Description

.J. CHEIN.
TOY. APPLICATION FILED MAY 24. 1919.

TOY.
Application filed May 24, 1919. Serial No. 299,620.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS CHEIN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to improvements in toys and the object of my invention is to provide a simple, useful and convenient toy.
I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which, 7
Figure 1 is a view of the device assembled,
Fig. 2 is a view of the same with parts broken away,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section,
Fig. 4 is a view of the blank from which the receiver hook is formed,
Fig. 5 is a view of the receiver hook, and v Fig. 6 is a View of the hammer.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, 1 is a wall plate on which I preferably attach a representation of a transmitter 2. On the wall plate 1 I provide a box comprising two sides 3 and. 4:, a top 5 and a front 6. A bell 7 is suitably mounted on the outer face of the front 6.
In the box I provide a hammer 8 which is provided with a'hook section 9 projecting through the front 6 of the box and adapted to strike the bell'7. The front edge section of the hammer 8 is adapted to normally lie against the inner face of the front 6 of the box. On the rear of the hammer 8 I provide a bearing lug 11 which is seated in a slot 12 in the rear wall plate 1 and I prefer to press out a raised section 13 around the slot 12 to permit the bearing 11 to move freely. On the upper part ofthe lug 11 I provide a notch 14 to serve as a bearing when the hammer is raised and below the lug 11 I provide a shoulder 15. The hammer 8 is adapted to normally rest in the box with its striking end or hook 9 below and adjacent the bell 9 and is raised and caused to strike the bell 7 by means of a lever or receiver hook 16 which is fulcrumed in a slot in the side wall 3 of the box and has an end section 17 seated in a slot 18 in the hammer 8.
On the upper edge of the lever 16 I provide a lug 19 which serves, in conjunction with other parts to position the lever 16 and to limit its play, and on the under'edge of the lever 16 I provide a tooth 20 and a cut out notch 21. I provide a bifurcated spring 22 in the end section of the lever 16 by spreading the ends, to carry a'telephone receiver. The lug 19 and the wall 23 of the notch 21 are so positioned that when the end section 17 of the lever 16 is raised, the hook 9 of the hammer 8, which normally lies I closely adjacent to, but out of actual contact with the bell 7, will be caused to strike and sound the bell 7 and will then be restored by gravity to its normal position. The parts being thus assembled the depression of the outer end 22 of the lever 16 will raise its inner end section 17 thereby causing the book 9 of the hammer 8 to strike against and sound the bell 7. l V
I prefer to form the lever 16 of a sheet of metal as shown in Fig. 41 having a narrow end section 17 with straight sides and two legs 22 at its opposite end, with a shoulder 23 at one side and a tooth 20 at the other side with an intermediate cut-out section 19 which is rolled or folded over on the line engage the hammer, a notch in the under edge of the lever and a lug on the upper edge of the lever to limit the movement thereof- 2. In a toy, the combination of a box, a bell thereon, a hammer having a striking end normally positioned adjacent the bell and having a bearing lug seated in the rear wall of the box, a lever fulcrumed in the side of the box and adapted to engage the hammer, a notch in the under side of the lever and a lug on the upper edge of the lever to limit the movement thereof.
3. In a toy, the combination of a box, a bell thereon, a hammer and a lever adapted to engage the hammer, said lever being formed of sheet metal rolledever and having a notch on the under side of'thelevento its end sections spread to form a bifurcated form a bearing and arlug on the upper side 10 spring to earry a receiver. f the lever to limit, itsmovement- 5 bell thereon, a hammer, and a lever adapted Y. a'nd State of N. Y., this 15 day (if May,
to engage the hammer, said lever being; A. 1919. v
