BASKET-CLOSURE. a
7 Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed January 31,1218. Serial No. 214,727.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, An'rrron J. THOMP- tional bushel or fruit type and it is an object of the invention to provide novel and improved means whereby the basket closure will be effectively position irrespective of the position 0 the basket or pressure which may be imposed thereon.
The invention. consists in the details of. construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our mproved basket closure whereby certain 1mportant advantages are attained and the de-.
vice rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac-.
- companying drawings, wherein:
- Figure 1 is a view in erspective of a basket having applied t ereto fastening means constructed 'n' accordance with an embodiment of our-invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevation illustrating one of our improved fastening members or clips ininitial position; and
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the fastening member or clip in locking engagement.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings B denotes a basket of ordinary construction and which includes the staves 1' Jon its side and rolled about. It
maintained in applied the spilling of the contents of the baskets i especially when the basket is inverted or laid also often occurs that the cleat 4 becomes detached when excessive pressure is imposed upon the basket when in stack which has a tendency to cause the lower basket to spread.
To maintain the closure member or cover C in applied position in the event the cleat a should become detached, we employ the members or clips M preferably two in number, althoughwe do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves in this respect.
Each of the members or clips M comprises a strand of. wire of predetermined length and having one end ortion returned as at 5 to afford an inward y facing hook member adapted to straddle the lower marginal portion of the outer rim 2 between adjacent staves 1. Y
Initially the opposite end portion of the strand 'of wire is bent on apredetermined curvature as indicated at 6' in a direction away from the returned portion 5, and affords a hook member adapted to be engaged over a finger when applying the .member. or clip. It is also to'be observed that the returned portion 5 and the angularly disposed portion 6 are arranged in the same plane as the intermediate portion of the strand.
After the hookmember 5 has been engaged with the rim 2 the strand is forced or bent inwardly over the rim 7 of the cover or closure member C i and between adjacent slats 8 comprised in said cover or closure membar. The hook 6 also serves, in view of its curved formation, to prevent damage to the fruit in close roximity to the clip or meme ber M after t e hook 6 has'b'een bent over the rim 7 which would not be the case if the portion 6 was straight.
I From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a basket closure constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with i which it may be assembled and'operated and it will be obvious that our-invention is sus- 1 and the rims 2 connecting the upper or :free'- ice tiblaof some change and modification ends of the staves 1. 3 denotes conventional vwithout, departin' from the principles and handles with which the cleat 4t coacts in' a spirit thereof an for this reason we do not well known manner for holding the closure wish to" beunderstood as limiting ourselves member or cover 0 in applied position. 'to the precise arrangement and-formation of It often occurs in the handling of a basket of this type that the cleat 4 becomes acciout our invention in practice except as heredentally'or otherwise detached resulting in inafter claimed.
of bendable material and having one end portion returned to form an inwardly fac- 1ng hook to straddle the lower marginal portion of the rim of the basket, the opposite end portion of the strand being extended, before applied and bent in a direction away from-the returned portion and arranged in the same plane as the returned portion longitudinally of the strand, said last named end portion being arranged on a 15 predetermined curvature to afford a finger engagin hook in applying the holding device an to protect the contents of the hasket when said last named portion is bent inwardly of the rim of the closure.
