T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SPENoEn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating-Fixtures, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
This invention relates to devices for illuminating definite predetermined areas and has for its primary object to provide an improved reflector construction and an improved lamp and reflector arrangement. According to my invention, a plurality of line-source incandescent lamps are arranged end to end about a center or axis to provide a frame of incandesccnce which by means of a correspondingly formed reflector is projected inwardly from all directions onto a relatively small illuminated area. When this device is used in connection with operating tables or for like purposes, only a small portion of the total light flux may be intercepted by a surgeon who leans over the table in a position to cast a shadow. Thus a given mount of current is made to produce a light ring of wide extent while the reflector concentrates the light flux therefrom onto a relatively small area to be illuminated. Specific objects of the invention will appear in the specification and claims, reference being had to the drawings which show the preferred embodiment of my invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in the present embodiment of my invention, the depending pipe 1 carries at its lower ends radially arranged branches or pipes 2 through one of which extends positive and negative wires 3 which carry the current for 1lluminating a plurality of line source lamps 4 arranged end to end about a center or axis which, in the present embodiment, is the axis of the depending pipe 1. In this arrangement, the lamps 4: constitute sections of a ring or polygon of lamps, the terminals of said lamps being mounted in sockets 5 arranged within a polygonal reflector comprising sections 6. The trans verse cross section of each of said sections 6 is shown in Fig. 2 and comprises a flat vertical wall 7 with which connects one of the pipe sections 2, a flat top wall 8 and an outer curved wall 9. One of the lamps t is shown in Fig. 3 comprising a cylindrical tube of glass incasing a line filament 10 provided with terminals 11 which fit the lamp sockets 5. According to Fig. 2, an operating table 12 surmounts a plurality of screws 13 which may be adjusted in legs 14 mounted on rollers or casters 15. An inspection of Fig- 2 will show that the light flux from each section of the reflector is projected upon a predetermined area to be illuminated. Furthermore, the light flux from all of said sections is thrown upon one and the same area from sources which are more distant from the axis of the illuminated area than the edges of said area. An operating table 12 may be raised or lowered until said illuminated area covers any desired portion of its surface. I claim:
1. The combination with a reflector comprising sections symmetricallydisposed with respect to a common axis and arranged end to end to form a closed frame extending around said axis, each of said reflector sections comprising a concave surface of relatively greater area presented inwardly toward said axis and a relatively smaller surface presented outwardly toward said concave surface, of light source means distrib' uted substantially throughout the perimetral length of said frame and between said surfaces.
2. The combination with a reflector comprising sections symmetrically disposed with respect to a common axis and arranged end to end to form a closed frame extending around said axis, each of said reflector sections comprising a concave surface of relatively greater area presented inwardly toward said axis and a relatively smaller surface presented outwardly toward said concave surface, of light source means distributed substantially throughout the perimetral length of said frame and between said surfaces, the lower portions of said inwardly presented concave surfaces being suitably formed to adapt said concave surfaces to combine the light flux from all of said sections on a common area to be illuminated and said outwardly presented surfaces being adapted to limit the direct rays from said light source with respect to said area.
3. The combination with a reflector comprising flat vertical walls joined at their ends to form an inner polygonal frame, an annular top wall projecting outwardly from the upper edge of said polygonal frame, and
an outer frame comprlsing sections depending from the outer edge of said annular top Wall and having their endsjoined, said sections being provided with inwardly presented concave reflecting surfaces adapted to project the light rays from all of said sections on to a common illuminated area, of a line source lamp extending substantially the entire length of each section and arranged above the lower edge of said frame.
