M d w UNITED STATES JOSEPH CHOJ'MIK, OF WHITING, INDIANA.
GYMNASTIC TOY.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed January 13, 1921. Serial No. 436,816.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr CHOJMIK, a citizen of Czecho-Slovakia, residing at lVhiting, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gymnastic Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to toys, having more particular reference to toys in which one or more figures or manikins are arranged to be moved on a support.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel form of toy of this type which may be constructed at small expense.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toy of this type in which a pair of figures are adapted for either unitary or individual movement or for unitary movement in different relative positions.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a face view, with certain parts in section of a toy constructed according to the invention, the inclosing casing being thrown open.
Fig. 2 is an end view with the casing closed.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view.
As here embodied my improved toy comprises a frame consisting of an elongated base-plate 10 from the opposite ends of which the end walls 11, 11' project upwardly. These parts, in addition to forming a frame on which the moving figures are mounted, also constitute portions of an 'inclosing casing, the end walls being preferably rounded at their upper ends as at 11 Extending between, and pivotally supported at opposite ends in, the upper portions of the end walls, is a horizontal shaft 12 one end of which may project beyond its supporting wall 11 and be provided with a handle enlargement 13 for purposes of rotation.
Loosely mounted on this shaft 12, toward the opposite wall 11' is a sleeve 15, and to the shaft and sleeve respectively are fixed the arms 16, 17' of acrobatic manikins 16 and 17 the arms being pivoted at the shoulders as at 18, while the legs of the manikins may also be pivotally attached.
- Fixed 011 the shaft 12 is a clutch collar 20 having on its face a series of projecting pins 21 which are adapted to engage in holes 22 n a clutch enlargement 23 formed on the inner end of sleeve 15. A coiled spring 24 normally urges these clutch elements apart.
Adjacent the outer end of the sleeve 15, the shaft 12 presents a screw-threaded portion 12 and on this portion is screwed a knurled adjusting nut 26 adapted to bear on the end of the sleeve 15 to force the two clutch elements into engagement. The sleeve 15 has preferably fixed to the end thereof adjacent nut 26 a radial flange 27 from which project outwardly a series of paddles 28 which may be struck by hand to rotate the sleeve.
To hold the shaft 12 against rotation when desired, as for instance when the toy is being transported from one place to another, an arm 30 is fixed on a stud 31 extending pivotally through the wall 11, this arm carrying on its free end a pin 32 adapted to swing into any one of a series of notches 33 in a wheel 34 fixed on the shaft 12. The arm 30 is located on the inner face of wall 11 and to enable it to be easily moved a sec- 0nd arm 35 is fixed on the outer end of the stud 31 and is provided with a knob or handle 36. A pair of pins 37 on the wall 11 limit the movement of the arm 35 in opposite directions.
To provide an inclosing casing for the toy when not in use a pair of face wall members 10 and 411 are hinged to opposite sides of the base-plate 10 and may extend up and over the rounded tops of the end walls 11, 11 to meet at the center thereof, where they may be secured by one or more hooks 42 on one wall element engaging over pins 43 on the other. f desired these wall elements may each be formed in two sections hinged together along the line where the end walls commence to curve, as indicated at 45.
It is believed the manner of use of my improved toy will be readily understood from the above description. As will be apparent, when nut 26 is screwed up to engage the clutch elements 20 and 23 the two figures 16 and 17 will move in unison when shaft 12 is rotated, and this rotation may be imparted either by twirling the handle 13 or striking the paddles 28, while the relative positions of the two figures may be varied by angular adjustment of the clutch faces as desired. When nut 26 is loosened the sleeve 15 is free on shaft 12 and either figure mag then be operated alone.
aving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A toy comprising a frame, a shaft journaled in said frame, a sleeve loose on said shaft, means whereby said sleeve may be fixed to said shaft to rotate therewith, and a pair of figures fixed respectively on the sleeve and shaft and manually operable rotation elements fixed respectively. on said shaft and sleeve. f
2. A toy'comprising a frame, a shaft journaled in said frame, a sleeve loose on said shaft, clutch elements formed respectively on said sleeve and shaft, a pair of figures mounted respectively on the sleeve and shaft, a spring normally urging said clutch elements apart, and a nut threaded on said shaft and adapted to hold said clutch elements in engagement.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
JOSEPH CHOJMIK.
