To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK ZAGELMEYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented cer` tain new and useful Improvements in Camping Outfits, ofv which the following Vis a speciiication. Y l.

The invention relates to a camping outt.

The object of the present'invention is to provide a simple, practical y and efficient camping outfit adapted to be readily adapted to any automob'le and capable of being compactly folded so as not to present .a clumsy appearance and adapted to be readily` arranged for use. .l

A further object of the invention is` to` provideV a camping tent, upper and lower foldable berths, a table and chairsand tolenable the automobile to` support one end of the tent and to permit the berths and the table to be readily op-` erated to` permit either tobe arranged for use.A A

With these and other objects in view the invention consists .in the novel construction and. arrangment of parts hereinafter fully described and illustrated in the accompany-p ing drawings and pointed out in the claimsv hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, preparation and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from any of the advantages In the drawings Figure l is an isometric view of a portion of the camping outfit, the foldable berths being shown in an open position.

In the accompanying drawings in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the camping outfit comprises in its construction a casing 2 havingtapered side walls and designed to be attached to the body l of an automobile by upper and lower members-3 and 4, the lower member 4f being preferably connected tothe springs or otherl suitable portion of the vehicle at the lower portion thereof and the top member 3 being' suitably secured at the upper portion of the rear end of the body 1. The upper and lower arms or members 3V and 4 are horizontally arranged and they may be attachedto the case 2 in any desired manner.l

The central portion of the tent is supported at the top by a ridge pole 9 composed of two bars or members p-ivotally connecte-d at one end at 9qd tol enable them to be folded as illustrated'in Fig. 9 of the drawings and also to be arranged at an angle of inclination as shown in' Fig. 8 for supporting the top of the tent. The ridge pole is provided with a pin or projection 10 for engaging the canvasor other material of the top of the tent and the said bars or sections 9 ofthe ridge pole are tapered atY their outer or free ends and are provided tliereat with plates or pieces 11 'having openings 12' 13. The openings 12 are adapted to receive the pointedapper' ends theadjacens poles 8 to enable the said plates or members to t over the said upper ends of the poles 8 and connect the ridge pole or support with the same and the other opening 13 receive a flexible connection 18 consisting of a cable or the like and adapted to connect the lower ends of the bars or sections 9 of the ridge pole and form a tie-member to limit the outward movement of the same. Thedetachable connection of the bars or members of the ridge pole with the side poles 8 and the top of the tent will'enable the ridge pole or support to be relatively placed in operative position and removed therefrom and folded when pitching and folding the tent.

The tent is also provided at opposite sides with windows 14C designed to be covered with suitable material and adapted to permit a free circulation of air through the tent so that perfect ventilation of the same` will be a'iorded. The iap or out-let of the tent is located at therear thereof and bracing or guy ropes 15 are connected with and extend outwardly from therear end of the tent as clearly shown in Fig. G of the drawings. The ropes 15 are connected with thetop of the tent adjacent to the rear poles 8 -to a -flap 1.7 vand theyl are secured at ytheir lower ends to suitable ground stakes 16 in the usual manner. The tent is provided with a floor 'l'a of canvas or other material of which the tent is constructed so that the tent will be proof against insects and flies which ordinarily gain access to the common form of tents.

rlhe camping outfit is equipped with upper andlower berths 19 and 19a constructed substantially the same and composed of sides 21 and suitable transverse connecting bars or members. The sides which taper from the centerto the ends are split centrally to for-m two sections and are hinged together at their upper edges by suitable hinges 20a and 2Ob and when they are extended and arranged forv use as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, their upper edges are horizontal and are arranged in alinement while their lower edges are oppositely inclined. The side bars or members of the lower berth are connected by suitable hinges 20 to the case 2 at the lower ends or opposite sides thereof and the inner ends of the side bars or members of the upper berth are connected with the case 2 at the inner faces of the side walls thereof and adjacent to the top of the same by suit-able hinges 34; This construction will permit the upper berth to fold downwardly and inwardly into the case 2 and the lower berth to fold inwardly and upwardly contiguous to the upper berth, the tent being folded and received between the upper and,

