SHOE-CLEANER.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OPHAS TOLBERT (harms and HARRY TAYLOR SMooT, citizens of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of food and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Cleaner, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to shoe cleaners and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of itsparts as hereinafter shown and described.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character indicated and which consists primarily of a metallic frame having an upright scraper and side recesses adapted to support brushes in inclined position. The said brushes are of a special configuration and are adapted to remove particles of dirt or other foreign matter from the edges of the sole of the shoe.

In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cleaner. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one of the brushes removed. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of one of the brushes, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sec tional view of a brush located in the brush holder.

The cleaner comprises the base 1 which is preferably rectangular in shape and which may be secured to a floor or other suitable support. At the back of the base 1 is located the vertically disposed scraper 3 and the arms 4, 4 extend up from the upper corners of the said scraper. The side pieces 5, 5 incline down from the upper ends of the arms 4, 4 toward the forward portion of the frame 1 and terminate in the vertical portions 6, 6 which connect at their lower ends with the base 1 at the forward edge thereof. The sides 5, 5 are provided with the backs 7, 7. In the space between the arms 4, sides 5, portions 6 and backs 7, the brushes 8 are adapted to rest. The said brushes are elongated and are provided at their lower ends with the rectangular portions 9 which form bases for the brushes. The said brushes are held in place by screws 10 which pass transversely through the parts l and 6 and enter the back of the brush. The bristles 11 located at one end of the brush are of uniform length and are of the same length as the bristles that surround the edge of the inclined portion 12 of the brush. Along the said inclined portion 12 the bristles gradually increasein length toward the center of the portion 12 which gives a conveXed appearance to the arrangement of the bristles.

In use the scraper 3 may be employed for removing excessive mud from the shoe and by drawing the foot along the inclined brushes 8 the sides thereof are cleaned while the bristles upon the portion 9 of the brush cleans the heel of the shoe. By reason of the variance in length of the bristles upon the portion 12 of the brushes means is afforded for entering the crevice between the sole of the shoe and the upper and for removing foreign matter therefrom.

Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is A shoe cleaner comprising a base having at one end a shoe scraper, a pair of brush holders supported at one end of the base and at the other end upon the scraper, whereby to maintain them in an inclined position, the brushes secured in the holders, the opposed faces of the brush backs being oppositely beveled whereby to cause portions of the brushes to lie close to the base.
