To all whom it may concern.- p p Be it known that I, TATSUJIRO IMAIZUMI,

a subject of the Emperor of Japan, and resident of the city of Seattle, county of K1ng,; and State of Washington, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Can teen-Filters, of which the following isxa specification.

My invention relates to filters desired for use in connection with a canteen, or other like container.

The object of my invention is to provide a filtering apparatus which may be applied to a canteen, or other like container, which, in addition to filtering the water as it is drunk, provides means for more conveniently using the canteen to drink from. Y

My invention comprises the novel parts and combinations of parts which will be described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown my invention, embodied in the form of construction which is now preferred by me. i

Figure 1 shows a canteen in section, having my filter therein, the cap of the canteen being in place.

Fig. 2 shows, in perspective and in longi tudinal section, the filter mechanism.

Fig. 3 shows my filtering and drink attachment removed from the container.

Canteens are usually provided with a comparatively large neck and mouth and, for this reason, are inconvenient to drink from. By my invention I provide a means which may be employed for filtering the water so as to remove from it dangerous germs and at the same time means whereby drinking from the canteen may be made more convenient. The device is also of such construction that it may be placed entirely within the canteen out of sight when not in use.

I provide a base member A, which, as herein shown, is in the form of a sleeve having a diaphragm extending across it, said sleeve being of a size to fit within the neck P of the canteen. This sleeve is preferably provided with a flange B at itsupper end which extends outward far enough to bear upon the outer end face of the canteen neck.

The cap R of the canteen fits over this flange B and when screwed down into place forces the flange down upon the end face of Sp eeification of Letters Patent.

It is evident that this base member may be madeof other form. The result desired is a base member which will enter the canteen neck and be held therein by the canteencap. f

Within and supported from this base, so thatit may have endwise reciprocation, is a tube F which forms a mouth piece and through which water is drawn. As herein shown, the base piece A has a diaphragm E located a short distance inward from its outerend which has a hole of such a size to permit free passage of the mouth piece tube F. The outer end of this mouth piece tube is provided with a flange S which will prevent its being pushed through the diaphragm E from the outside.

I The filter is secured to the inner end of the tube F and, as herein shown, consists of acup-like member K and a cap Gr, these being shown as screw-threaded together. To the opposite or lower side of the filter is a nipple N to which is secured a draft tube 0, the latter being of flexible rubber. The cap G of the filter has its upper surface preferably extending across the lower end of the tube F and provided with a few small holes I. The chamber formed by the cup K is filled with a small amount of cotton or any desired and suitable filtering material.

The base member A and the filter member are connected by a spring J which is so formed that its tendency is to raise the filter relative to the cap, that is, so as to project the outer end of the mouth piece tube F, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In this position it may be taken in the mouth and water readily drawn.

Fitting of the tube within the hole in the diaphragm E is sufficiently loose to permit air to enter the canteen to replace the water drawn out. By this device it is possible to drink from the canteen with greater ease and more comfort than from such a large opening as the neck P.

What I claim as my invention is:
