fig. 3 in solid lines. The spring 3 is checked in an intermediate upward position, by contact with the apron, as at 11, thereby preventing the spring from snapping against the globe and breaking the same.
The globe may then be inserted into the holder and the upper lip 8 thereof contactsmally hold the globe. Thus the globe cannot be removed or shaken loose unless the spring? heretofore described.
The locking spring? has an offset, as at 12, which permits adjustability between the looking spring 8 and the apron 2. This permits play of the spring, to adapt itself to expansion and contraction. of the globe, due to the change in temperature, as well as to take care of any variations in the outer diameter of the lip of the globe to be placed in the fixture, without the necessity of special adjustment of the holding means.
Should the globe receive a jar or blow that would cause the globe to move and if tightly held, as in present practice, it would tend to break at the points of contact, thereby falling, with consequent injury to persons thereunder. By my invention, thelocking spring 3 adapts itself to the globe with sufiicient play to prevent the breaking at the points of contact but when the globe is moved sufficiently so that there is danger of its falling, the abutment 12 of the spring 3 contacts with the apron 2, at 13, and by thus abutting against the inner surface of the apron offers severe resistence to the further downward. mbvement of the globe, thereby completely locking the globe 7 in the holder 1.
Having described my invention, what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A holder for globes comprising a body portion, spring supports within said body portion and a locking spring secured at one end within said body portion and with its other end free and projecting through a slot in said body portion, said free end of said spring having a configuration to provide a lip for supporting the globe, and a yoke to straddle the body portion adjacent said slot whereby said spring may be positively held in globe supporting position.
2. A holder for globes comprising a body portion, bow-shaped, volute-ended, centrally secured spring supports within said body is raised and the globe released as portion, and a locking spring, said locking spring being adapted to be alternatively moved into and out of globe engaging position.
' A holder for globes comprising a body portion, bow-shaped, yolute-ended, spaced apart spring supports Within said body portion, and a locking spring, said locking spring being adapted to be alternatively moved into and out of globe engaging posi. tion, and held engaged in an intermediate upwardposition and releasable means for positively holding said locking spring in globe engaging position.
i. A holder for globes comprising a body portion, spaced apart, spring globe supports, each comprising a flat strip of spring material, bent bow-shaped and ith vo lute ends and secured at substantially the center of one of its sides to said holder, and a looking spring, said locking spring being adapted to be alternatively moved into and out of globe engaging position,
5. A holder for globes comprising a body portion, apair of spaced apart, spring globe supports, each comprising a flat strip of. spring material, bent bow-shaped and With volute ends and secured at substantially the center of one of its sidesto said body portion, and a locking spring, said locking spring having one end secured to said body portion, the other end being free, said free end projecting through a slot in said holder and having a configuration to provide a lip to support the globe and a yoke to straddle said body portion adjacent said slot'whereby said locking spring may be positively held in globe engaging position and when so held forming with said spring supports a tripoolal globe suspending frame substantially unyielding to stresses in the direction of the axis of said body port-ion.
Signed at New York ,city in'the county of New York and State ofNeW York this 20th day of August, A. D. 192%.