lower berths as illustrated in Fig.Y 4 ofthe drawings. The berths are equipped with springs 25 suitably attached to the side mein- 2 bers and the transverse connecting members` which are located at the ends of the berths. The oppositely tapered side bars orV members of the berths provide a strong construction and the upper berth is supported by foldable inclined braces 28 located at opposite sides of the berths and pivotally connected at their lower ends at 27 to the inner faces of the side bars or members of the lower berth and havingtheir upper ends detachably fitted in recesses or pockets 23b of the transverse connecting bar 23a ofthe upperl berth. The lower ends of the braces 28 whiche-Xtend upwardly :andinwardly arecarried by the outer sections of the side bars or members of the lower berth and are foldable-` between the same-when nottinv use. The lower berth is also equipped with supporting legs 29 pivf oted at their upper ends at 26 to the-side barsor members of the :lower berth at the outer ends of the inner sectionsof the said side bars or members and connected, by transverse bars 31. chairs,l being retained r`in be readily swung downward to a horizontal position from the lower berth when the latter is folded as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and when it is desired to lower the berths the table is swung upward to its folded position and is secured therein prior to lowering the berths and it does not interfere with the operation of the latter.

It will therefore be seen that the camping outfit which is very compact and light in weight can be easily and quicklyA assembled, and can be readily attached to an automobile and that the two berths compactly fold against the case or support and open inwardly into the tent.

What I claim is:

1. A camping outt including a case designed to be mounted on an automobile or other vehicle and upper and lower berths hinged to the case, the upper berth beingV foldable inwardly and downwardly and the lower berth being foldable inwardly and upwardly.

2. A camping outfit including a case designed to be mounted on an automobile or other vehicle and upper and lower berths having side bars or members hinged at the inner ends to the case and composed of inner and outer sections hinged together at their upper edges and the upper berth being arranged to fold inwardly and downwardly and the lower berth inwardly and upwardly into overlapping relation.

3. A camping outfit including a case designed to be mounted on an automobile or other vehicle and upper and lower berths having side bars or members hinged at the inner ends to the case land composed of inner and outer sections hinged together at their upper edges and the upper berth being arranged to fold inwardly and downwardly and the lower berth inwardly and upwardly into overlapping relation, and foldable braces pivotally connected with the outer section of the lower berth and extending upwardly to and arranged to support the inner section of the upper berth.

l. A camping outfit including a case designed to be mounted on an automobile or other vehicle and upper and lower berths having side bars or members hinged at the inner ends to the case and composed of inner and outer' sections hinged together at their upper edges and the upper berth being arranged to fold inwardly and downwardly and the lower berth inwardly and upwardly into overlapping relation, foldable legs supporting the lower berth and foldable braces Copies of this patent may he obtained for nve cents each, by addressing the extending from the lower berth to the upper berth and carried by one of the said berths.

5. The combination of a folding berth composed of inner and outer sections, hinged together, and a transversely disposed retaining device extending across the berth and connected with the same at the hinged ends of the sections and adapted to hold the bed clothing and springs and prevent the same from bulging at the bend formed by the folding of the berth.

6. The combination of a folding berth composed of inner and outer sections, hinged together and ay transversely disposed spring retaining device consisting of a yoke eX- tending across the berth at the hinged ends of the sections thereof and connected with the said ends and arranged to hold the bed clothing in the bend formed by the folding of the said sections, whereby the bed clothing is prevented from bulging at the hinged ends of the sections and interfering with the foldin of the berth.

7 T e combination of a folding berth composed of inner and outer sections hinged together, a transversely disposed springv retaining device consisting of a yoke eXtending across the berth and provided at opposite sides with resilient arms detachably engaging the said sections, and adapted to spring 1n and out of engagement with the same, said yoke being arranged to hold the bed clothes and prevent the same from bulging at the bend formed by folding the sections of the berth.

8. A camping outfit including a case having tapered side walls and' upper and lower berths hinged to the case at the upper and lower portions thereof and provided with oppositely tapered side bars or members divided intermediate of their ends and hinged together to permit the berths to fold with relation to the case.

9. A camping outiit including'a sup-port designed to be mounted on an automobile or other vehicle, upper and lower berths hinged to the support one above the other, the upper berth being foldable downwardly and the lower berth being foldable upwardly.

10. A camping outfit including a support designed to be mounted on an automobile or other vehicle, upper and lower berths hinged to the support one above the other, said berths being composed of hinged ysections and foldable inwardly one over the other.
