PETER J. WREISNER, 0F DASSEL, MINNESOTA.
SWING.
naoaeeq.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May at, 191?. Serial No. tracer.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, PETER J. Wnnrsnnn,
, a citizen, of the United States, and resident of Dassel, in the county of Meeker and State,
of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to swings and has more especial reference to an improved self propelled swing. I I
The invention has for its dominant object to provide a swing including a plurality ofseats which are rotated by means of novel manually operated clutch mechanism about a common center; the swing being easily rotated, thus, rendering the same especially desirable for use by children.
lit is a more specific object of theinvention to provide a novel form of clutch mechanism whereby 'the various seats of the swing can be collectively rotated by the oc cupants thereof..
Among other aims and other objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a swing of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which "the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and
a efliciency and operation high. til
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the swing will be brou ht out more in detail in the escription to ollow, which, for a clear understanding of the invention, should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed- ,for the, purpose of illustration a convenient and satisfactory embodiment of the invention.
In the drawin s:
Figure 1 is a si e elevation of my improved horizontal section Fig. 2 is a fragmentar taken therethrough; an V Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of one of. the clutch mechanism operating levers.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings 1 designates the-base of the swing includin a plurality of radially dispose legs having their adjacent ends connected by braces 2 and a drum 3 secured above the Patented Jur i, 1919..
similar fastenings generally indicated arranged through its middle is rotatably mounted upon the swing base, the said pivot pin, which is indicated by the numeral 6, being loosely received within the sleeve secured to the adjacent inner ends of the base legs 1. If desired, the pivot sleeve may be filled with oil or other suitable lubricant for an obvious purpose. Diagonally disposed bracing bars 7 are secured to the lower portion of the pivot pin 6 and to those portion of the cross arm 5 adjacent their outer extremities, thus, serving to prevent sagging or breaking of the cross arm 5 when abnormal stress or strain is-imparted thereto.
Bearing openings are formed transversely of the opposite ends of the cross arm 5 and have arranged adjacent thereto brackets 8, the intermediate portion of which are offset whereby operating levers 9 also carrying bearing brackets 10 having intermediate odset portions may be pivoted thereto by means of pivot pins 11 passing through thesaid transverse bearing openings. Ubviously, the off-set bearing brackets 10 as carried by the several operating levers 9 are passed about the opposite sides of the cross arm 5 and also receive the adjacent ends of the several bearin pins 11 therethrough, thus, materially racing the structure against undue lateral movement.
A flexible clutch band '12 is loosely arranged about the-periphery of the immovable drum 3 and has its opposite ends secured to a fulcrum lever 13' in spaced relation, theouter end of the said fu crum lever being pivotally engaged by a connecting rod 14:, the free end of which, is similarly engaged with the lower end of one of the operating levers 9, as at 15. A second connecting rod 16-is provided and has its respective ends pivotally engaged with the upper and lower ends of the several operat-. ing levers 9. Thus, when operating the whereby the children or other users of the swing may brace themselves during the pushing and pulling ofthe several operating levers 9.
In operation, when either of the levers 9 is rocked, the rod 14 will be moved to actuatelever 13 and draw the end portion of the clutch element into overlapping. relation and thus the flexible clutch element 12 will be in engagement with the periphery of the immovable drum 3 in a manner similar to the operation of a vehicle brake band, and as a consequence, the cross arm 5 pivotally supported upon the swing base will be caused to rotate. about the pivot thereof. Obviously, the velocity at which the swing is rotated can be controlled by the occupants thereof through the medium of the operating levers 9.
While I have herein illustrated and de-' scribed with a considerable degree of par ticularity the constructional details of the swing embodying m invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular form and arrangement of the several parts which may be modified within a wide range without departing from the essence of the invention, the construction shown and the description based there- 'on bein intended to be taken in an illustra tive ratflier than a limiting sense.
I claim:
' 1. In a swing, a base having a pivot thereneoapee on, a cross bar rotatably engaged interme- -mentioned lever and with one of the second mentioned levers.
2. In a swing, a base, a drum rigid with the base, a cross bar rotatably mounted above the drum, actuating levers pivotally connected with the cross bar,a clutch band its inner v positioned about the drum for frictional engagement with the peripheral face thereof, a lever having its inner end portion loosely connected with one end of the clutch band and having the second end portion of the clutch band loosely connected at a point intermediate its length, a rod connecting the outer end portion of the second lever with one of the actuating levers, and means for imparting movement from one of said actuatinglevers to the other.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature hereto.
PETER ,J. WREISNER.
