UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BOY LE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO W. M. BOYLE MANUFACTURING COMPANY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
COATING DEVICE.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed November 6, 1917. Serial No. 209,556.
and useful Improvements in Coating Devices, of which the following is'aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in coating devices and it is the princlpal object of the invention. to provide a novel device for evenly and uniformly coating broom handles and the like with varnish or other suitable composition by merely immersing the same therein.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide the device with means for, removingany surplus amount of the coating composition from the article in order that a perfect finish will be g ven.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from" an inspection of the accompanying drawings, inconnection with the specific descri tion hereinafter contained, and wherein t, e preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings:
The figure is a vertical sectional View of the improved coating device.
Having more particular reference to the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts in the several views, 1 represents a sectional tubular container, the several sections of the same being connected by means of'a T-fitting 2 while the'bottom thereof is closed by a screw threaded cap 3 which cap is engaged with the complementally threaded end of the container 1.
Detachably engaged with the upper end of the tubular container 1 is a flexible scrap ing element 4, which scraping element is provided with a concentric openingand may be and preferably is formed of rubber or like material. In this connection, it is to be noted that the opening formed in the scraping member 4 may be varied in size in order that broom handles or like articles differing in diameters may be passed therethrough;
Engaged with the free branch of the T-fitting 2 is a short conduit 5, this conduit in turn being engaged by an elbow 6 which communicates with the discharge nozzle arranged in the lower portion of the llguid coating composition container 7. As Wlll be noted, the container 7 is arranged so that the top of the same lies substantially flush with the top of the container 1,
the purpose of which will be hereinafter obvious.
In operation, the container 7 is filled with a suitable liquid coating composition, such as varnish or the like whereupon a portion of the same will enter the tubular or elongated container 1.- The broom handles to be coated are now passed through the opening in the scraper element 4 downwardly into the container, thus, immersed in the coating composition arranged therein. Sub- .sequent to the emerging operation the handle is then withdrawn from the container,
the scraper element 4 obviously, serving as means for removing any surplus quantity of the liquid coating composition therefrom. and insuring a smooth and perfect finish. By replacing the scraping element 4. with another having a different size opening formed therein,- the device may be adapted for coating broom handles or like articles Varying in diameters or thicknesses.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of considerable modification and such modification as is within the scope of my claim, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1 A' coating device comprising a sectional container, one of said sections being shorter than the other,-a branch connection uniting the adjacent ends of the sections, the lower end of the container being closed, a scraping element engaged over the open upper end of the container, a rigid conduit engaged with the branch connection, and a reservoir connected to said conduit having its upper 'end arranged substantially level with the upper end of the container.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
WILLIAM M. BOYLE.
