JOHN WILLIAM PETERSEN, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
POLE-DROP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920.
Application filed November 25, 1919. Serial No. 340,441.
designed for supporting the pole of a carriage in horizontal position, without any strain on the carriage when the pole is not in use, the said prop being pivoted to the pole to swing into or out of operative position.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a pole having the improved prop in operative position,
Fig. 2 is a front view,
Fig. 3 is a side view of the neck yoke check,
gig. 4 is a side View of one end of the y Fig. 5 is a plan View of the bolt for connecting the yoke to the pole.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the outer end of the pole.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the pole 1 has connected therewith the yoke 2, the said yoke being provided at its center with a depending substantially U- shaped member 3, whose arms extend on op= posite sides of the pole, and are pivotally connected thereto by the bolt 4 shown in Fig. 5. This bolt has a fixed head 5 at one nd, nd a detachable head 6 at he other end, the said head being held in place on the bolt by a pin 7 which passes through registering openings in the head and in the bolt.
The prop is composed of two strips or bars 8 of suitable length, which are pivoted on the bolt 4, which pivotally connects the arms of the yoke 3 to the bolt, in such manner thatthe said bars or strips 8 may occupy the full line position of Fig. 1, or may be swung into the dotted line position of the said figure. WVhenthey are in the full line position, it will be evident that the free end of the pole will be supported out of contact with the ground, while when the prop is in the dotted line position of Fig- 1 it will be out of the way where it will not interfere with the use of the carriage.
A check 9 is connected with the pole for engagement by the yoke to limit rearward swinging movement thereof. This check has a depending pin 10 which passes through an opening in the pole and is engaged by a nut l1 below'the pole.
I claim In combination with the pole of the carriage, of a yoke having intermediate its ends a depending substantially U-shaped member consisting of a body rigid with the yoke and arms engaging opposite sides of the pole and pivotally connected thereto, a prop mounted on the pivotal connection of the yoke arms at each side of the pole,
and a stop for the yoke secured to the pole in rear of the yoke, said stop being mounted to engage the yoke when it swings rearwardly to prevent the engagement of the yoke with the pole.
JOHN WILLIAM PETERSEN.
