To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALTON E. Gosso, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Outdoor Beds, of which the following is a description.

My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as beds, and relates particularly to an improved bed, a support therefor, and protection against the weather, etc. More particularly the invention relates to a device of the kind described that may be folded in compact form and readily assembled or disassembled when required. The invention has amongits objects the production of a simple, durable, eflicient, compact, attractive and satisfactory device of the kind described for use wherever found applicable. Other objects and advantages will appear to those familiar with the art from the disclosures herein given.

To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described,

and more claims.

Referring to the drawings, it may be mentioned that I have shown two constructions, the constructions being substantially identical, except one is arranged to carry one bed and the other form to carry two beds, the two-bed construction being slightly larger. The device consists primarily of a suitable foldable bed and a suitable foldable supporting frame therefor, together with means for covering the bed and support, so as to ofi'er protection against the sun and weather, as well as insects, flies, and the like. Referring first to Figs. 1 to 8, I provide a, frame part, consisting of the two V-shaped frames, each made up of the legs 1 and connecting piece 2. These three pieces are preferably formed of one piece, and may be reinforced by rivets 5 at the corners. As illustrated in Fig. 3, the frame in the preferred construction is of angle iron of suitable proportions. Pivotally secured to the legs 1 by rivets or bolts 4, or the equivalent, are the links 3, 3. The supporting frame consists of the two similar parts, as described, with the pairs of links 33 connected, so that when the frame is set up it is substantially V-shaped, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. I have shown the links 33 secured to a triangular piece 6, one arranged at each side of the frame, the links being secured thereto by rivets or bolts 7, so adjusted that the frame parts 8 may be folded, as indicated in Fig. 6. Connecting the, plates 6 is a bar or ridge pole. S. This is also of angle iron, slightly closed as at 10, so as to engage in the slot 9 in each of the plates 6. The same is also extended as at 11 at each side of the frame on the outside, and turned down as at 12, being preferably connected by brace members 13 to the side links, as shown.

The bed part consists of the side and end parts 1 1 and l5,the same being substantially U-shaped, connected with a similarly formed U-shaped part by bolts or rivets 1G, or the equivalent. The bed frame is also preferably of angle iron. The frame carries a canvas sheet or mattress 17, secured to the frame by lacings 18, or the equivalent for the purpose. The sheet 17 may be laced to the bed frame in any suitable manner, this being more or less immaterial. Arranged at each corner of the bed frame is an eye bolt or hook 19, arranged to engage a spring 20, the springs being carried from the supporting frame previously described.

adjusted to suit. Arranged on each side of the bed supporting frame is a pin 24. I have shown this pin extended through a link or U-bolt 25, or the equivalent (see Fig. 3). The purpose of the pin is to prevent spreading of the supporting legs when a weight is carried by the bed. If desired, a cable 26, a rod, or the equivalent, may be secured to the end pieces 2 for the same purpose.

As shown in Figs. 2 and 5, I cover the supporting frame with a canvas or equivalent covering 27, making to all. purposes a roomy, comfortable tent. The tent shown is provided with flies or flaps 2S, and the flaps may be secured together to entirely close the ends by fasteners 29, which may be in the form of buttons, snap fasteners, buckles, or any equivalent. The corners of the tent are socured by pins 30. It will be noted by referring particularly to Figs. 2 and 5, that ample room is provided on either side of bed for dressing or undressing, with plenty of head room below the ridge pole 8. The part 8 also being of angle iron, tends to prevent wear on the top of the tent. The extending parts 11 and the inclined ends of the tent give a very attractive appearance to the device. By employing angle iron and connecting it as shown, so that the ends overlap, the supporting frame is prevented from COllflPSillg when the bed is in place and carrying a person. This is also particularly true where plate 6 is employed. To fold the bed the same is unhooked from the springs 20 and the center raised so that the legs 14L are folded against each other. To fold the frame the pins 24: are drawn and the legs 1 and connecting parts folded against the parts 3, these then folded as indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 6, the braces 13 being first unhooked. The ridge pole 8 is also removed, this being easily done owing to the slot 9 in each plate 6. If desired, however, the ridge pole may be passed through holes of suflicient size in plates 6 to allow one part to slide relative to the other.

The construction shown in Figs. 9 and 10 is substantially similar except that the frame is made larger and carries two beds instead In this case the frame consists of the sides 31, 33, pivotally connected at 31, and connected by the connecting pieces 32. The connecting piece 32 is in two parts pivotally connected at 10 at the center so that it may be folded and pivotally connected at 35 to the side pieces 31. Plates 36 are similar to plates 6, previously described, and ridge pole 38 is also similar to ridge pole 8. As will be noted in this construction, the beds are arranged parallel with the ridge pole, and are supported by the springs 20. The inner springs 20 are carried by the rods 43. In this case I also provide a plurality of series of holes 41-1 and 4-2, so as to afford different adjustments. This bed is also covered with a canvas protection, or the like, of sufficient size to cover the bed and allow some room at either end.

