H. LAQUAA GRAIN BINDER ATTACHMENT. APPLICATIGN FILED FEB.17| |919y l1. ,301?? Jl. .Patented Apr. 22, 1919.

GRAIN-BINDER ATTACHMENT.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, wald..
Application filed February 17, 1919. Serial No. 277,567.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN LAQUA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zumbro Falls, in the county of Wab asha and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain- Binder Attachments, of which the following is a specication.
The present invention comprehends generally improvements in that class of inven tions known as harvesters and more particularly relates to a grain binder attachment.
It is the primary aim and object of this invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character designed to be attached to a grain binder for holding the grain in position with respect to the knotting and binding mechanism.
More particularly the present invention contemplates the provision of a device of the above mentioned character wherein there is employed a pair of pivotally and resiliently mounted grain holding arms preferably associated with the spring rail of a binder and positioned on opposite sides of the binding and knotting mechanism so as to temporarily hold the grain back in proper relation to the said mechanism until the completed bundles are ready to be discharged from the machine.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above mentioned character with a view to compactness and wherein the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the eliiciency high.
Other objects, as well `as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims, forming a part of this specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the grain holding devices attached to the spring rail and positioned on opposite sides of the linding and knotting mechanism of the bin- Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevational detail of one of the grain holding devices, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevational detail of the same.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings there is illustrated a portion of a selfebinder and includes the usual spring rail A suitably supported over the deck B of the binder while operatively associated with the spring rail and positioned on opposite sides of the binding and knotting mechanism C are the improved grain holders indicated generally by the letter D designed for temporarily holding the grain back in proper relation to the binding and knotting mechanism until the completed bundles are ready to be discharged from the machine.
ln the present instance each grain holding device may be said to consist of an attaching arm l having an attaching portion 2 secured to the spring rail as by suitable fasteners 3 provided at its inner terminal with a depending flange d which in addition to bracing the attaching portion 2 acts to accomplish another purpose as will hereinafter appear. The main portion of the attaching bracket preferably is extended upwardly at its inclination and of course rearwardly from the spring rail. Swingably connected to the outer end of the bracket 1 is one of the sectional holding arms generally designated by the numeral 5. ln reducing this feature of the invention to practice, the inner section may be said to consist of spaced bars 6 mounted upon opposite sides and at the inner end of the outer section in the form of an elongated bar 7 preferably by means of a nut and bolt arrangement 8. A similar fastening means 9 serves to pivotally conneet the bars 6 on opposite sides of the outer portion of the attaching bracket l. The nut and bolt `arrangement 9 serves merely as pivotal means for the arm 5 but the nut and bolt arrangement 8 acts also as a means for clamping the outer section or deck engaging bar 7 between the inner section or the relatively short spaced bar 6 and in various positions of angular adjustment.
ln order to yieldin gly hold the deck engaging bar 7 in engagement with the deck B of the binder, resilient means such as a coiled contractile spring Il0 is employed, the outer end being connected to an eye-bolt l1 carried by the bar 7 while the inner end terminates in a ring or loop l2 which is engaged with the depending liange a of the attaching bracket.
In use, it is apparent from the brief d escription that the pivotally mounted grain holding or retarding arm 5 being held in yielding engagement With the deck B of the binder by the springs 10 will act to temporarily hold or retard thev grain in proper relation to the binding and knotting mecha nism C iuitil the completed bundles are ready to 'be discharged from the machine, the Weight of the bundles of course overcoming the tension of the spring l so that the armr 5 Will raise upwardly allowing the bundles to pass down the deck or platform B as is apparent. At times it is desirable to arrange the arm in an inactive position and in such event it is only necessary to swing the same upwardly beyond the center whereupon the springs will become inactive and the arms will rest on the Windshield E of the binder as is apparent.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further detailed description of the operation of the invention is entirely unnecessary, likewise, it is believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Still further embodiments of the invention than those herein especially defined may be resorted to as conditions or preference may dictate, as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.
Havingthus fully described the invention what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. A grain holding attachment for selfbinders including a spring rail enga-ging and supporting bracket, a sectional arm com- `posed of an inner section and an outer section, means for pivotally connecting the inner end of the inner section to the bracket, means for clamping the outersections in various positions of angular adjustment with respect to the inner section, and resilient means between the outer section of the arm and the ,bracket for yieldingly holding the outer section of the arm against the deck of the binder.
2. A grain holding attachment for binders including a spring rail engaging bracket having an attachingV portion and a supporting portion and also formed at its attaching portion With a depending flange, a sectional grain holding arm including an inner section consisting of spaced bars and an outer section in the formV of an elongated bar, means for releasably clamping the inner end of the bar between the outer portions oi' the inner spaced bars so that the outer bar will lie in various positions of angular adjustment relative to the inner bars, means for pivotally connecting the inner bars to the supporting portions of the bracket and a coiled contractile spring having its respective ends connected to the outer bar and to the flange on the bracket for yieldingly holding the outer end of the outer bar in engagement With the deck of the binder.
ln testimony whereof l ax my signature hereto.
HERMAN LAQUA.
