` THOMAS J. BURNS, OF icHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW SCREEN.
Application filed August 24, 1925. Serial No. 52,015.
This invention relates toa screen closure for windows and other openings, the general object of the invention being to place the screen on a spring roller so that it can be raised and lowered like a window shade, with means for guidng the edges of the screen in the walls of theopening and for causing it to make a tight fit with the lower wall of the opening.
Another object of the invention ,is'to provide a casing for enclosingr the roller with an opening therein for providing access to the roller with a handle part on the bottom of the screen which is formed to close the opening when the screen is wound upon the roller.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing movement of the edges of the screen in the guiding means and to prevent rattling of the parts.
This invention also. consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to beV4 hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. l
In describing my inventionl in detail, reference willl be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation of a window frame showing the invention in use.7
Figure 2 is a section on line 2 -2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-'3 of Figure 1.
`Figure/1 is a perspective View of a portion of one edge of the screen showing one of the guiding members thereon.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 1. y
Figure 6 is a perspective view. of the lower corner of the screen.
Figure 7 is aV perspective View of a portion of the spring pressed strip. v
Figure 8 is a section on line 8-8 of Figure 6. M
In these views, 1 indicates a spiingroller which is of the type used in supporting window shades. yThis roller has its pintles engasing openings in a casing 2 so that the roller is supported by the casing and said casing is fastened to the top part of the window framev A or other structure, theopening in which is. to be screened. lThe screen 3 has its upper end fastened to the 1 roller, as shown at 4, and a strip 5 of iiexiblc metal is connected with eachside edge of the screen so as lto reinforce the same and keep the screen from bending or getting out of shape. `A guideway is arranged at each side of the opening for receiving the side edges of the screen and each guideway is composed of two members 6 and 7 which are suitably fastened to the'side walls of the opening and the member 7 of which has an offset portion which provides a chamber 8 in whicli` is arranged an L-shaped strip 9 which is provided with the springs 10 which act to press the strip outwardly or towards the base of the guideway. T-shaped guiding members 11 are fastened to the side strips 5 and engage the guideways and the small flange of the L-shaped strip engages the heads of these members, as shown in Figure 3. Similar shaped guidingl members 12 are arranged at the lower corners of the screen, but these members are made much larger than the members 11, and they are also engaged by the strips 9. These members 12 also carry sprinvs 13 for engaging the bottoms ofthe guieways'. A' handle member B is connected with the bottom of the screen and is composed of the flanged base part 14 and the flanged channel-shaped part 15 their lower edges, withthe looped part projecting so as to engage the window sill and make :a tight joint when the screen is in lowered position. yThe ends of each lmember 12 also pass between the end portions of the parts 14'and ,15. The casing 2 is provided with a large opening 2 which will be closed by the basev part ,lltwhen the screen is in raised position. 'This opening 2 is large enough to provide access to the spring roller and to permit the roller to be inserted and withdrawn, as desired. The spring pressed strips 9, acting on the. guiding'members 11 and 12, as shown in Figure 3, will prevent rattling of the parts and will prevent the looping or slackening of the screen in its movement. n
The lower endof each strip 5 is bent and passed through slots formed in the inner member l2 of the guiding member 12, as
shown at 5 in Figure 8.
have provided a screen which can be raised and lowered like a shade and which will make Aa tight connection with the Window when in lowered position through means of the guideways, the strips 5 and the. flexible strip 16 carried by the handle member. By placing the device at the outer side of a Window, as shown in Figure 2, it can remain in position, when not being used, as the screen can be rolled up in the casing and as the part 14 covers the opening in the casing, the screen and the parts thereof will be pro tected from the elements by the casing.
It is thought from the foregoing descripN tion that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.-
l desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What l claim is 1. A device of the class described including a screen member, a flexible strip, attached to one end of the screen member, a guide Within Which the strip is movable, an
Leiazei offset chamber formed in the guide member, a T-shaped guide member carried by the metal strip and movable along the bottom of the offset chamber, an L-shapedstrip having one arm connected to one Wall of the offset chamber and the other arm bearing against the inner side of the head of the "l1"- shaped guide member, and a spring member having connection with the L-shaped strip and bearing against the outer Wall of the offset chamber.
Q. A device of the class described including a screen member, a flexible metal strip connected to one edge of the screen member, a guide having an offset chamber formed therein. a l"shaped guide member connected to the flexible strip and having its head portion disposed between the guides, an L- shaped strip in the chamber having one arm connected to one wall of the chamber and the other arm bearing against the head of the T-shaped guide member, and a spring member secured to the L-shaped strip and bearing against the outer Wall of said chamber.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature.
