' Be it known that I, FRANK Jonnenn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weingarten, in the county of Ste. Genevieve and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom-Corn Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved machine for cleaning broom corn by scraping the seeds therefrom, the object of the invention being to provide an improved machine of this kind which is simple in construction, is strong and durable, and is adapted to be operated manually.

The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a broom corn cleaner constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention and showing the bar in one position in full lines and in another position in dotted lines.

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

The base of my improved broom corn cleaner is here shown as a Wooden beam of suitable dimensions provided with supporting legs 2 and braces 3. The beam is provided with a pair of vertical longitudinal seed discharge 0 enings 4 near one end.

air of bars 8 are formed on the upper side of the base by iron or steel plates which are secured to the base and the upper, straight edges of which project above the base and extend thereon for a suitable length.

A bar 9 is provided which comprises apair of members 10, of iron or steel, and which are arranged in spaced relation and secured on opposite sides of a spacer member 11 by a bolt 12. The outer ends of the members 10 are connected together as at 13 and provided with an extension 1 1 to which a handle 15 is secured. The inner end of the bar is arranged between the standards 5 and is pivotally mounted between said standards, the

members 11 of the bar having -openings through which the horizontal arms 16 of an inverted T-shaped bolt 17 extend. The arms 16 of the bolt operate and are movable vertically in the slots 70f the standards and are provided at thelr. outer ends with nuts, 181" v downwardly thereon, the lower end of said sprlng bearing on the cross arms of the T-bolt and the upper end thereof bearing under the plate 20. Hence the inner, pivoted end of the bar is held yieldably in a depressed position'between the flange plates of the base.

A vertically arranged guide 23 is provided for the bar, said guide being secured to the base and engaging opposite sides of the extension 14 of the bar members. The free end of the bar may be raised and lowered by grasping the handle with one hand. The user of the cleaner first raises the bar, then places a bunch of broom corn, with the other hand across the flange plates 8, then closes the bar downwardly on the bunch of broom corn so that the latter is compressed to some extent between the flange plates and the spaced members of the bar and he then draws the broom corn longitudinally so that as it passes between the flange plates and the bar members all the seeds thereon are effectually cleaned and scraped therefrom and dropped through the openings 1. The inner end of the bar is yieldably pivotally mounted so that the bar may readily accommodate itself to the broom corn and avoid injury to the broom corn.

While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim In a broom corn cleaner a base, standards on the base provided with vertical slots, a bar comprising spaced members arranged for movement toward and from the base, a

T-bolt on which the bar is pivoted at one end, the horizontal arm of the T-bolt being arranged for movement in the slots of the standards and the vertical armof the T-bolt extending upwardly above the bar, a guide plate having an opening through which the vertical arm of the T-holt extends, supports for the guide plate, and a spring on the ver- V tiea-l arm of the T-bolt and bearing downwardly thereagainst and also bearing under 10 the guide plate, said T-holt, standards, and spring permitting limited vertical movement of the pivoted end of said bar.
