Specification of Letters Patent.
application lileil October 22, 1918. Serial No. $359,273.
To all unto/n it may concern:
lie it known that I, Tnonen'r L. Rienann- SON, a citizen of the United States,. and a resident of Brock, in the county otNemaha and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and improved Screen, Curtain. or like Article, of which the-following is a description.
My invention while more particularly designed for use in connection with a curtain or screen is adapted for use in any structure having a window or opening; adapted to be closed shaded, or screened by sheet mate rial: For the purpose of illustration, I have shown my invention in connection with a' window screen; The invention particularly relates to a screen, curtain or the like adapt ed to he wound on a spring" roller or no wound therefrom.
The general object of the invention is to provide a novel means for maintaining the screen, curtain, or the like in flat form.
Other objects of the invention and its all-- vantages will appear as the dcsrri iition proceeds.
l tetercncc is to be had to the acronipalvvinn drawing-s forming a part of this specification, it beingunderstod that the draw inns are merely illustrative. of one example of the invention.
Figure .1 is a trout elevation of a window frame and screen having my invention enlbodied therein;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the upper portion of the structure as indicated by the. line 2-:2, Fig. 1;
Fig. is an enlarged cross section as indicated by the lines 3-}; in l igs. l and (3;
Fig. 4- is a detail in Vertical section on an enlarged scale, the view being taken on the line 4--4, Fig. l;
Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section on the line -!i. Fig. (31' Fig. (3 is a vertical section at right angles to Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is a. detail in transverse vertical section given to show locking means associated with the lower roller shal't ol the actuating chain of the curtain for the screen orthc like.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary horizontal lil lr tinn taken through the lower har attached to the screen.
'lhe l'raine in connection with which in r improved screen. curtain. or the like is to be employed, is shown in the form of a metal window frame 10 having stiles ll. A screen 12 or other suitable sheet material is secured at its upper end to a spring roller 13 mount ed to turn in bearings l-il. within a housing 1 lforming, part of the frame 10.
The sheet material 12 extends from the roller 13 downwzn-dly through a slot 15 in the bottom oi" the top rail 16 of the frame and said sheet at the side edges extends through vertical slots 17 in. the inner walls 11 ot' the stiles ll. Along the side edges of the sheet material 12 within the hollow stiles 11. said sheet has applied thereto flexible strips 18 of metal or equivalent material, and said strips are formed each with a vertical series of holes 19 to receive correspond ingly spaced pins 20 extending from the outer side of a chain 21. here shown as an endless chain running: over upper and lower rollers on shafts 23 turning in hearings in brackets '39. 30. The chain made of flat links and the hinges are at the inside and adapted to engage in notches 25 in the rollers 22. The links oi the chain 21 and hinges thcreo't at one side edge oi the chain runs adjacent to the inner walls 11 and at. the opposite sides the links and the strips 18 are overlapped by a guard plate 27 having a flange whereby the strips 1 are prevented 't'rom being laterally disengaged from the chain pins 20 and said strips and the links are prevented from working outwardly through the slots 17. A flap or packing strip 15 may he provided at the slot 15 to exclude flies and other insects.
To the lower edge of the sheet 12, a strip or bar 32 is sewn-ed and formed in sections adapted to clamp the sheet tlna'ehetween. The rear section 32'' ot the strip has its -Front wall extended at the ends forming project- .ingg' flanges 32" which have holes 32 to receivepins 20 ot' the chains The. front section 32 has a downwardly extending Flange 532 to overlap the sill 33 ot' the Window frame 10 or like structln'e. and the arrangement is such that the said flange 32" will overlap and form a closure at the bottom of the seri-ein or the like, between the same and the window, even though the screen is not brought to its extreme lowermost position.
'lhe sprin g roller l3 tends to wind up the sheet l. and in ord r to hold the sheet material l'roln being raised, locking- IIIHUIS l OI' the lower shalt if is provided in the l'orln of a ratchet wheel Set and a gravity pawl Patented July a, 19W.
ratchet '34-, the spring roller roll the sheet mateitial l2. 'm'al'may be lowered by taking hold of the pivoted at one end as at 36 Within a stile 11-.
liottom "oar 32. In the raising and lowering of the sheet material, the engagement of the pins QO-Witli the strips 18 causes the chain to turn, so that the pins may release themselves from, the strips 18 as the pins pass about the upper roller 22. Thebar 32 will always be engaged with its 3ins'20 to maintain the connection between the chain and the screen or the; like on Whioh the bar 22 is attached. Thus the strips 38 will be maintained substantlally flat against the adjacent face of the chain, the engagement of the pins and 2a the contact with the chain preventing any buckling of the sheet material At the same time.v the screen or the like may be readily raised or lowered and will be firinly held in the adjusted position by the pawl 05 and '25 ratchet 34.
I would statc in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
.35 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A Lame presenting stiles, a roller mounted at the upper portion of said frame,
ana ass sheet material connected with said roller, means at the side edges of said sheet material presenting holes, chains in said stiles, pins on said chains adapted to engage in said holes, wheels over which said chains run, and means to hold the chains and sheet material. from movement.
2. A, frame presenting stiles, a spring roller mounted at the upper portion in said frame, sheet material secured to said roller to Wind thereon or to unwind, said stiles liai-ing vertical slots 'tl'irough which the sheetmaterial extends, upper and lower wheels in said stiles, an. endless chain extending about said wheels, pins on the chain, strips on the side edges of the sheet material and presenting holes adapted to receive said pins, a ratchet turning with the lower Wheel, and a pawl engaging said ratchet and extending to the exterior of the frame, whereby to release the ratchet and permit the spring roller to raise the sheet material.
3. A frame presenting; stil s, a spring roller mounted at tlic upper portion of said frame, sheet material secured to said roller to ind thereon or to unwind, a bar carried by said shcct niaiicrial at its lower edge, said har presenting a depending flange adapted to ovcrlap tl-n shcct material is lowered, end flanges on said bar extending into the said stiles, endless chains in said stiles, pins on the chains engaging the last mentioned flanges, wheels ovcr which said chains run, and means asso- ('iai'cd with the lower wheel to prevent turning of the latter or to release the whceL 'lTlCLB Elll L.
