Description

I. F. KENNEDY.-
BASKET FASTENERJ APPLICATION FILED rB.27, 1920.
Patented Aug. 31, 1920.
' INVENTOR' :ZE [(677)2 94 A TTOHAIE rs JAMES FRANCIS KENNEDY, OF CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
BASKET-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1920.
Application filed February 27, 1920. Serial No. 361,854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES FRANCIS KEN- NEDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Charlest0n,-in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Basket-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to fruit and vegetable baskets and more particularly to the fasteners thereof, my object being the provision of a simple and inexpensive means capable of ready use without the necessity of driving fasteners in the basket cover, as well as a fastener which may be speedily applied and will be effective and efficient in use.
In the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification and illustrates the invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a basket with its cover secured in place,
Fig. 2 is a partial top plan view,
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a side view ofthe parts shown in Fig. 3, and,
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the perforate body of the basket rim engaging cli Eeferring now to these figures my invention relates to means for securing the covers 10 of fruit baskets 11 in place and is more especially designed for use in connection with baskets 11 having surrounding bands 12 forming the rims thereof against which the lower surface of the surrounding edge of the cover rests in its secured position.
In connection with such baskets the invention proposes fastening means including a rim bandengaging clip generally indicated at 13, whose body is provided adjacent to one end with transversely spaced apertures 14 and a reduced extension 15, the latter of which-is} bent back upon the body of the clip in one direction to form a hook 16.
The opposite end of the body is bent back thereon in a relatively opposite direction to extend upwardly beneath the lower edges of the rim band 12 of the basket 11 and the body of the clip has adjacent to its bent end 17 just mentioned, an integral struck up spur 18 extending toward the bent engaging end 17 so as to be forced into the material of the rim band 12 to prevent shifting of the clip 13 circumferentially .of the basket.
Through the apertures 14 of the clip are extended the opposite ends 19 of a cover engaging wire, the extensions of which wire are passed upwardly through inwardly converging slots 20 formed in the cover 10 and extending from its outer edge, the wire extensions being drawn together between the inner ends of these slots upon the upper surface of the basket and twisted as at 21 in Fig. 2, to prevent the wires from pulling out, and being then bent outwardly and downwardly over the edge of the cover and twisted after engagement with the hook 16 as seen particularly in Fig. 4 so as to thus complete the fastening of the cover in place. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be noted that the fastening. means above described may be utilized at circumferentially spaced points around the basket and its cover and in more or less number as desired or as required by virtue of the contents, without danger of shifting or loosening even in case either the basket or its cover should become split or otherwise partially broken.
' It is obvious furthermore that the fastener as provided by my invention will be strong and durable in use, will avoid perforations and weakening of both the rim. band of the band, and it is also obvious that the wire may be associated with the clip prior to the application of the fastener without danger of relative displacement of these parts and that its practical use and application will be facilitated to this extent.
I claim 1. A cover fastener for baskets having rim bands and having a cover provided with inwardly converging slots extending through its edge, consisting of a clip having one bent end extending upwardly beneath the lower edge of the rim band and provided with a hook at its opposite end exteriorly of the rim band, extending wires anchored to the clip and projecting inwardly over the basket edge and upwardly through the inner ends of the said slots of the cover, the extremities of said wires projecting outwardly and downwardly over the edge of the cover between its slots and engaged with the hook of bands and having a cover provided with inwardly converging slots extending through its edge, consisting of a clip having one bent end extending upwardly beneath the lower edge of the rim band and provided with a hook at its opposite end exteriorly of the rim band, extending wires anchored to the clip and projecting inwardly over the basket edge and upwardly through the inner ends of the said slots of the cover, said wires having a lock twisted connection above the cover and between the inner ends of its slots and having their extremities bent outwardly and downwardly over the edge of the cover and twisted in engagement with the hook of th clip as described.
3. A cover fastener for baskets having rim bands and having a cover provided with inwardly converging slots extending through its edge, consisting of a clip having one bent end extending upwardly beneath the lower edge of the rim band and provided with a hook at its opposite end exteriorly of the rim band, extending wires anchored to the clip and projecting inwardly over the basket edge and upwardly through the inner ends of the said slots of the cover, the extremities of said wires projecting outwardly and downwardly over the edge of the cover between its slots and engaged with the hook circumferential displacement of the clip asdescribed.
4. The combination with a basket having a surrounding rim band, and a cover there-.
for having inwardly converging slots extending from its edge, of a clip secured in connection with the rim band, and flexible members connected at one end to the said clip, said members extending through the slots of the cover and engaged at their opposite ends with a portion of the clip to hold the cover in place.-
5. The combination with a basket having a rim band, and a cover therefor having inwardly converging slots extending from its edge, of a clip secured to the rim band and having a portion embracing the lower edge of the said band and an upper portion curved to form a hook, and flexible locking members anchored at one end in connection with the clip, said locking members extending through the slots of the cover and having their free ends engaging the hook of the clip, as described.
