SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters I-atent No. 741,432, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed January 7, 1903. Serial No. 138,170. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that LGEORGE T. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in oiling attachments for brooms; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily attached to a broom of ordinary construction and which will supply oil thereto in any desired quantities.
The invention consists in providing a tank adapted to be strapped or otherwise secured to the handle of the broom and to which is secured a distributing tube having outlets within the broom, each of said outlets being controlled by a valve whereby the quantity of oil discharged therethrough may be readily regulated.
Theinvention also consistsin the novel construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a broom having my improved attachment thereon. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. i is a detail view of the attachment, the central portion thereof beingin section to show the arrangement of valves therein. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. l. Fig. o' is a front elevation of a modified form of the attachment, and Fig. 7 is a detail view thereof.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, lis a tank of suitable construction having an inlet 2 at the upper end thereof and at outlet-pipe 3 at the lower end, said `pipe having a suitable valve 4, whereby the liow of the contents of receptacle l therefrom may be readily regulated. To the lower end of pipe 3 is secured a preferably curved distributing-pipe 5, upon which are arranged downwardly-extending tubes 6,having sharpened tips 7, screwed or otherwise secured to the lower 'ends of the tubes. An aperture 8 is formed within eachof the tubes 6, near the lower end thereof, and the upper end of each tube is adapted to be closed by the tapered end of a screw 9, mounted within the distributing-pipe 5.
In operation the receptacle l is filled with oil and then strapped or otherwise secured to the handle of a broom. The tubes 6 are inserted into the head of the broom from the end thereof nearest the handle. Valve t is then opened, and the screws 9 are adjusted so as to permit desired quantities of oil to escape through the tubes 6 and into thebroomhead. As the heads ot' the screws 9 are arranged above the head of the bi'oom, it will be seen that the flow of oil may be readily adjusted at any time without removing the at tachment from the broom.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I have shown a modified form of the attachment which is a much simpler construction than that heretofore described, but which is substantially similar in operation. In this form of device the outlettube 3 is connected to a curved tube lO,which extends laterally and downwardly from the outlet-tube and communicates with one end of a distributing-tube il, having a sharpened plug l2 at its free end. Apertures'lB are formed within the lower surface of this tube and are adapted to receive the tapered ends let of screws 15, the threaded portions of which engage threaded apertures i6, formed in the upper side of tube ll. To apply this modified attachment to the broom-head, it is necessary to insert the tube ll with its sharpened end l2 foremost into the side of the broomhead; but before so doing it is necessary to adjust the screws l5 so as to obtain the desired iiow of oil through the apertures 13.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butIdo not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes or alterations as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. A broom attachment comprisinga tank, a distributing-pipe connected thereto, tubes depending from said distributing-pipe and having sharpened ends,an outlet being formed within each of the tubes and said tubes serv- IOO ing to support the tank in position above a broomhead, and sorews' adjustably mounted within the distributing-pipe adapted to regulate the passage of liquid through the tubes.
2. A broom attachment eomprising a tank, a distributing-pipe connected thereto, and non-flexible tubes depending therefrom and having outlets, said tubes being adapted to engage the head of a broom and hold the tank rigidly against the handle of said broom.
3. The combination with a broom-head and a handle therefor; of a tank, a valved distributing-pipe connected therewith and ex-