With "either style the complete outfit may be folded in very small space, so that it may be easily carried on an automobile, for 6X- ample, occupying but small space. The devices are economical to manufacture, and they are most efficient in use. They are' suited for camping out, or for home use or on the lawn. They are particularly suitable in open air colonies, for example, for tuberculosis patients, for construction gangs working on the roads, or the like. They are also convenient for military uses. When the bed is not in use the same may be folded up and placed to one side, or in the case of the construction shown in Fig. 9, the outer edges of the bed frames, that is the sides at the center of the tent, may be folded against the parts 33 and secured thereto, so that practically the entire interior of the tent is unobstructed.

Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made inthe same without departing from the spirit of my invention;

hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a frame consisting of two U shaped frame parts arranged together with the free ends of the sides of one part adjacent the ends of the other, the sides of said parts each consisting of a plurality of parts pivotally secured together and a pair of plates, one plate pivotally secured to the upper end of one of the sides of one of the U-shaped parts and to the adjacent end of one side of the other U-shaped part, and the other plate similarly pivotally secured to the ends of the other adjacent sides of said frame parts, said plates arranged to engage with the frame parts and limit the movement thereof.

2. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a frame consisting of two U- shaped frame parts arranged together with the free ends of the sides of one part adjacent the ends of the other, the sides of said parts each consisting of a plurality of parts pivotally secured together, and the relative pivotal movement of the parts being limited, and a pair of plates, oneplate pivotally secured to the upper end of one of the sides of one of the U-shaped parts, and to the adjacent end of one side of the other U- shaped part, and the other plate similarly pivotally secured to the ends of the other adj acent sides of said frame parts, said plates arranged to engage with the frame parts and limit the movement thereof, a bed frame consisting of a pair of U-shaped parts pivotally secured together at the ends of the sides of the parts, said adjacent side parts arranged to engage with each other to limit the pivotal movement thereof, and means for suspending said bed part from the sides of one U-shaped frame between its base and the free ends of the side parts thereof.

3. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a pair of bed frames, each frame consisting of two U-shaped parts of angle iron arranged with the sides of one part at their ends overlapping the sides of the other at their ends, and pivotally secured together, a supporting frame for said beds consisting of two U-shaped frames of angle iron, the sides of said frames being constructed of several parts arranged to overlap and pivotally secured together, means for securing the upper ends of the sides of one frame part to the ends of the sides of the other, consisting of a pair of plates, each plate independently pivotally secured to the upper ends of each of the frame parts at each side and arranged to engage at its ends with the flanges on the side parts, a ridge pole detachably secured to and connecting said plates from one side of the frame to the other, and means for securing said bed frames to said supporting frame, one bed frame on one side between the ridge pole and base and the other on the other side between the ridge pole and base.

In a device of the kind described and in combination, a pair of bed frames, each frame consisting of two U-shaped parts of angle iron arranged with the sides of one part at their ends overlapping the sides of the other at their ends, and pivotally secured together, a supporting frame for said beds consisting of two Ushaped frames of angle iron, the sides of said frames being arranged to overlap and consisting of a plurality of parts pivotally secured together, means for securing the upper ends of the sides of one frame part to the ends of the sides of the other, consisting of a pair of plates, each plate independently pivotally secured to the upper ends of each of the frame parts at each side and arranged to engage with the iianges on. the side parts, a ridge pole detachably secured to and connecting the plates and extending from one side of the frame to the other, and means for securing said bed frames to said supporting frame, one bed frame on one side between the ridge pole and base and the other on the other side between the ridge pole and base, comprising rods carried by the sides of the frame parts between the base and ridge pole, and depending therefrom, springs carried by said rods, the lower ends of said springs attached to the bed frames.

5. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a bed frame and a supporting frame therefor, said supporting frame constructed of angle iron and consisting of two U-shaped parts, arranged with the upper ends of the sides adjacent, a plate for each side of said supporting frame, each pivotally and independently secured to the adjacent side parts of the frame, the sides of said supporting frames each comprising a plurality of parts pivotally secured together intermediate the upper ends and the base of the U, and the base foldable intermediate its ends, and a ridge pole detachably carried by said plates.

6. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a bed frame and a supporting frame therefor, said supporting frame constructed of angle iron and consisting of two U-shaped parts arranged with the upper ends of the sides adjacent, a plate for each side of said supporting frame, each pivotally and independently secured to the adj acent side parts of the frame, the sides of said supporting frames each comprising a plurality of parts pivotally secured together intermediate the free ends and the base of the U, and the base foldable intermediate its ends,.said plates each notched on the top edge, and a ridge pole detachably carried by said plates at said notches therein, and means for adjustably and detachably securing the bed frame to the supporting frame, comprising yieldable connecting means secured to the sides of the frame parts and between the base and ridge pole, and to the bed frame.

7. In a device of the kind described and in combination, a foldable bed frame and a foldable supporting frame therefor having means for supporting said bed frame, said supporting frame consisting of two foldable U-shaped parts arranged with the upper ends of the sides adjacent, a plate for each side of said supporting frame, each plate pivotally secured to the adjacent side parts of the frames at their upper ends, said plates and parts constructed to engage when the supporting frame is in operative position and limit the pivotal movement of the parts, and a detachable ridge pole of a length to extend between. and be carried by said plates.
